In March 2015, the GermanMinistryofEducationandResearch(BMBF) launchedthede.NBIprojectwiththeaimof establishingaGermany-widebioinformatics infrastructureofferingbioinformaticsservice, training and international cooperation.Now, five years later, the network isoperatingverysuccessfullyandcelebratedits5thanniversarywithasymposiumon13

February2020attheSeminarsCampusHotelinBerlin.

Morethan150scientiststookpartinthesymposium,mostofthemmembersofthenetwork,butalsotheScientificAdvi-soryBoard,membersofthereviewerteam,membersofthede.NBIIndustrialForum,andrepresentativesoftheMinistryandprojectmanagement.

ThesymposiumwasopenedbytheBMBFrepresentativeMatthiasKölbelwhofocusedonthesuccessfulestablishmentofthebioinformaticsinfrastructurewhichnowneedsasustainablecontinuation.Inthefirstsession,thede.NBIcoordinatorAlfPühlerstartedwithanoverviewonthede.NBIhighlights,followedbythreede.NBIpresentationsfocusingonbioin-formaticsforhumans,plantsandmicrobes.Inthesecondsessionexternalexpertspresentedtheirviewsonspecificas-pectsofthede.NBInetwork.TheELIXIRdirectorNiklasBlomberginformedontheELIXIRorganizationanditscoopera-tionwithde.NBI.RolfApweiler,directorofEMBL-EBI,usedhistalktoreportondigitalmedicineinGermanyandEurope.Finally,DietrichRebholz-Schuhmann,directorofZBMED InformationCenter forLife Sciences,presentedhis instituteengagedinhandlingofresearchdatainthelifescience.

ELIXIRGERMANYCOLLABORATIONAGREEMENTSIGNED

On9January2020,theNationalCollaborationAgreementtoestablishtheGermanELIXIRNode(ELIXIR-DE) became effective. This contract was signed by 21 German universities and re-searchinstitutes,includingBielefeldUniversitythatwilltakeoverthelegalroleas‘Represent-ing Entity‘ of ELIXIR Germany. TheNationalCollaboration Agreement is the legal documentthat specifies the organization of ELIXIR-DE and the role of the Central Coordination Unit(CCU).Thiscommitteeisthedecision-makingbodyofELIXIR-DEandresponsiblefortheeffec-

tiveoperationofthenationalELIXIRnode.TheCCUconsistsofninemembers,includingtheHeadofNodeandrepresent-ativesoftheeightserviceunitsofELIXIR-DE.

Inaddition,theELIXIRCollaborationAgreementwassignedbytheRepresentingEntityandtheELIXIRDirector,NiklasBlomberg.Thiscontractbecameeffectiveon10February2020,therebyfullyestablishingtheGermanELIXIRNode.TheELIXIRCollaborationAgreement is the legaldocument that tiestogether theELIXIRHubwith thenationalnodeand itformsthelegalbasisofCommissionedServices.ThesetechnicalprojectsthatguidefutureservicedevelopmentsarefundedthroughthebudgetoftheELIXIRHubandareimplementedbyELIXIRmembersinthenationalnodes.

BJÖRNGRÜNING(RBC)APPOINTEDASLEADOFTHEELIXIRTOOLSPLATFORMInDecember2019ELIXIRannouncednewPlatformLeadsfortheTools,DataandTrainingPlatforms.BjörnGrüning(RBCFreiburg/ELIXIRGermany)wasappointedasPlatformLeadof theELIXIRToolsPlatforms togetherwithSalvadorCapella(ELIXIRSpain)andHervéMenager(ELIXIRFrance).ThePlatformLeadswillserveatwo-yeartermstartingfromthe1January2020.TheyarecollectivelyresponsiblefortheoperationsandactivitiesofthePlatform,andhelptodrivenewdevelopmentsintherespectivetaskareas.ThemainobjectiveoftheELIXIRToolsPlatformistoimprovethediscovery,qualityandsustain-abilityofsoftwareresources.BjörnGrüningisalsoCo-LeaderoftheGalaxyWorkingGroupoftheToolsPlatform,togetherwithFrederikCoppens(ELIXIRBelgium).ThegoalofthisworkinggroupistocontributetothedevelopmentoftheGalaxyplatformandtoprovidespecifictrainingforusers,developersandsystemadministrators.

GUIDELINESFORde.NBISERVICESADOPTEDThede.NBInetworkhassuccessfullyestablishedguidelinesforNodeserviceselectionandqualityassuranceforservicesofferedtothelifescienceresearchcommunitywithinGermanyandEurope.

TheGuidelinesdescribea listofrequiredimplementationsforthe continuationofa certain servicewithin thede.NBIserviceportfolio.Theprocedureissettofacilitatethemonitoringandconstantevaluationoftheexistingservices,aswellashelp intheprocessofendorsingnewonesofferedbyexternalserviceproviders.Withsuchaprocedureinplace, thede.NBInetworkcanguaranteetherelevanceandmaximumperformanceofitsservicesaccordingtothehighestscientificstandards.

NEWRECORD:1,586TRAININGCOURSEPARTICIPANTSIN2019Thefifthde.NBIyearwasverysuccessfulinthefield 'training'. In2015,de.NBI startedwith17training coursesand329participants,with in-creasingnumbersin2016(40courseswith882participants),2017(69courseswith1,489par-ticipants)and2018(77courseswith1,520).Inthelastyear,de.NBIfurtherincreasedthenum-ber of courses and participants: 79 trainingcourses with 1,586 participants. The largestcoursewasattendedby72,thesmallestonebyfourscientists.Approx.75%oftheparticipantswerePhDstudentsorPostdocs.Theremaining25%werePIs,undergraduates,andparticipantsfromindustry.Thegenderratioofthestudentswas56%maleand44%female.About30%oftheparticipantscamefromoutsideGermany.Ingeneral,theusersurveyshowssatisfactionvaluesaround90%.Morethan60trainingcourseswithalargevarietyofscientifictopicsarealreadyannouncedfor2020.

TheFreiburgGalaxyTeamheadedbyBjörnGrüning(RBCFreiburg)announcedthatso-calledmulti-omics reference panel data from the Personal Genome Project UK(PGP-UK) isnowaccessibledirectlyonGalaxyEurope.Thisincludesunprocesseddata,

butalsopregeneratedresults,fromthe10participantswithcompletemulti-omicsdata(whole-genome,methylomeandtranscriptome). InterestedusersofGalaxyEuropeareencouraged touse thedatafor establishingnewworkflows, forowntrainingcoursesandtohonetheirowndataanalysisskills.
