Curation

21st Century Education

Connectivity

Connecting to favourite work and entertainment

sites with ease to encourage control and

independence in work and leisure activities

Community

Joining with like minded people,

doing things you like together

Collaboration

The sharing of data and ideas,

both in real time and asynchronously

CreativityCreating new things: Inspiring writing and

the manipulation of data, maps and images

to present information and ideas in new ways

Curation

Having a place to confirm, collect, store, categorise

and collate data for easy retrieval at a later date

The 5Cs

Provide learners with

• the CONNECTIVITY

• to develop a COMMUNITY of learners

• so they can COLLABORATE

• to CREATE new things and ideas and

• a place where the resources and products can be CURATED

for retrieval at a later date.

Connectivity

Connectivism: based on the work of George Siemens

Community

Joining with like minded people,

Community

CommunityIn Moodle we use:

• Forums

• Discussion groups

• Chat

Adobe Connect was used for Thursday Night Live - formal

get every Thursday 7:00 to 8:30pm local time

www.meeting.is was used for a "hangout" on Tuesdays and

Wednesdays 12:00 to 2:00pm local time (currently no iPad)

Collaboration

The sharing of data and ideas,

both in real time and asynchronously

Collaboration

Chambers, D (2013) Deep Learning and Real Connections: Designing an

online subject that requires higher order thinking. Proceedings

EDULEARN 13 Barcelona, Spain

The subject being online and the asynchronicity of interactions is a real

advantage for students who are engaging with others in a scholarly way ... as it

gives students the time to present themselves in a scholarly way (page 3847)

CollaborationThrough shared activities in Moodle we use:

• Wiki

• Database

• Chat

• Forum

The main object is to encourage higher level thinking of Bloom's Taxonomy

• Understanding,

• Applying,

• Analysing,

• Evaluating

CreativityPalloff, R and Pratt,K (2010) Collaborating Online: Learning together

in Community John Wiley and Sons

... collaboration forms the foundation of learning communities online - it

brings students together to support the learning of each member of the

group while promoting creativity and critical thinking (page xi)

Curation

Having a place to confirm, collect, store, categorise

and collate data for easy retrieval at a later date

CurationNightingale, V (2011) Handbook of Media

Audiences. John Wiley and Sons

While we often use the concept of appraisal in

an economic sense to talk about the relative

value of different objects, the same term gets

used to discuss curation. For instance,

appraisals performed in archives or museums

may be just as concerned with the historical,

cultural, or symbolic value of an artefact, and

often whether the artefact is worth preserving for

future generations, as it is with the item's

monetary value (page 119)

CurationWe don't do this very well

Currently I use an external website (no student access to FLO after the close of topic):
