I. EXECUTIVESUMMARY

Thisproposalisforaninterdisciplinary,interdepartmentalPhDinComputationalMedia,Arts&Cultures.ItissupportedbytheDepartmentofArt,ArtHistory&VisualStudies,thePrograminLiterature,theInformationScience+StudiesGraduateCertificateProgram,andtheFranklinHumanitiesInstitute.Ithasbeenendorsedbymanysenioradministrators,facultyandstafffromaroundcampus.TheMellonFoundationprovidedprogrammaticstartupandendowmentfundsfortheprogram.ThesefundswerematchedbytheGraduateSchoolandTrinity.Currentresourceswillsupport3newlinesover5years.FundsforadditionallineswillcomefromComputationalMediaMArevenues,partnercontributions,grants,andtargeteddevelopment.

ThePh.D.programismeanttobesmall,experimental,andinterdisciplinary.Itsfocusisontheintersectionofmediaartsandhumanities,sciences,andtechnology,bothintheoryandinpractice.Atthecoreoftheproposalisthecomputationalrevolution,anditsimplicationsforhowwelive,think,work,create,andcommunicatewithinandacrossvariousdisciplines.Ratherthanbeingthepurviewofanyonediscipline,thestudyandcreationofcomputationalmediaispartofmany.Criticalengagementwiththeglobal,socialandculturalimpactofcomputationalmediaisacentralfeatureandvalueoftheprogram,alongsidemediaaffordancesandeffectswithinexistingandemergingfields.

TheCMACPh.D.willbehousedintheSmithWarehousealongsidetheDepartmentofArt,ArtHistory&VisualStudies.StudentswillbeaffiliatedwiththeinterdisciplinaryartsandhumanitiesmedialabsledbytheCMACprogramfaculty.Currentresearchlabemphasesincludedigitalarcheology;emergentmediaarts;informationscience+studies;digitalarthistory&visualculture;art,lawandmarkets;digitalhumanities;mediatheory;andphysicalcomputing.TheFranklinHumanitiesInstituteLabs,aswellasBassConnectionsprojects,alsoofferpotentialopportunitiesforstudents.

ThePh.D.programrequirementsincludeaproseminarfocusedoncriticalmediatheoryandpractice,coursesoncomputationalmediamethods,seminarsrelevanttomediastudiesandsubject-areaspecialization,humanitiesandinterdisciplinarylab-basedpracticumexperiences,andtheproductionofahybriddissertation.Studentswillbeexpectedtodemonstratecodingcompetencyasatleastoneoftheirtwolanguages.Thismightinvolve,forexample,dataanalysis/mining,softwaredesign,oradvancedscriptingforinteractivemedia.

Thecollaboratingunits,Art,ArtHistory&VisualStudies,Literature,ISS,andFHI,willworkjointlytoorganizeadmissionsandadvising.Corefacultywillserveasthesisadvisorsandlabmentors,alternateteachingtheproseminar,andofferseminarsrelevanttotheprogram.Affiliatedfacultycomefromawiderangeoflocationsaroundcampus,includingthesciences,socialscienceandengineering,andwillworkwithstudentsascommitteemembersandpotentialco-advisorswhenappropriate.Additionalfacultyarewelcometosignonwiththeprogramascoreoraffiliatedfaculty.

ThesmallcohortofdedicatedPh.D.studentsthisproposalwouldcreatewillbejoinedbysevenexistingPh.D.studentsintheVisualandMediaStudiestrackoftheArtHistoryPh.D.,whichwascreatedasabridgewhilethisproposalwasunderdevelopment.TheexistingInformationScience+StudiesGraduateCertificatewillbereplacedbyaCMACGraduateCertificate,consolidatingrelatedeffortsandresources.CMACPh.D.studentwillfindanextendedcohortintheMAinDigitalArtHistory/ComputationalMedia,theMFAinExperimentalandDocumentaryArts,andinPh.D.’sinLiterature,ArtHistoryandotherhumanitiesdisciplineswhoalreadyparticipateinCMACseminarsandlabs.

II. RATIONALEFORTHEPROGRAM

ThisproposalisbeingsubmittedbytheDepartmentofArt,ArtHistoryandVisualStudies,thePrograminLiterature,theInformationScience+StudiesProgram,andtheFranklinHumanitiesInstitute.Allconstitutingpartieshaveconsultedextensivelyontheproposal,andprovidednecessaryclearances,asdemonstratedintheLettersofSupportfromtherelevantChairsandDirectors.

A. INTRODUCTION

In2013,DukereceivedagrantfromtheMellonFoundationtodevelopaninterdisciplinarydoctoralprograminVisualandMediaStudies.ThisComputationalMedia,Arts&CulturesGraduateProgramproposalfollowsuponearlierversionssubmittedtotheGraduateSchoolandhasbenefittedfromextensivefeedbackandrevisionfromawidevarietyofstakeholders.

TheproposalincludesprovisionsforaPhDfocusedontheintersectionofmediaartsandhumanities,sciences,andtechnology,bothintheoryandinpractice.Atthecoreoftheproposalisthecomputationalrevolution,anditsimplicationsforhowwelive,think,work,create,andcommunicatewithinandacrossvariousdisciplines.HumanitiespartnersincludetheDepartmentofArt,ArtHistory&VisualStudies,thePrograminLiterature,andtheInformationScience+StudiesProgramandtheFranklinHumanitiesInstitute(FHI).

ThisproposalculminatestheMellon-fundedVisualStudiesInitiativetopromotetransformativescholarshipacrossdisciplinarybounds.VSIhasresultedinthedevelopmentofavibrant,interdisciplinarycommunityofscholarsinSmithWarehouse,thelaunchofanMFAinExperimentalandDocumentaryArts,anMAinHistoricalandCulturalVisualization,andenrichmentoftheundergraduateVisualandMediaStudiesmajoraswellastheInformationScience+StudiesCertificates.ThePhDbuildsuponexistingfacultystrengthsinmediatheory,digitalhumanities,thehistoriesofmediaandtechnology,newmediaart,andinteractivetechnologies,andreachesouttocolleaguesincomputerscience,statistics,mathematics,neuroscience,andengineeringtoexplorethelatestconceptsandinnovationsincomputationalpracticeandtoapplythemtohumanistictopics.Atthesametime,theprogramanticipatesart-sciencecollaborationsdevelopinginwhichtheinfusionofartisticanddesignprinciplesandtheopportunitytoaddressnovelproblemsalsoadvancethescienceinvolved.

