Team Nutrition funding, administered through the PA Department of Education, Division of Food and Nutrition was provided to pilot efforts to bring the influences together:

Teams linking the cafeteria, classroom, and community were created at each school.

Teams consisted of

- students - teachers - parents

- foodservice personnel

- coaches

- school nurses

- health educators

- community leaders

- other nutrition supporters

From the October 22, 2002 School Board News, a publication of the National School Boards Association:

If the United States is serious about addressing the obesity crisis, schools must play a role in creating an environment that fosters healthy nutrition and physical activity.

Linking Classroom, Cafeteria,and Community

From “The Team Nutrition Pilot Study: Lessons Learned from Implementing a Comprehensive School-Based Intervention”, a report published by USDA in the Journal of Nutrition Education in 2002:

Relationships formed with parents, local businesses, other educational institutions, health organizations, and the media offer promise for helping to sustain nutrition education efforts.
