b) La Relevancia Tecnológica (reducción de costes, innovación, gestionabilidad y tiempo de desarrollo)
Las 2 Acciones de I+D+i seleccionadas como más prioritarias para sector fueron:
19/09/2017 GT.
19/09/2017 GT. Tecnologías de Concentración 22

Masdar develops high-performance concentrated solar power absorber
▪ Masdar Institute said the novel product, developed in partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), absorbs nearly 100 per cent of the sunlight’s energy from the ultraviolet and visible portions of the solar spectrum
▪ The innovative product features an ultrathin nanocomposite film made of silver and silica, topped with silver nanoparticles
▪ Transmission electron microscopes enable us to see through the materials, beyond the surface and deep within the nanocomposite solar absorber,” remarked Dr Zhang.
▪ “With this vision, we observed that traditional solar absorbers, thought to be made of smooth, continuous composite layers, were actually filled with tiny nano-particles of each composite element and large nano-particles on the top surface,”
▪ We discovered that it is the presence of these topping nano-particles that make absorbers more efficient. This knowledge became the basis for development of our nanocomposite film

ARENA (Australian Renewable Energy Agency) push for concentrated solar power in Australia
➢ The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) reports a strong response from industry and investors on concentrated solar thermal (CST).
➢ This follows ARENA’s call for information from industry, solar manufacturers and green energy investors about CST.
▪ It is the most volatile market on earth; at peak the price can go from $100 to $14,000 and back again in 5 minutes ($/MWh)
▪ South Australia has an energy crisis, with the highest prices in the world for peak power after dark. Its evening peak is currently covered by dispatchable natural gas, and never under $100 MWh, but it can be almost unbelievably expensive. “In Australia, price cap is $14,000 per megawatt hour.
▪ Unlike with natural gas, a solar thermal power plant will always have an incentive to push its generation during every evening peak price period rather than withdrawing it to raise prices.
▪ Unlike a gas power plant, withholding stored solar thermal makes no sense.
▪ Danny Price designed the Generation Project Agreement for the South Australian Government: “simply adding a lot more intermittent renewables would just make the peak price problem worse”
▪ The goal was to use the dispatchability of a thermal solar project to get the evening peak prices down

EU-funded research project (Amadeus)
▪ Concentrated Solar Power scientists target 2,000°C thermal storage by 2019
➢ A new EU-funded research project (Amadeus) is now aiming to increase operating temperatures to up to 2,000°C by introducing compact energy storage devices based on molten silicon and solid-state heat to power converters
➢ The ‘Amadeus’ project, led by the Technical University of Madrid (UPM) Solar Energy Institute, could increase storage energy density over 10-fold compared with molten salt systems
➢ Ultra-high temperatures will shift the heat transfer process from conduction or convection, to radiation
➢ Thus, we can eliminate heat transfer fluids, and substitute the conventional heat engines [with] simpler and cost-effective solid-state converters such as infrared-sensitive photovoltaic cells, not requiring working fluids or moving parts
▪ UPM researchers expect their silicon-based TES to cut project capital expenditure (capex) as it is smaller, uses fewer materials and requires less labor to install, than current designs.
➢ TES systems represent 10 to 20% of CSP plant costs
➢ the Department of Energy’s SunShot initiative is targeting a TES cost of $15/kWhth by 2020

Dubai Concentrated Solar Power developers urged to apply Shams 1 desert findings
▪ The Shams 1 plant achieved a 99.5% reliability rate in 2016, generated 9% above expected output levels.
▪ Reduced morning start-up times. When we started operating Shams 1 it took two hours to start up the plant…. Today it takes one hour and sometimes less.
➢ Modifications included a pre-warming line to extract steam from the turbine to warm the plant.
▪ Improved plant reliability by erecting a perimeter wind fence to protect components from high wind levels and shifting dust
▪ The attenuation of solar rays from heliostat to tower due to dust and aerosols is the “biggest technological challenge” for developers in the UAE. The solution is to think about multi-tower technology, because this will reduce the distance between the heliostat and tower
▪ Abengoa announced it had signed an agreement with a Moroccan government agency to forge ahead with the first phase of a project to build the world’s largest renewable energy-driven seawater desalination plant
▪ Abengoa will undertake the engineering, construction, operation and maintenance of the plant for 27 years. The project will produce 275,000 cubic meters (m3) of desalinated seawater daily, to supply 150,000 m3 water for drinking as well as 125,000 m3 for irrigation of 13,600 hectares of farmland near Agadir, a coastal town in western Morocco
▪ According to the Moroccan government, the electricity to power the plant will come in by planned new high-tension wires from the Noor Ouarzazate solar power plant nearly 400 kilometers east of Agadir.

Miraah Concentrated Solar Power Project in Oman –The project will also demonstrate the use of solar for the
oil industry on a commercial-scale▪ Miraah is a proposed 1,021MWth solar thermal facility - $600 million - generating steam at 300 °C to flush out heavy oil at the Amal oilfield▪ Construction of the plant commenced in October 2015, while operations are scheduled to begin in August 2017▪ GlassPoint Solar has been contracted to construct the new solar thermal plant by Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), a joint venture (JV)
between the Government of Oman, Shell, Total and Partex.▪ The project builds from the success of the existing 7MW pilot plant at Amal that was commissioned in February 2013 and has an output of
50t of steam a day.▪ The pilot has been a resounding success,” PDO Managing Director Raoul Restucci said in a testimonial on the company’s website▪ The facility will generate approximately 6,000t of solar steam a day. The use of solar energy will save approximately 5.6 trillion British thermal
units (BTUs) of natural gas a year, which is sufficient to provide residential electricity to approximately 209,000 people in Oman▪ The natural gas used for oil production in Oman currently accounts for more than 20% of the nation’s total gas consumption, more gas is used
to aid oil production than for electricity generation. Use of solar EOR technology could reduce gas consumed at the oilfield by up to 80%, redirecting the gas to the export market or for higher value uses, such as industrial development.
▪ The mirrors will be enclosed with a glasshouse, protecting them from wind, sand and dust storms. The glasshouse will further be equipped with automatic washing facilities, which are capable of recycling the majority of the water used
▪ By eliminating the wind load, GlassPoint is able to use ultra-lightweight, thin reflectors, which are suspended from the roof of the greenhouse,
▪ The glasshouse roof is approximately 6m above ground level, reducing the soiling rate by 50% compared to the use of typical exposed solar designs where the mirrors are placed around 1m above ground.
▪ This has a cascading effect on cost—from reduced shipping costs, installation costs, to using smaller, off-the-shelf motors and drive systems used to track the sun