ThePhDalsobringstogetherpartnersworkingseparatelyaroundthecomputationalturnanditsimpactonthearts,humanities,andculture.TheFranklinHumanitiesInstituteisacriticalcorepartnerinofferingacommunityofscholarsinstructuresandinitiativeswhoseinterestsoverlaptheprogramonvariousthematicandpracticallevels.TheproposedcurriculumwilldrawuponthesuccessfulmodeloftheHumanitiesLabs,aswellasHASTAC(thefirstandoldestinterdisciplinaryacademicsocialnetworkbasedattheFHIandtheCUNYGraduateCenterdedicatedtochangingthewayweteachandlearn),theFHI-sponsoredBassConnectionsteams,theVisualStudiesInitiativepartners,DigitalHumanitiesatFHI,andtheConsortiumforHumanitiesCentersandInstitutes(CHCI).

ThisproposalhighlightsLabandhumanitiesinformationaltechnologyconsortiumexperiencesasacornerstoneofgraduateeducationasdevelopedthroughresearchprojects,internships,andtheory-practiceseminarexperiences.Studentsenrolledintheprogramwilldemonstrateintheirthesisand

dissertationworkbothasophisticatedunderstandingofcriticalmediastudiesandanabilitytoauthormajorcomputationalmediaprojects,allwithinthecontextofspecificresearchfocidevelopedaroundpolitical,scientific,aesthetic,social,orhistoricalinterests.Thisnewmulti-departmental+institutemodelforagraduateeducationalofferingdemonstratestheroleforinstitutesinbuildingnew,flexible,andalternativestructuresforinterdisciplinarygraduateeducation,sothatstudentscanbebetterpreparedforcurrentsocietalneedsandintellectualdemands.

B. HISTORYANDBACKGROUND

Overthepasttenyears,Dukehasdevelopedanationalpresenceindigitalandexperimentalmediastudies.TheVisualStudiesInitiativewasintroducedwithsupportfromtheMellonFoundationin2007-12withaninitial$2.4Mgrant.ThatInitiativerecognizedthefacultyoftheDepartmentofArt,ArtHistory,andVisualStudieshadalreadywellestablishedtheirtheoreticalpracticesasinclusiveofculturalstudies,amoveledbyKristineStilesandotherstoincludevisualstudiesmorebroadly,whichiswhywesuggesthousingthenewPhDpartlyinthisdepartment.In2009,theDepartmentaccepteditsfirstgraduatestudenttopursueaVisualStudies-focusedPhD.Afollow-oninternationaltraininggrant(2010-13;$500K)UndertheleadershipofthenAAH&VSChairHansVanMiegroet,theVisualStudiesInitiativeemergedalongsideotherinnovativemediaandtechnologyprojectsatDuke,suchastheJenkinsCollaboratoryforNewTechnologiesinSocietydirectedbyTimLenoir(thenUniversityProfessoraffiliatedwithLiteratureandAAH&VS),theInformationScience+StudiesProgramdirectedbyVictoriaSzabo,andtheemergingWired!LabforDigitalArtHistoryandVisualCulture,directedbyCarolineBruzeliusandSheilaDillon.Thecurrentgrant,tocreateaPhDprogram,wasawardedfor2013-18,andincludes$1.3M+$600Kdonormatchingfunds).

ComplementingtheexistingstrengthsofAAH&VSandoftenwiththesupportoftheMellonFoundation,DukemadeseveralkeyhiresinVisualStudies,MediaTheory,MediaStudies,DigitalHumanities,DigitalArts,andDigitalArcheology.TheseincludedBillSeaman(AAH&VS),MarkHansen(LiteratureandAAH&VS),KateHayles(LiteratureandEnglish),NickGessler(2011,ISS),RaquelSalvatelladePrada(AAH&VS),MarkOlson(AAH&VS)andMaurizioForte(ClassicalStudiesandAAH&VS).StaffwithtechnicalandacademicexpertiseworkinginISSandtheVisualizationTechnologyGroupalsojoinedtheefforttodevelopVisualStudies,notablyPatrickHerron(InformationScience),andToddBerreth(ArchitectureandInteractionDesign),andHannahJacobs(DigitalHumanities).EricMonson,aphysicistwithdatabaseandvisualizationexpertise,hasmovedontotheLibrariesbutcontinuestocoordinatetheVisualizationandInteractiveSystemsinterestgroup.

SupportingallofthesedevelopmentsaspartofaclearlystatedfocusonVisualStudiesinitsStrategicPlan,DukesupportedAAH&VS,VSI,andtheabovementionedprojectsbyretrofittingexistingfacilitiestoaccommodateinnovativetypesofcollectiveresearchasDukeUniversityin-kindcontributionstotheMellongrants(SmithWarehouse,Bay11-10,15,000sq.ft.)andestablishedseveraloperationaldigitallaboratoriesatDuke;seehttp://today.duke.edu/2013/10/artsandscienceandvideohttp://vimeo.com/95931916.Thisnewareawasshowcasedasaninnovative,influentialDukeinitiativeintheIvyPlusconference(June2014),organizedbyMichaelJSchoenfeld,DukeVicePresidentforPublicAffairsandGovernmentRelations.Thesespaceseffectivelyserveasaninterdepartmentalcollaborativespacewithfaculty-ledLabs,exhibition,andteachingspaces.TheInterdisciplinaryLabscurrentlyinclude:

Inadditiontothesefaculty-ledLabsinSmith,therecentyearshaveseenmanynewgraduateseminarsinVisualandMediaStudiestaughtbyalargergroupofAAH&VSandLiteraturefaculty,andrelatedofferingsinthenewMFAinExperimentalandDocumentaryArts.

FollowingonthesuccessesofthefirstVisualStudiesInitiativeMellongrant,DukereceivedasecondMellongrant,withPaulaMcClainintheGraduateSchoolandHansVanMiegroet(AAH&VSChairatthetime)asco-PIs.Thisgrantsupportedthedevelopmentofatrans-disciplinaryPhDprograminVisualandMediaStudies,capitalizingontheinnovationsofthefirstVSIproject.Theprimarycollaboratorsinthe2013Mellongrantproposalwerehumanities–basedacademicprograms,theJenkinsCollaboratory,InformationScience+Studies,andscience-basedcollaboratorsinvolvedintheproject.OurprospectiveCMACfacultyhasalsocollaboratedwiththePrattSchoolofEngineering(mostnotablywiththeDukeImmersiveEnvironment,whereseveralfacultymembersarepersonnelonarecentNSFgrant),DukeLawSchoolandtheNicolasSchooloftheEnvironment,theFitzpatrickInstituteforPhotonics,andtheDukeInstituteforBrainSciences.SubsequentrevisionsoftheproposalhaveledustorevisethenameoftheprogramtoComputationalMedia,Arts&Cultures,whichreflectsthehumanitiesoriginsoftheproposalanditsrequirements,whileatthesametimeleavingroomforfuturegrowth.

