Important Terminology

and things you should know

before we begin on how to register for classes

Program CurriculumWhat is a program curriculum?

• A curriculum tells you exactly what classes you have to take in order to graduate

• Every program has a curriculum

• You should become familiar with your program curriculum so that you are taking the right classes!

Follow the Program Curriculum

Example: Associate of Science Degree in Mathematics

Course PlanningWhat is a core course?

Courses that must be completed in order to obtain the certificate, diploma or degree

Program specific courses

Program Curriculum

Course PlanningWhat is an elective course?

Courses that are outside of your program of study

Though outside of your program of study, they are still compulsory to meet your program requirements

You need them to graduate!

Course Attributes

Course Planning

What are University Transferable (UT) courses?

These are courses that if successfully completed, their credits are accepted at Universities

To check if a course is UT, find the “U” next to the course

See Red Circle on the right of this page

To see which universities the credits are accepted at, please use the British Columbia Transfer Guide

Course Planning

What are credits?

Credits are hours / points that are earned at the end of each semester

1 class usually equals 3 credits

Some classes are 1 credit or 4 credits.

See the Red Circle on the right side of this page to find out how many credits your course is worth.

9 credits is considered FULL TIME

Three classes usually equals 9 credits

Course Planning

What is a CRN?

A CRN stands for “Course Registration Number”

Each class in the College is assigned a unique CRN

Use the CRN to indicate to the Registration System which class you want to register for.

Finding CRN’s:

1. Go to the Registration Guide and click Here

3. Click on “Get Courses”

Finding CRN’s:

2. Choose the subject of the course that you want

4. Find a class that works for your timetable

Course PlanningFinding a CRN and a class that works for you:

These are the CRN’s. Each

one is unique

This is the course name:

BIOL 1111

These are the number of

seats available in

the class

If there are numbers in this column, that

means there is a waitlist. Put yourself

on the waitlist if needed. The smaller the waitlist numbers

the better!

These are the class dates and times:

M = MondayT = Tuesday

W = WednesdayR = Thursday

F = Friday

Course PlanningSynchronous and Asynchronous Classes – what is the difference!

All classes will be held ONLINE for the fall. There will be no face to face, in person instruction.

There will be two types of classes

1) Online classes that do NOT have live lectures or class participation time - Asynchronous

2) Online classes that have a LIVE lecture or class participation time - Synchronous

Look! No dates and times!

Look! There are dates and times AND the

description tells you what is expected!

Waitlists

What is a waitlist?

A waitlist is a term that is used to describe when a course is full and there are student’s waiting for admittance.

If a class is full, you can add yourself to the waitlist.

Adding yourself to the waitlist does not guarantee that you will get into the class, so it is always a good idea to find anotherclass to register into

Checking for waitlist offers

• Watch the video on waitlists: https://langara.ca/reg-guide/when-you-register/waitlist-for-courses.html

• Monitor your waitlist – twice per day!

Accepting a waitlist offer is NOT AUTOMATIC

• You only have 24 hours to accept a waitlist offer

• Overrides and waitlists will be sent to your MyLangara email

First Semester recommendation.

Try 3 classes.
