Preparing Yourselves and Your Adult Students for

Success in WIOA Teaching Career Building Best Practices

with WorkWise!

Cynthia M. Campbell, EdD MAACCE 2017

Tell me about yourself.

Tell me about yourself. •Most dreaded interview question! •Most professionals don’t really know how to answer this question and are often unprepared. If they are wise, they will get coaching to prepare a good answer for this question.

• If the job search process is intimidating for professionals, how much more is it for our adult learners?

Talk with a partner, and share!

• When did you conduct your last job search?

• How did you get your most recent job?

True or False?

1. The first thing a job seeker should do is write a

résumé. 2. Just looking for any job is an effective way to do a

job search. 3. Job seekers only need to create one résumé. 4. The best way to find jobs is through answering job

ads. 5. A job seeker’s online presence is not important. 6. There is no way to prepare for a job interview. 7. Getting a job is the ultimate goal and is the end of

the process.

What academic skills did you see used in WorkWise?

Write your response on a sticky note or email me right now at cmcampbell@goldappleservices.com.

How to use WorkWise

• WorkWise can be used in employability classes and function as textbooks. Instructors can model how to complete exercises, students can work on exercises, and reflect on answers in a group setting. Students can function as peer reviewers on résumés and cover letters. They can also practice interview questions together.

How to use WorkWise

• WorkWise can be given to students for independent study under the mentorship of an instructor or coach. For example, a student can work on a chapter on his or her own and then meet with the coach or instructor to review and discuss the answers.

How to use WorkWise Exercises could also be integrated into regular ABE classes when you want learners to apply their skills in

• Persuasive writing: Writing a cover letter or a professional summary.

• Sequencing and timelines: Working on job history for a résumé, make a timeline of one’s work history (including volunteer work)

• Journal writing, paragraph prompts, or essay prompts: Answer an interview question.

• Research: Find out about careers with the online sources listed in WorkWise. Have students research companies and draft questions they would ask the company in an interview.

• Create LinkedIn profiles: Students apply technology and writing skills.

How to use WorkWise

Use WorkWise in teacher professional development. Instructors can work on the exercises as a study circle and consider what concepts they should emphasize in their classroom context or what new resources they want to share with the students. This can also help in conversing with WIOA partners.
