Mobbing = Psychological Harassment;

Mobbing ≠ Normal Conflicts;

Negative effects on health and quality of life:...signs of mobbing include declining morale, decreased profits, decreased productivity,

lower work intensifi- cation, declining commitment, low job satisfaction, and

motivation...leading to decreased profits (Sheehan, 1999)

Harassment comes from the French word

“Harasser” which literally means to sic a

“dog on someone” without provocation

Harassment of a different kind

Evaluation of definition of Mobbing

Konrad Lorenz used to describe animal behaviors (1960s);

Dr. Peter Paul Heinemann used to describe the behaviors of children (1970s);

Dr. Leymann used it to describe the group violence;

Mobbing delineates negative communicative actions, directed against an individual

by one or several others, and often and over a long period of time, characterizing

the relationship between perpetrator and victim (Leyman, 1984).

Psychological harassment is:

...any vexatious behaviour in the form of repeated and hostile or

unwanted conduct, verbal comments, actions or gestures, that affects an

employee's dignity or psychological or physical integrity and that results

in a harmful work environment for the employee (Bill 143 – Quebec).

Five categories of Mobbing in a work environment (Harvey and treadway, 2009)

1. Name calling by a bully in public

2. Increasing work pressure to perform on one individual/group beyond

the level of expectations of others in the organization

3. Sexual harassment of co-workers generally by individuals with a power

differential

4. Physical abuse or harm to a stigmatized individual or group

5. Using a scapegoat by placing the fault for failure on a stigmatized

individual or group in the organization

Psychological harassment is on the Rise…

Health and Safety (NIOSH) bullying in the workplace is on the rise.
