What is a “stem-change?” The verbs we have learned in the past are

“regular” verbs. Unfortunately, it can’t ALL be that easy! Some verbs have a stem that changes

along with the ending in some forms. Ex: Jugar Yo Juego

Basics Here are the basic stem-changing groups It will be the last vowel in the stem that changes Notice that all forms change, except in the nosotros

and vosotros forms.

e →e → ie o →o → ue e →e → i Empezar Dormir Servir (to start) (to sleep) (to serve)

Yo empiezo duermo sirvoTú empiezas duermes sirvesUd.,él,ella empieza duerme sirveNosotros/as empezamos dormimos servimosVosotros/as empezáis dormís servísUds.,ellos/as empiezan duermen sirven

Examples of e → ie

Here are some commonly used verbs and their present form conjugation:

Cerrar (to close): Querer (to love, to want): Quiero queremos

quieres quereis

quiere quieren

Examples of o → ue Here are some commonly used verbs and their present form

conjugation:

Almorzar (to have lunch): Almuerzo, almuerzas, almuerza, almorzamos, almorzais, almuerzan

Volver (to return):Vuelvo, vuelves, vuelve, volvemos, volveis, vuelven

Poder (to be able to, to can):Puedo, puedes, puede, podemos, podeis, pueden

Examples of e → i Here are some commonly used verbs and their present form conjugation:

Repetir (to repeat): Repito, repites, repite, repetimos, repetís, repiten

Pedir (to ask for, to order):Pido, pides, pide, pedimos, pedís, piden

Decir (to say): Digo, dices, dice, decimos, decís, dicen

One More! u → ue

You will only see this pattern in one verb: Jugar.
