Collaboration for Success
A leading US based off-highway equipment manufacturer tasked Geometric to design a mounting bracket for the Front Engine Accessory Drive
(FEAD) system. These mounting brackets have various components such as alternators, pumps, compressors, pulleys, idlers and other auxiliary
components mounted onto it, and often experience various operational G-acceleration loads resulting in high stress levels. Apart from having to
design the bracket to withstand these loading criterions, the design had to accommodate as many fan drive and accessory configurations as
possible. In addition, the bracket had to meet the various strength, weight, and casting requirements.
Geometric helped the customer from concept through production support of the bracket. Initial concepts of the mounting bracket were created
based on generic requirements and casting best practices. Finite element models were developed to carry out various vibration and gravitational
load simulations. Normal mode and forced response analysis was conducted to check for the interference with base vibrations, and then, static and
dynamic G-load simulations to check for the structural integrity of the design. Geometric successfully delivered a production design of the bracket
with fewer iterations and design optimizations. We also assisted in support tasks such as supplier development, prototyping and testing of the
bracket assembly on a test engine, and creation of all production release documents. Through this project, Geometric helped the customer realize
about 80% effective reduction in design iteration time.