TheimpactoftheVisualStudiesInitiative,whichincludedramp-insupportforthenewfacultymembersnotedabove,incombinationwithotherinformationtechnologyandmediaengagementsoncampushasbeensubstantial.Attheundergraduatelevel,theVisualandMediaStudiesMajorinAAH&VSsurpassedtheenrollmentsoftheotherdepartmentalmajors,whiletheinterdisciplinaryInformationScience+Studies(ISS)programcoursesinmediaproduction,informationtechnologyandappliedcomputationcontinuetogrowinpopularity.VSIsupportedthecreationofboththenewMFAinExperimentalandDocumentaryArtsandtheWired!MAinHistoricalandCulturalVisualization.TheVisualStudiesInitiativehasaddressedworkacrossabroadspectruminthehumanitiesfromcriticaltheory,materialculturestudies,andphotography,filmandtelevisionstudiestoart,lawandmarkets,arthistory,urbanismandarchitecture,psychoanalysis,culturalanthropology,philosophy,globalandculturalstudies,andtraumastudies.Ithasalsoengagedthenaturalsciences,economics,mathematics,engineering,medicalimaging,cartography,circuitdesign,informationscience,logic,neuroscience,gamingandthemanyzonesofdigitalproductionincommercialandpublicsectors.Wehavedevelopedaninternationalreputationaseriesoftechnologically-intensiveinternationalresearchprojectswithcolleaguesinEurope(France,Germany,ItalyandTheNetherlands)thatinvolvebothresearchandteaching,andourfacultyaresoughtoutforMAandPhDadvisingbystudentsfromJacobsUniversity,Ca’FoscariandothersasadirectresultoftheVSIcollaborations.

Throughalltheseefforts,overthelastfiveyearsDukehasgainedrecognitionasamajorplayerinthestudyandproductionofdigitalandcomputationalformsofknowledge.AformalPhDprograminthisemergentfieldwillconsolidateDuke’sleadershiproleinthisemergingfield.

Althoughournascentinterdisciplinaryprogramhasachievedagreatdeal,thefoundationalprogramofourinitiative,thedoctoralstudyinVisualandMediaStudies,istechnicallystillapartofthegraduateprogramofArtHistory.ThoughthishasallowedustoadmitalimitednumberofgraduatestudentswithintheVisualandMediaStudiestrack(9),webelievethatthecross-disciplinarypotentialoftheprogramisnotcurrentlyoptimizedatthelevelweoriginallyenvisionedinourVSIproposalof2007.Wewanttomaintaintheconnectionwiththehumanities,butalsoneedtoelevatetheprogramtoatrulyuniversity-widestatus,whilebroadeningitsscopefromVisualandMediaStudiestothemoreinclusiveComputationalMedia,Arts&Cultures.

TheLiteratureProgramhasbeenanongoingpartnerinthisinitiative.TwooftheVSIfacultyhiredundertheVSIgrant,N.KathrynHaylesandMarkHansen,arehousedthere,andteachmanyofthemediatheoryanddigitalhumanitiescoursesrelevanttotheprogram.Theyaremajorleadersininthefield,andhavedirectedthedissertationsofgraduatestudentswhohavealreadybeensuccessfulincombiningsubjectareaknowledgewithdigitalexpertise.InformationScience+StudiesProgramisakeyplayeraswell.NickGesslerandPatrickHerron,ResearchScientistsinISS,areinvaluablefortheirknowledgeofphysicalcomputing,complexsystems,informationscience,anddatamining.

BeyondtheresourceswithinAAHVS,Literature,andISS,Dukehasinnovatedindigitalscholarshiponavarietyoffronts.TheFranklinHumanitiesInstitutehaspromotedtheLabmodelofinterdisciplinaryscholarshipthroughlimited-termcollaborationsuniversity-side.VSIandtheFHIhavealonghistoryofsharedinterests,asreflectedintheFHILabs,whichhaveincludedGreaterThanGames:TransmediaApplications,VirtualWorlds,andDigitalStorytellingLab(co-directedbyKateHayles,TimLenoir,andVictoriaSzabo),theAudioVisualitiesLab,BorderWorksandmore.ThePhDLabforDigitalKnowledgetheHaitiLab(co-directedbythecurrentFHIDirector,DeborahJensonandLaurentDubois).TheBorderworksandtheAudiovisualitiesLabshavealsobeensitesofoverlappinginterest.Inaddition,severalprojectsinBassConnectionsInformation,SocietyandCulturethemeandNeuroHumanitiesthemehavesharedinterestsandpersonnelwiththeVSIcommunity.Computationallymediatedscholarlyandcreativeoutputshaveincludedpaperanddigitalpublications,exhibitions,games,andperformances.

InpartnershipwiththeinternationalHumanities,Arts,SciencesandTechnologyAllianceandCollaboratory(HASTAC),thePhDLabinDigitalKnowledge(foundedbyCathyDavidsonandcurrentlyco-directedbyDavidBellandVictoriaSzabo),hasprovidedopportunitiesforgraduatestudentsfromavarietyofdisciplinestocometogetheraroundthechallengesandopportunitiesdigitalformsofknowledgeproductionoffer,withspecialattentiontodigitalpedagogyandsocialmedia.ThePhDLabstudentsco-authoredavolumeintheprestigiousUniversityofMichiganDigitalHumanitiesseries.TheHumanitiesWritLargeinitiative,alsofundedbytheMellonFoundation,hasofferedseedgrantsandsupporttovariousfacultyaroundcampusinterestedindigitalscholarship.In2015theFHIalsocommittedtosupportathree-yearDigitalHumanitiesInitiativetocontinueandextendthiswork,andtobringtogetherthedisparatestrandsofdigitalhumanitiesandcomputationalmediaoccurringaroundcampus.

