Increasing Availability

Maintenance partnership celebrates over 10 years ofcontinuous improvement

Norilsk Nickel Harjavalta Oy (NNH), located in Finland, is amember of the Norilsk Nickel Group and developscompetitive products and production technology. NNHemploys 230 people and produces roughly 60,000metric tons of nickel chemicals and nickel metalsannually.

Quant has been responsible for maintenance operationsat Harjavalta Industrial Park since 1999, and the TotalMaintenance Outsourcing agreement with Norilsk NickelHarjavalta Oy was recently renewed again for another 3-year term starting in 2015.

Tommi Heikkilä, maintenance manager at Norilsk NickelHarjavalta, explains why NNH wanted to continue theTotal Maintenance Outsourcing agreement: “We wantedto make sure the development of maintenance continuesas it had before, and we saw that Quant has the capabilityto continue this development. We have had, and willhave, many process changes that Quant have adapted,and will adapt to, together with our joint strategy. Thisrequires the maintenance functions to be very flexibleand the communication in this partnership plays a keyrole. Our common target is to optimize OEE and securethe most efficient utilization of our assets,” says TommiHeikkilä.

The current maintenance plan also pays special attentionto predictability and the improvement of maintenancedisciplines. According to NNH’s Senior Manager, PlantServices Kimmo Tuomi, unnecessary production breaksare avoided by executing a service program every fourweeks. This includes continuous onsite conditionmonitoring.

Increased emphasis on OEE (Overall EquipmentEffectiveness) has also improved technical availability,which has risen from 96.7% to 99.6% between 2003 and2010. This represents a decrease of 86% in productionlosses.
