Our goal is have 100% of students engaged in reading, writing and researching for 75% of our language arts block.

ResearchingStudents work on social studies based projects, when they are reading books and/or articles to help them gather information.

Read to SelfThe more you practice reading, the better you become at it!

Guided Reading groupsStudents are working in groups with the teacher to help strengthen reading skills.

Partner and Repeated ReadingWe are working on making our reading sound fluent.

Ways to help your child become more engaged in their reading

Make sure they have “just-right” booksGive them time to readLook for books that hold your child’s interestModel for your child how you choose books to readGive them choice about what they are reading

Choosing “Just Right” books

Have your child open to the middle of a book and read aloud a small part; do they miss less than 5 words AND can they retell what they read easily Lexile.com or scholastic book wizard websites Is your child interest in that subject

Working on Fluency-Making the reading sound like the author wrote it

Help your child at an appropriate pace. We don’t want them to read to slow or too fast.Have your child read and reread a textRead a text using different expressions in your voice…how would you use your voice to show this character is mad, excited, etc.Remind your child to pay attention to punctuationRead to your child or have them listen to reading on the computer or books on CDRead to/with your childReading lyrics to songs

Word strategies

Eagle Eye - Look at the pictures! Look at the picture for clues

Lips the Fish - Get your lips ready! Say the first few sounds of the new word Read to the end of sentence and say it again

Stretchy Snake - Stretch it out! Stretch the word out slowly Put the sounds together

Chunky Monkey - Chunk the Word! Look for a chunk that you know (-at, -an) Look for a word part (-ing, -er)

Skippy Frog - Skip It, Skip It! Skip the word Read to the end of the sentence Hop back and READ IT, READ IT!

Tryin’ Lion - Try it again! Try to reread the sentence Try a word that makes sense

Helpful Kangaroo - Ask for help! Ask for help (after you have tried all of the other strategies

ComprehensionDo they understand what they are reading

Talk to your child about what they are readingAsk them questions, if you are unsure of an answer they give you then have them show in the text where they information in the textUse the reading log questions to help guide your discussionsWhen reading chapter books, have them stop after each chapter and tell you what is happening.
