JOURNEY OF SELF DISCOVERY (The Star-13 August 2020)
In this second of a four-part Young Leaders Series, Yayasan Khazanah scholars share how
they learn where their strength lies
BEING selected as a Yayasan Khazanah (YK) scholar has given Ang Kian Guan a chance to
pursue his education and realise his dream of studying at University of California, US,
majoring in electrical engineering and computer science. Ang Kian Guan
With a reputation for stringent assessment and interview stages, YK
scholarship is among the most prestigious in the country.
For the 20-year-old Kedahan who is the youngest among three siblings, it
was an apprehensive yet rewarding experience in his journey to
becoming a YK scholar.
“If it weren’t for YK, I wouldn’t have the financial means or opportunity to study at one of the
global leading universities.
“I prepared myself two months ahead. Every assessment and online test feels like a huge
stake for me as I wanted to excel in each one while keeping true to my own self for the
personality test.
“As I went along, I learned a lot about myself, saw myself grow and enjoyed the beauty of the
process even before being a YK scholar, ” said Ang.
Kuala Lumpur-based Abbernaa Dhevi Kukananthan shared Ang’s gratitude at being selected
for the YK scholarship.
“My dream undergraduate degree course was politics and international relations. YK was the
only scholarship that supported what I wanted with a degree that
encompasses deep passions of mine.
Abbernaa Dhevi Kukananthan

“The constant support from YK has been such a calming factor that has given me a new sense
of courage to push on in the pursuit of my dreams, ” said the 21-year-old who will be studying
human, social and political sciences at the University of Cambridge, UK.
Although the application process was a tough one, she found it rewarding as it enabled her to
realise her different strengths and weaknesses.
“There was no way you could hide your weaknesses, so you’re here to learn how to show the
best side of yourself with these weaknesses. The whole process was challenging yet a holistic
and comprehensive one, ” she said.
Abbernaa Dhevi believes that education is the right of every child and she hopes to share the
privilege and blessings she has received by becoming part of the movement once she finishes
her studies.
For Muhammad Hanif Adzmir, being a part of the Yayasan Khazanah family has made an
impact on his life since he started at Kolej Yayasan UEM 18 months ago.“YK’s robust
network and career preparation initiatives are what initially attracted me to its scholarship
programme, with its goal to produce future leaders evident through its workshops and
community service programmes which encourage character building and leadership
development.
Muhammad Hanif Adzmir
“I have always been inspired to make a change for my country, especially for my home state
Sabah. I believe that with YK’s resource and our alignment in vision, they will help me do
exactly that.”
He pointed out that aside from financial aid, there is additional support provided by YK,
most notably in establishing a close relationship between scholars and the YK management
team. Scholars are assigned to a “manager” who is just a text or call away when support is
needed.
3
Moreover, he said that interacting with like-minded peers in a facilitative community is
inspirational, as it enables students to encourage each other’s endeavours.

“All in all, always remember that grit and hard work is the key to success, ” said the soon-to-
be-19-year-old, who will be starting his engineering and applied sciences degree at
Columbia University, US.
Fellow YK scholar Fatima Zahra Ahmad Ariff from Kuala Lumpur, who is also turning 19 soon,
will be furthering her studies in computer science at University Malaya.
“I came across YK during a talk when I was in Form Three and I was
determined to work towards it knowing that it could not only help
me financially but also nurture me as a potential leader.
“I chose YK because I am confident that they can aid me with
developing soft skills and other intrinsic values that one has to
have in the working field, ” said the elder of two sisters.
On challenges as a YK scholar, she said that one is expected to
perform, but to her that challenges her to strive for the best.
Established in 2006 by Khazanah Nasional Bhd, YK is entrusted to select, support, groom and
nurture exceptional individuals capable of leading the best organisations in the country as
well as around the world. To date, almost 1,000 prestigious scholarships have been given out.
Through various scholarship programmes by YK, deserving students get the opportunity to
study at premier universities in the US, UK, Australia and Malaysia.
Besides financial support, an integral feature of YK scholarship is the leadership and
development programme which provides scholars with a holistic education to mould them as
not only an individual but more importantly, as a future leader.
