At this place

in 1423 Lodz was

established

Janusz was a man, who sailed on the riverStruga, today which is called Lodka,

from Leczyca province. He used to live under the boat and that is why the name

of our city came from. He sxtarted his family there and his grandsons built the

town – Lodz.

There were a few crests in 588 year history of the town. At the end of 1933 the city

council announced the contest for the new crest of Lodz, but it wasn’t settled and

it was decided to leave the same sign as it is on the seal from 1577.

The city became the

province in 1919. We’ve

got a new province

crest for 9 years. It

consists of the former

crests of lands which

now are gathered in the

province.

The province has got 2 flags since 2002 .

The Liberty Square – isthe central square in

Lodz. It was constructed as a newmarketplace in 1823. It

was built in a veryunusual shape of

eightangle and it was called a New Market.

Since 1919 it has a name of The Liberty

Square.

It is the oldest preserved church in Lodz. In 1888 it was

moved to another place by cart sbecause the city

became bigger and bigger.

Nowadays this larch church is located on Ogrodowa

street.

For many years Lodz was a mulitcultural city. In the photo there is an Orthodox church in

bisantic style (XIX c)

In XIX century there wer

more than 100 thousand

Jews. There is a sybagoge

which Nazists burnt in 1939

Most of lodz manufacturers were

German and Protestants. There is an

evangelical st. Matheo Church

(beginning of XX c.), where

harmoniocal concerts are organized

Nowadays the major

population of the city is

Roman Catholic. The

biggest church is the

Cathedra st. Stanislaw

Kostka which was built in

the beginnning of XX

century in neogothic style.

The most significant streetwas before a track from Leczyca to Piotrkow and from this track it took itsname. Lodz habitantcall itPietryna, Pietruchą. Aninteresting part of the street are utilitymonuments you can sit on.

In the photo there is a „Tuwim’s bench” and a typical rickshaw.

lamps in XIX century.

Rubinstein’s piano. You can hear excellent piano

music after throwing the coin.

pubs on the street

Lodz became a textile

centre in XIX century. The

oldest facotry is Ludwik

Gayer’s „White Factory” .

Now there is a „Textile

Museum” and a scansen

of an urban develoment

from XIX century – the only

one in Poland

This is the

biggest factory

in Lodz. Here is

the factory from

1890.

5 years ago the factory

was rebuilt and renovated. Now it is

Manufaktura, the

biggest shopping and

entertaining center in

Poland. During the renovation all factory

buildings and traditional

structures has been

preserved and joined

with new technologies.

There is City Lodz Museum in

Poznanski’s Palace nowadays

Workers lived in

famuly, built near

the factories

They were founded

by the richest

manufacturers:

Scheibler, Grohma

nn oraz Poznański.

Famul is a familiy

house with three or

four floors and

common staircases

and toilets.

Avarage flat has got

35 m2 i and consists of

1 room, the kitchen

and the pantry

The oldest Lodz Graveyard is „The

Old Cementary” on Ogrodowa

street. It is divided into 3 parts:

orthodox, protestant i catholic.

There is a photo of Karol

Scheibler’s thomb and his factory

above where very modern

apartments are settled down now

.

There is a

Gojżewski’s grave in

the chapel. One

part of the grave is

on the orthodox

part and another on

catholic because

they belonged to

different regions.

There is only one suchplace in Europe. Therewere burried about 200 thousand Jewish peopleimportant for the city.

In part called„GettoField” there were burriedabout 43 000 casualtiesof Lodz getho.

Izrael Poznanski’sthumb is placed in

this graveyard.

In Lodz there is a Star

Alley where we can

see a lot of stars of

Polish directors, actors

and operators such as

Andrzej Wajda.

There is also the

best film university in

Poland. There

are educated

future

actors, directors and directors

of

photography.

A lot of films and cartoons

are made in Lodz. The most

popular and well-known is

Uszatek TeddyBear made in

SE-MA-FOR.

The biggest Garden Park is also

in Lodz.There are a lot of

beautiful flowers but also the

collection of sundials.

For 500 years the city was

surrounded by a big forest.

The rest of it is called

Lagiewnicki Forest where are

2 chapels located - St.

Anthony and st. Roch. There

is also a stream from which a

healthy water leaks.. There isalso Monastery from XVII c.

and a stud farm from XIX c.
