Polish Independence DayPolish Independence Day

The map shows three steps of the partition of Poland made by three neighbour states: Prussia, Austria and Russia. Poland disappeared from the map of Europe for 123 years.

The occupants wanted to impose their culture, habits, language and religion upon Polish people.

Polish people didn’t give up and kept fighting for their independence in insurrections.

In 1914 the First World War started that gave Polish people chance to regain their independence.

On 11th November 1918 the armistice in Copiegne in France was signed. It meant the capitulation of Germany and finished the First World War.

In 1919 after the Treaty of Versailles was signed new states appeared in Europe: Poland, the Czech Republic and Yugoslavia among them.

Józef Oiłsudski who lead the Polish Legions in the Fist World War came to power in Poland on 11th November 1918.
