Building a Technology Plan
• Form the planning committee• Develop a mission statement• Assess needs• Survey existing programs and resources• Establish goals and objectives.• Develop an action plan• Establish a timeline• Provide evaluation instruments
Form a Planning Committee
• Stakeholders in the school’s success• All subject areas and /or grade levels• Representatives of all levels of expertise• Include implementers/ coordinators of plan• Timelines for plan development• District or outside advisors/consultants• School buy-in important to plan
Consider:
Develop a Mission Statement
• Integration of Technology
• Technology as a tool, not an end product
• Coordination with existing school and district plans.
• Technology skills students will need In 21st
• Development of information literacy for all students.
Consider:
• Ethical use (inappropriate use of resources)
• Legal compliance
Develop a Mission Statement
Assess Needs
• Survey of staff, students, parents, community• Matching needs with the mission statement• Matching district goals, frameworks, etc• Changing Demographics• Student technology needs determined by
assessments and performance.• Accreditation reports
Consider:
• Adequacy of all staffing – certified and professional
• Technology skills of staff• Software – computer video etc.• Hardware, including equipment
peripherals, networking , etc• Facility needs (furniture, network wiring,
etc.
Assess Needs
Survey Existing Programs & Resources
• What technology is available on-site• School or district roles and commitments• Student to hardware ratio• Staffing (library media specialists, teachers,
technology mentors, etc.• Staff development, in-services, etc.• Physical plant: phone, video, electrical wiring & space
limitations.
Consider:
• Relationships of existing resources to technology plan goals
• Off-site resources, i.e.., business partnerships; county, state, regional agencies and programs.
Survey Existing Programs & Resources
Establish Goals and Objectives
• Integration of technology into the curriculum.
• Competencies for teachers, students & administrators.
• Ongoing staff development• Staying abreast of changing technologies
Consider:
• Upgrade on a regular basis• Relationship to student and teacher needs• Relationships to district priorities and goals• Relationship to community, higher
education, and industry• Relationship to regional educational
technology services.
Establish Goals and Objectives
Develop An Action Plan
• Selection and evaluation of educational software to match curricular needs.
• Hardware needed to implement the plan.• Development of a hardware/software
purchase plan.• Maintenance, installation, and repair of
equipment.
Consider:
• Partnerships with business and higher education
• Timelines, use the term phases, not years, to ensure stability.
• Keeping statistics and publishing them
Develop An Action Plan
Establish an Implementation Timeline
• Assessment of teacher needs and their commitment to the plan
• Release time for staff development• Staff development for planning classroom
lessons and activities that use technology• Staff development training in the use of
technology.
