Spore, birth of a gameTED Talk by Will Wright

Will Wright is the creator of “The Sims”, “SimCity” and “Spore”.

Will started his speech by explaining his timein a Montessori school as a child.

Maria Montessori taughtkids the value of learning and exploring with toys.

Spore is a game that shows a creative take on theprocess of evolution. It encourages players to takeany route they so choose to live out the existence ofthey’re made up species.

Mr. Wright showed a great amount of passion towards his studies, explaining how his game could teach things like the dangers of global warming.

Dynamism 4 out of 5:

Although I thought he did a great job showingthe similarities of the Montessori model and hisgame, his speech felt too mellow for somethinghe was so passionate about. Innovating a styleof learning, I would have expected him to be moreenergetic.

Demonstrating the game as an open storywas an interesting twist on Ms. Duarte’s useof data and story to create a presentation.

The only thing I saw that Will really needed to fix was his engagement to the audience.

I felt that it may have been more personable if he had used an assistant to play the gamewhile he talked about it.

I need to remember that I’m speakingto a potentially interested group. I needto acknowledge their existence throughoutmy speeches.

Comparing:Sir Ken Robinson / Will Wright

Both were soft-spoken and passionate about learning through creativity.

My advice to my fellow peers is to show enthusiasm and passion in what you talk about. You know the topic because

you love it; show it.