TheLibrarieshavealsodemonstratedtheircommitmenttocomputationallymediatedscholarlypracticesthroughthehiringoftwoDataVisualizationSpecialists,andanewDigitalScholarshipServicesDirector.FacultyandstudentsinvolvedinVisualandMediaStudiesandrelatedactivitiesinSmithWarehousealreadyworkcloselywiththesestaffoncourses,projects,workshops,andevents.TrinityCollegehiredaDigitalHumanitiesSpecialistwhoseexpertisecomplementsthatoftheLibrarypersonnel.TheRubensteinLibraryhashiredadigitalhistoryspecialisttoleadtheArchivesAliveinitiative,whichbringsspecialcollectionsmaterialintowidercirculationinpartthroughdigitization

efforts.InBassConnections,theInformation,SocietyandCultureThemeissponsoringanumberofspecialprojectsthattietogetherinformationtechnologyandculture,aswellashelpingsupportteachingintheISSProgram.OIThascommittedtoResearchComputingintheHumanitieswiththehireofaspecialistwithtraininginthatareaaswell.

TheprogramweareproposingcapitalizesontwoofDuke’sareasofstrength:itsenviabletraditionofinnovativeandsuccessfulinterdisciplinaryworkinthedigitalhumanitiesandthevibrantsetofresearchandpractice-centeredengagementsnotedabove.Theprogramwillappealtoawiderangeofstudents,fromalready-accomplishedartistsseekingtoarticulateorexpandtheirresearchprogramstothenewbrandofhybridstudentunabletorepresstheconvictionthatthemediaactivitiescentraltotheirliveshavedeepandconsequentialtheoreticalstakes.Wealsoaspiretocreateanewtypeofhybridpractitionerandscholar,onewhoisconversantwitholdandnewparadigmsofthehumanitiesaswellaswiththoseoftheinformationsciencesandnewmedia.

Futuregraduatesoftheprogramwillhaveanextraedgeandenoughleveragetopursueanewtypeofcareerinhighereducation,multi-mediacompanies,andthecommunity,allofwhichwillincreasinglybedominatedbyrapidlyevolvingcomputationalmedia,newmediaartsandhumaninterfacevisualizationsthatneedtobefullyunderstoodandcriticallyevaluated.Masteryofthesemediaisnotonlycritical,butwillalsoprovidetheoreticalsophisticationandarealizationthatcreativityisapowerful,butoftenneglectedproblem-solvingforceingraduateprograms.Wethereforedeemsolidartistictraininginthecomputationalartsintegraltothisdegreeaswell.

Theworldhastakenadigitalturn.ThemomentisripeforDuketotakealeadershiproleintheshapingofthisstageofinterdisciplinaryknowledge-production.Duke’scommitmenttointerdisciplinarity—clearlyarticulatedintheearly1990sbyPhilipGriffith—providedthefoundationforthelearningexperimentsundertakenbyFHI,ISS,Wired!andDuke’sotherinnovativeinterdisciplinaryprograms.Dukealreadyhastheproperstaffanddistinguishedscholarsessentialtotheprogram’ssuccess.Theyarealreadymentoringgraduatestudentsworkingonprojectswithastrongmediaorcomputationcomponent.Asnotedabove,AAH&VSandotherhumanitiesgraduatestudentswhohaveself-identifiedwithComputationalMedia,Arts&CulturesgoalsthroughtheISSGraduateCertificate,earningVSIgrants,andengagingwithLab-basedprojectshavereceivedprestigioustenure-trackjobsandpost-docs.Otherstudentsengagedinourclassesandlabshaveexhibitedtheirworkatinternationaldigitalartshows,publishedinleadingjournals,andpresentedtheirworkatprestigiousconferences.Wewanttoclearthepathforselectstudentstodoevenmore,alongsidethewidercommunityofinterestedscholars.

C. ANINTERDISCIPLINARY,INTERDEPARTMENTALPROGRAM

Thisnewproposalisintendedtorealizethecreationofaninterdisciplinary,interdepartmentalPhDinComputationalMedia,Arts&Cultures.Afterextensiveconsultationandreflectiononthebestwaytoconstructaprogram,wehaveidentifiedtheDepartmentofArt,ArtHistory&VisualStudies,ThePrograminLiterature,theInformationScience+StudiesCertificateProgram,andtheFranklinHumanitiesInstituteascoreprogrammaticpartners.Weembracethepossibilityofexpandingtoincludeascorecollaboratorsotherdepartmentsandprograms,aswellasindividualfacultywithrelatedinterestsandexpertise.

Becausetheirinitialnumberswillbesmall,theprogram’sPhDstudentswillfindtheircohortsinArt,ArtHistory&VisualStudies,Literature,Music,ComputerScienceandotherrelateddisciplineswhere

computationalmediaformsarebeingstudiedandexplored,intheoryandinpractice.WeanticipatestrengtheningtheseinterdisciplinaryconnectionsbyofferingareframedInformationScience+StudiesGraduateCertificatethatwillaligncloselywithcorerequirementsinthePhDProgramandofferanextendedcommunity.ThesestudentswillalsomixandminglewithgraduatestudentsfromDuke,UNC,andNCStateinthePhDLabforDigitalKnowledgeattheFranklinHumanitiesInstitute.

TheCMACLeadershipwillensurethatstudentsinthenewprogramareintegratedintothewiderDukegraduatecommunityinthefollowingways:

1. CMACPhDstudentswillbejoinedbytheMAstudentsintheDigitalArtHistory/ComputationalMediafortheProseminarcourse,andinothercoursestaughtbyCMACcorefaculty.

2. CMACPhDstudentswillbejoinedbyCMACGraduateCertificate(formerlyInformationScience+Studies)studentsateventsandactivitiesintheSmithWarehouse.Theywillreceivefirst-roundinvitationstoanyworkshopsandeventsorganizedwiththatgroup,andwillhaveaccesstotheISSLabfortheirowndigitalresearchprojectsrequiringspecialhardwareandsoftware.

3. CMACPhDstudentswillautomaticallybemademembersoftheFranklinHumanitiesInstitute’sPhDLabinDigitalKnowledgeFellowsProgram.Thiscompetitively-selectedgroupofstudentswillbemeetingonbi-weeklybasiswithfacultymentors,andtakesturnsworkshoppingprojectsandsharingideas.PhDLabFellowsalsoshareworkspaceinthePhDLab,andhavetheopportunitytoorganizespeakers,attendconferences,andengageinprofessionaldevelopmentactivitiestargetedatscholarsworkingininterdisciplinaryprogramsandonnon-standarddigitalprojectsaspartoftheirPhDwork..

4. AstheTriangleDigitalHumanitiesNetworkdevelops,CMACstudentswillbeinvitedtomixersandandcross-campuseventsorganizedforthewidercommunity.CMACstudentswillbeencouragedtohelporganizethebiannual,multi-dayCollaborations:Humanities,Arts&TechnologyFestivalincollaborationwithUNCandNCStatestudents(thefestivalrotatesamongthethreecampuses),andtosharetheirownworkatthatvenueandinotherlocalexhibitions.

