THE PITCH/SPRINGBoaRDS

This is another story that COULD run a full issue, depending on the number of characters that could be involved. On the other hand, if we keep it simple, without the numerous red herrings I generally like to include, it could also be done in 12 or 14 pages.

The gang visits a Psychic Fair where believers of the supernatural and curiosity seekers get together to discuss otherworldly matters. Shaggy and Scooby are disappointed and creeped out. They were expecting a traditional county fair with rides and food--lots of food--but this is a spooky event being held on a fog-enshrouded island at an old castle.

Velma has her palm read and she is warned about impending danger. The fortune teller sees Velma being menaced by a terrible evil. The gang has mixed feelings about this--they have solved enough mysteries to not believe in ghosts and monsters, having debunked many a "supernatural" mystery, but they also know that wherever they go, trouble follows. They have a certain amount of celebrity here as sleuths. Also present are SBI (Supernatural Bureau of Investigation) agents Skully and Muldare--individuals who routinely debunk charlatans.

During the fair, a monster appears and frightens away many of the attendees. Some of the psychics, the gang, and the agents stay behind to investigate. The psychics want to hold a séance to see if the spirits who inhabit the castle will help them uncover the monster and its reasons for being there. A ghostly voice tells them that someone present is trying to fool them. Skully and Muldare disbelieve the whole thing. There's no such thing as monsters and ghosts!

The Monster shows up again, wreaking havoc. The gang splits up to try to follow the monster. Velma disappears in a secret passage way, and just as the monster is about capture her, a mysterious force helps her escape. She rejoins the gang, who set out to find the monster once and for all. They are given help in tracking down the monster by the unseen force. Ultimately, the monster is unmasked as being a trick of Skully and Muldare, who are revealed to be impostors who have made it their mission to convince the world there are no such things as monsters.

Skully and Muldare are taken away, but the question remains--who was the mysterious force who helped our heroes? Is it possible there really are ghosts?