5. CMACDstudentswillbestronglyencouragedtoparticipateinBassConnectionsandFHIprojectsorganizedbyCMACfaculty,andwillactivelybeintroducedtopotentialmentorsforotherprojectwork.

Instructuringthisprogramasacollaborativeeffort,thisproposaldrawsinspirationfromDuke’slongcommitmenttointerdisciplinarity,aswellasfromothersuccessfulinterdepartmentalPhDprograms.Weanticipatethatthestartupadministrativeandteachingburdenswillbemodest,giventhealready-existinginfrastructure,curriculum,experience,andexpertiseoncampus.Astheprogramgrows,weanticipateitbecomingamajorattractornewstudentsandfacultyinterestedinthecomputationalturnininterdisciplinaryscholarshipandcreativepractice.

Ourproposedprogrambringstogethertherigorofaresearch-basedgraduatestudieswithapracticalandtechnologicalfocusonadvancedtraininginamediapracticeormedia-(anddata)intensivescientificresearchinthehumanities.Thephilosophyoftheprogramisshapedbyaconvictionthattheconditionsforknowledgeproductionintoday’sglobalworldhavebeenfundamentallyalteredbythecomputationalrevolution.Fromexperimentalpracticesinthesciencestoresearchmethodologiesinthehumanities,knowledgehascomeincreasinglytodependonthegatheringandanalysisoflargeaggregatesofdatathatinsomecrucialwayscannotbe“understood”

or“manipulated”withouttheassistanceofsophisticatedcomputationalmethodologies,newformsofvisualizationandmediatechnologies.Thehumanitieshavetraditionallybeendefinedbyprintcultureofananalyticalkind—journalarticles,monographs,andreviews.Contemporarydigitalmediaandnon-textualformsofsociallyengagedscholarlyproductionnowofferanever-expandingfieldofinnovativemethodsofstudyandmodesofinquiry.Theseincludenewresearchmethods,modesofcommunication,andmultiplepresentationstrategies.

TheproposedPhDinComputationalMedia,Arts&CulturesconsolidatetheinnovativeworkofthelastdecadeofmanyDukescholars,offersbothfacultyandstudentsthepotentialtoexplorethesemodesandmethodsandredefinetherelationbetweenhumanitiesandthesciences.Thisnewgraduateprogramalsoreexaminesthedivisionbetweentheoryandpracticethatdefinessomuchofuniversitylife.Theprogram,itsfaculty,andstudentsdirectlyengagewiththerichcontributionsfromthe‘arts,’broadlyunderstoodtoincludethepraxisofhumanisticknowledge,aswellasthevariousappliedsciences.ThroughitsfacultyandstudentsDukehasalreadyemergedasaleaderinthefieldsofdigitalhumanities,mediastudiesandpublicscholarship.ItistimeforthispositivereputationinthetheoryandpracticeofComputationalMedia,Arts&CulturestobefullyinstantiatedinaformalPhDprogram.

ThefocusofthePhDinComputationalMedia,Arts&CulturesatDukewillbetointegratemulti-modalinquiry,includingcomputationaldesign,dataanalysisandnewmediaart,withscholarlyinvestigationattheinterfaceofthehumanities,thesocialsciencesandthesciences.Asscholarsinthedigitalhumanities,wehaveunderstoodthatcomputationalmediahasprofoundlytransformedtheresearchparadigmsandepistemologyofthehumanitiesandthemanydisciplinesitaffects.Wehavenotedthatstudentsarenolongerpassiveconsumersofacademicknowledgebutalsoactiveproducersofnewdigitalcontent,withthepotentialtoapplynewthinkingandcreativeenergytomoreestablishedmodesofresearch.Toaddressthisinthecontextofaresearchuniversityitisourmissiontoattractanewgenerationofhybridscholarsandstudentsforwhominterdisciplinaryconnectionsbetweenthehumanities,socialsciencesandthescienceshavebecomeessential.

Akeycomponentoftheprogramisthe“horizontal”dimensionoftheenvisionedintegrationoftheoryandpractice.Studentswillbeexpectednotsimplytocombinesometheoreticalendeavorwithsomepracticalcomponent,buttodosoinsuchawaythatthetwobecomeintegrated,allowingthemtointegrateseeminglyunrelatedfieldsofinquiry.Thus,farfromformingamereillustrationorinstantiationofagoverningtheoreticalprogram,mediapracticewillhereperformsignificanttheoreticalworkofitsown,leadingtoascholarlyresearchprogramthatisfullyresponsivetotheuniqueaffordancesofourdigitalcultureandtothegenerationalproclivitiesoftomorrow’sculturalinnovatorsandleaders.OurstudentswillbeencouragedtopresentscholarlyandcreativeworkinvenuesliketheSocietyforLiterature,ScienceandtheArts,ACMSIGGRAPH,theInternationalSocietyforElectronicArts(ISEA),theHumanities,Art,Science,andTechnologyAllianceandCollaboratory(HASTAC),andArsElectronicaaswellasintheinnovativebranchesofmoretraditionalacademichumanitiesandsocialsciencevenuessuchastheModernLanguageAssociation,theCollegeArtAssociation,theAmericanHistoricalAssociation,theSocietyforClassicalStudies,andtheNationalCommunicationAssociation.Research“publications”byourstudentswillsimilarlyincludedigitalvenues,realandvirtualexhibitions,andmoreconventionalprintmediaformats.

Whatthesestudentsgainfromtheseexperiencesisnotonlyawaytopushtheirownlimits,butalsotounderstandthefundamentalvalueofcollaborationtonewformsofknowledgeproductionmediatedbycomputationalpractices.Technologiesofcommunication,analysis,anddesigncanscaffoldunderstandingbyinstantiatingcoreprinciplesintosoftwareandinteractiveenvironments;methodsofinterpretationcantravelacrossdisciplinesasmetaphorsoragents.Adatabaseinfrastructureincludescuratedcategoriesofmetadataandstandardizedformatsthatshapetheconstructionofhistoricalarchivesorinteractivemedia;atextanalysissystemincludesscholardesigneddocumenttypedefinitions,stoplists,andqueriesthatshapeitsresults;GISsoftwaretoolsembedassumptionsaboutthevaluesofscaling,proximityandspacetoanalysisandinterpretation;3Dmodelingandenvironmentsmayprivilegeinteractionspeedoververisimilitude,orcompletenessoverambiguity;time-basedmediamayprivilegeruntimeandexperiencedtimeoverelapsedtime.Facilitywiththeseresources–andwiththeabilitytocritiquethemintheoreticalandculturalterms–areattheheartofourprogram.

Oneofthekeygoalsoftheprogramisthatwewanttoteachourgradstudentstothinkalgorithmically(aswellasvisually,temporally,critically,historicallyetc.).TothisenditisimportantthatallPh.D.studentsacquireproficiencyincertaincomputerlanguages.RequirementsoflanguageandtoolproficienciesarecommonpracticeamongPh.D.programs.CandidatesforthePh.D.inhumanitiesdepartments,forexample,aretypicallyrequiredtodemonstrateproficiencyintwonaturallanguagesrelevanttotheirresearchfield,suchasFrenchandGerman,orChineseandKorean,etc.SimilarlycandidatesforthePh.D.inPhilosophyaretypicallyrequiredtodemonstrateproficiencyinthefieldsofpropositionallogicandmodallogic;whilestudentsinEconomicsarerequiredtobeproficientinareassuchasdifferentialequationsandstatistics.

Wewillrequirestudentstohavetraining—equivalenttoonesemester—inaprocedurallanguage,suchasC,Java,orPythonorequivalentexperience.Thistrainingwillfulfilltheroleofastandardlanguagerequirement,andcanbemeteitherthroughtestingorcoursework.Theymaydemonstratethisbackgroundpriortoadmissionthroughcoursework,participationinsummerworkshops,ordemonstrationofskillsdevelopedthoughself-study.Studentswillalsobeencouragedtotakeuptotwoundergraduatecourses(orgraduatecourses)inComputerScience,Statistics,orotherrelevant

E. CHARACTERISTICSOFTHECONSTITUTINGPARTNERS

ThedepartmentofArt,ArtHistory,andVisualStudies(AAH&VS),theLiteratureProgram,theFranklinHumanitiesInstitute(FHI)andtheInformationScience+StudiesProgram(ISS)arecollaboratingtoco-sponsorthesenewgraduateprograms.

Ourcorecollaboratorsincludeastrongbalanceofestablishedtheorists,historians,andpractitioners.Art,ArtHistory,andVisualStudieshaspursuedaninterdisciplinaryvisionofgraduateformationsincetheestablishmentofitsPhDPrograminArtHistoryin1991.Thedepartmentwasrenamedin2006tobetterreflecttheresearchandteachinginterestsofthefaculty,andtheVisualStudiesundergraduatemajor,thedesignofwhichwasledbyKristineStiles,wasinstantiatedin2009.TheDepartmenthasalsoshownitsabilitytosuccessfullypartnerwithotherunitsinthecreationofanotherterminaldegree,theMFAinExperimentalandDocumentaryArts(co-directedandoperatedsince2012withtheCenterforDocumentaryStudiesandtheArtsoftheMovingImageProgramatDuke)..

Duke’sPrograminLiteraturetakesaphilosophicalandtheoreticalapproachtomanydifferentculturalphenomenathatstudentsandfacultyworkon,alongsidefilm,video,andthenewmedia,andalongsideculturalstudiesbroadlyconceived.Facultyintheprogramareintheforefrontofthinkingcriticallyaboutmediaandculture,andareleadersinthefieldsofmediatheory,digitalhumanities,andscienceandtechnologystudies.ManyarealreadydoingtheworkofthePhDprogramasmentorstoindividualstudentsinsideandoutsideofLiteratureitselfthroughthemanyinterconnectionsnotedabove.

InformationScience+Studies,asaresearchcenterandcertificateprogram,providesgraduatestudentscriticaltraininginresearchtechnologyandnewmediaproductionmethods.Asahubforgraduatestudentsinterestedinphysicalcomputing,digitalmapping,webdevelopment,appdesign,andothertechnologicalinnovations,itconnectstheoryandpracticecoursesthroughitsprograms

andactivities.TheadministrativestaffmembercurrentlyassignedtosupportingISScouldtakeontheroleofDGSAfortheproposedprogram,withtheBusinessManagementroleundertakenbytheBusinessManagerwhocurrentlyservesAAH&VSandtheMFAEDAProgram.

TheFranklinHumanitiesInstitutebringstotheprojectfundingfortheDigitalHumanitiesInitiative,staffedcoordinationofinterdepartmentalefforts,studentaccesstoitsvariouslabsandlearningopportunities,andfundingforvisitingscholars.Itoffersthepotentialtoappointgraduatefaculty(pendingapproval),whocouldinturnserveontheMAandPhDCommitteesofthegraduatestudentsintheprogram.

TheComputationalMedia,Arts&Culturesprogramwillalsoworktointegratevisual,digitalandcomputationalinitiativesacrossthecampus,likethatofthe"BigData"InformationInitiative(iiD)andthe"BassConnections,allofwhichareinterconnectedwithbothISSadFHI.ItwilltakeadvantageofexistingrelationshipswiththeLibraries,DataandVisualization,DigitalHumanities,andInformationTechnologyresourcesoncampusandbuilduponthemfortrainingandconsultingpurposes.TheproposedPhDprogramoffersDuketheopportunitytotakealeadershiproleinmodelingthefutureofthehumanitiesandtheinterpretivesocialsciencesaspartofthiseffort.

F. RATIONALEFORADISTINCTPROGRAM

ThePhDprograminComputationalMedia,Arts&CulturesisdistinguishedfromotherdegreesofferedatDukebyitsfocusoninteractive,digital,andcomputationalscholarshipacrossmediaplatformsthatsignificantlyinclude,butarenotrestrictedtotext-basedintellectualproduction.Atpresent,studentswithanon-textbasedcomponentintheirresearchtendtoworkatthemarginsoftheirprograms.Theyfacethechallengeofsatisfyingconventionaldepartmentalrequirementswhilealsoengagedinintellectualproductionwithoutproperrecognitionorsupport.Thisisalsotrueofstudentsinterestedinbringingquantitativeandcomputationalapproachesto“humanistic”research.Theirextra-departmentaladvisorsmayhailfromvariouspartsofcampus,andtheirareasofspecializationmayincludesubjectsnotcoveredbytheirhomeprograms.ThenewPhDprogramwillbringtogetherthesestudentswithprimaryinterestsintheoryandpractice,whilealsocatalyzingthebroadstudentinterestthatalreadyexistsatDukeinpublicscholarship,anddigitalandcomputationalmediawithinthehumanitiesandinterpretativesocialsciences.

Theprogramascurrentlyconceivedbringstogetherexistingsubject-areagraduatecoursestaughtbythecorefacultyinAAH&VS,Literature,Music,ClassicalStudies,Mathematics,ISS,andothers.Studentsintheprogramwillstudydigitalmediaforms,informationsciencetechniques,andsociallyengagedpractices,deployingthemtotransformacademicresearchwithintheirspecificareasofinterest.TheywilldrawuponDuke’sextraordinaryfacultyandstaffforexpertiseinmediatheory,culturalcriticism,mediastudies,mediahistory,digitalhumanities,computationalanalysis,andsociallyengagedintellectualproduction.Whileourstudentswillparticipateactivelyinseminarsandactivitiesinotherdepartmentsandprograms,nootherexistingdegreeprogramatDukecanofferthemthedistinctivetheory/practicefocusandrequirementsthatareproposedintheprogram.Byofferinglabexperiencepracticumsalongsidetheoreticalandhistoricalengagementswiththedigital,thePhDinComputationalMedia,Arts&Cultureswillencourageinteractionamongtheseunits,whileremainingdistinctfromthem.

WeanticipatetheFranklinHumanitiesInstitute,undertheleadershipofDeborahJenson,willplayakeyroleinenvisioningandsustainingtheinterdisciplinaryprogram.JensonhaspreviouslycollaboratedwithSzaboonpeer-revieweddigitalpublicationsandonmediaarts-relatedteaching.Jenson’sworkinNeuroHumanitiescrossesdisciplinaryandschoolboundaries.FHIwillprovideaninstitutionalrelationshipforfacultyoutsideAAH&VSandLiteraturewhoareparticipatingintheComputationalMedia,Arts&CulturesPhDprogram,andprogrammaticsupporttograduatestudentsinvolvedinboththePhDandtheGraduateCertificateprograms.ThecollaborationwiththeFranklinHumanitiesInstituteensurestheinterdisciplinarityofthePhD,providingpotentialresearchconnectionsnotonlytoindividualdepartmentsandprogramsbutalsorelevantInstitutesandInitiativesfromaroundcampus.Inaddition,theFHIistheportalfornumerousgrantsfromtheMellonFoundation,akeyfundingsourcefortheComputationalMedia,Arts&CulturesPhDprogramanditsfuturedevelopment.BringingintheFHIasafullpartnerinthisinterdisciplinaryprogramhastheaddedbenefitofstrengtheningtheUniversityconnectionswithMellonandbuildseffectivelyonexistingpartnershipsandnetworks.

Weanticipatetheimpactonotherprogramstobepositiveinthesensethatwewillprovideresourcesandsupporttoexistinggraduatestudentswhoareunderserved,aswellasraiseDuke’sprofilesasaleaderinComputationalMedia,Arts&Culturesandrelatedfields.OvertimetheMFAinExperimentalandDocumentaryArtshasshownitselftoattractstudentsinterestedinexplicitlydocumentarypractices,ofteninphotographyandfilm.Whilethereissomepotentialoverlapamongststudentinterests,thisisemphasisisdistinctfromourexplicitfocusoncomputationalpracticeandthetheoreticalandcriticalculturesofmedia,artandcomputation.Similarly,theMAinHistoricalandCulturalVisualizationhasevolvedtobefocusedmostexplicitlyonmuseumexhibitionpracticesforarthistory,architecture,andvisualculture.ThisprogramwouldservetheneedsofabroaderrangeofgraduatestudentsinterestedinDigitalHumanitiesandComputationalMediaasscholarlyandcriticalformsfoundinacademia,publishing,andindustry.

Werecognizethatthoughourprogrammaticobjectivemayvary,wepotentiallyshareannumberofdigital“tools”andcritical/theoreticalfoundationsforourwork.Wehavediscussedwithourcolleaguesthepossibilityofsharingourpractice-basedcourseswithboththeMFAEDAprogramandtheMAinHistoricalandCulturalVisualization.Ourviewisthathavingourgraduatestudentsmixandminglethroughthepractice-basedcoursesofferedbyourvariousprogramsisbeneficialinitsownright.ComputationalMedia,Arts&CulturesfacultyarecommittedtoofferingtheProseminarcourseeveryyear,andwelcometheopportunitytoshareorevenmergethisProseminarcoursewiththatinHCVISifallpartiesareinagreement.

FortheexistingMAinHistoricalandCulturalVisualizationsponsoredbyArt,ArtHistory&VisualStudiesthisprogramaddsafewnewstudentstotheexistingProseminarandpractice-basedcourses.Thecommunityofstudentsstudyingdigitalhumanities,humanitiesdata,visualizationandrelatedtopicsalreadyincludesgraduatestudentsfromaroundcampus.Theseseminarstylecoursescouldeasilyaccommodateafewmorestudents.

WeseeclosetiestobothtracksoftheMAinHistoricalandCulturalVisualization.TheDigitalArtHistorytrackissponsoredbytheWired!LabforDigitalArtHistory&VisualCulture,andbringsinacohortofstudentswhoareengagedwiththedigitaltransformationofresearchandpracticeinthefieldsofartandarchitecturalhistory,andwillprovidepartofthecohortofstudentsbroadlyinterestedinthissubjectmatter.SomestudentsinthisprogrammaychoosetopursuetheCMACGraduateCertificateaspartoftheirMAstudies.

InformationScience+Studies(ISS)

InformationScience+Studieswouldseeimmediatebenefitfromtherealizationofthisproject.Infact,theCMACPhDcouldbeconsideredtheculminationofitsprogrammaticobjectives.Establishedin2001,theISSProgram’s“missionistostudyandcreatenewinformationtechnologiesandtoanalyzetheirimpactonart,culture,science,commerce,policy,society,andtheenvironment.”ISSpre-datestheVisualStudiesInitiative,andhasbeenacorecollaboratorinitsdevelopment.ISSpersonnelandresourceshavebeeninvolvedinestablishingandmaintainingtheVisualandMediaStudiesundergraduatemajor,theMFAinExperimentalandDocumentaryArts,theMAinHistoricalandCulturalVisualization,andnowthisproposedinterdisciplinary,interdepartmentalPhD.TheISSlabisalreadyahomeforundergraduateandgraduatestudentsinterestedinmediaandcomputationpractice.

ISSalsopre-datestheBassConnectionsInformation,Society,andCulturetheme,andhasbeenakeyplayerinestablishingitscurricularpresenceoncampus.ISSoffersTAandRAopportunitiestograduatestudentsinterestedindigitalhumanitiesandcomputationalmediatopics,nowinpartthoughitsrelationshipwithBass.ISShousestheInformation,Society,andCultureUndergraduateGatewaycourse(taughtbyHerron,anaffiliatedInstructor),andhasexpandeditskeyISS240:Web-BasedMultimediaCommunicationscoursewiththesupportofBassConnectionsfunds,whichhasprovidedgraduatestudentsopportunitiestoteachsectionsofthispopularandsuccessfulcourse.

ThisisrelevanttoCMACbecauseBassTeachingFellowscurrentlyteachfoursectionsofthecourseeachyear.WhiletheseandothersectionsaresometimestaughtbygraduatestudentsassignedfromtheMFAandAAHVSPhDprograms,thesestudentsdonotalwayshavetherequisitebackgroundorexperiencetoparticipateeffectively.ISSwouldwelcomeacohortofinterestedandcapableCMACgraduatestudentstoteachthesesections,andalsotoTAotherrelevantpractice-basedcourses,suchasComplexSystemsandPhysicalComputing(Gessler).AdvancedCMACstudentscouldalsoteachtheirowntopicalcoursesthroughISS,providingbenefittothemselvesandtotheundergraduatecommunitywhoclamorformoremedia/computationhybridcourses.TheseteachingopportunitieswouldgiveCMACgraduatestudentsteachingexperiencerelevanttotheacademicjobmarketincomputationalmedia,digitalhumanities,mediastudiesandrelatedfields.

TheadditionoftheFranklinHumanitiesInstitutetooursponsoringteamhelpsoffsetanyadditionalpressureonthesponsoringprogramsbyprovidingaspaceforgraduatestudentsinterestedindigitalmediaandcomputationtocometogetherforworkshopsandmutualsupport.TheDigitalHumanitiesInitiativeatFHIhousesthePhDLabforDigitalKnowledge,whichrightnowisoutsideanyformalcurricularstructure.FHIwillbenefitfromtheopportunitytoenrollPhDLabstudentsintheCMACCertificate,andtosupportCMACPhDstudentsindevelopingtheirtalents.

IV. STUDENTSANDMARKETANALYSIS

A. SOURCESOFSTUDENTS

Studentinterestedintheoreticalstudyofcontemporarymedia,science,andartwhohascomeofageinthedigitalenvironmentandwhohasanintuitivesensethatcreativepracticeformsadialecticalcorrelateoftheoryandforwhomthechallengesofhands-ondesignandcreationcompriseanecessaryresourceforcontemporaryknowledgeproduction.ThisstudentwouldhavebeenanidealcandidatefortheoreticalprogramsintheHumanities(suchastheRhetoricProgramatBerkeley,thePrograminComparativeCultureandMediaatMinnesota,thePrograminModernCultureandMediaatBrown,orDuke’sownLiteratureProgram),butwillflourish–andwillberewarded–bytheopportunitytobroadenhertrainingtoencompassnotsimplythecoursesandmaterialscentraltothesekindsofprograms,butalsothediscoursesandpracticesthatlieattheheartofdesigntheory,scientificresearch,andartisticcreation.Thisstudentwilllikelybedrawntoanacademiccareerandwillbeveryopportunisticallyplacedtodevelopnewcurriculumandmodesofscholarshipthatintegratepracticeinsubstantiveways.

StudentCharacteristics

1. Studentinterestedinacareerindigitalhumanitieswithamediaartscomponentwhohascomeofageinthedigitalenvironmentandhasaconviction,likelytheproductofpreviousstudyinterminaldegreeprograms(MAprogramsinartpracticeorarchitectureordesign),thattheircreativepracticewouldbemuchenhancedbythedevelopmentofacutting-edge,theoretically-drivenresearchprogram.Whetherthefocusonsucharesearchprogramiscognitiveneuroscienceorcomputerscience,criticalstudiesofmediaorinformationalcapitalism,videogamedesignandtheoryorthemilitary-entertainmentcomplex,thisstudentseekstointroduceawell-groundedscholarlydimensiontotheirpracticethatwillenhance,guide,andgeneratetheircreativeendeavors.Thisstudentmayhaveaspirationstogoontoacareerinteachingandacademicscholarshipormaysimplywanttobecomeabetter,morecriticallyengagedandsophisticated,artist.

2. Studentwithastronginterestandlikelysomesubstantialtraininginascientificfield(engineering,computerscience,biologicalresearch,cognitiveneuroscience,etc.)whowantstoturntothehumanitiesandmediaartsfortheirculminatinggraduatestudiesandcareertrajectory.Thisstudentrequiresaprogramthatwillretrainherinmethodologiesofresearchinthetheoreticalhumanities,andopennewtrans-disciplinarybridgesforhertorepurposeherscientifictrainingforthepurposesofculturalcritiqueandartistic-creativeproduction.Thisstudentwillbeperfectlypositionedtoseekanacademicpositionintrans-disciplinaryfieldsofresearchwhereherscientificbackgroundwillbeanasset.Shewillbeequallywellpositionedforacareerintheartsorthecultureindustriesandmedia.

Intermsofdemand,evenwithoutrecruitingwereceivemanyapplicationseveryyearthroughAAHVSandLiteraturewhowouldbepotentiallysuitedtothisprogram.Giventhatourenrollmenttargetsare1-2studentsperyearintheearlystagesoftheprogramweanticipatehavingastrongpoolofcandidatestodrawfromrightaway.

Thisstudenthasaninterestintheintersectionofdesign,artsandneuroscience,andworksoncomputergamesasamedium,whichhasbeenresearchedbycomputerscientists,neuroscientistsandgamedesigners.Thefinalprojectisacombinationwrittenthesisandartexhibitionfocusedonneuro-aestheticsintheoryandinpractice.

Thisstudentisacomputerscientist,buthasaninterestinperformancearts,culturalanthropologyandvideo.ThestudenttakescoursesfromhumanitiesdepartmentswhilekeepinghisconnectionstoElectricalandComputerEngineering.Theresultismultidisciplinaryartperformancesthatbringdigitaltechnologies,danceandcriticalthinkingtogether.

Thisstudenthasabackgroundinarcheology,butisalsointerestedinhowtheuseofdigitaltechnologiescantransformresearchinthefield.ThestudenttakescoursesinClassicsandArtHistoryaswellasstudiesvirtualrealitysystems,programming,computerimaging,and3Dmodeling.Theresultisadissertationthatcombinesnumerouspartialrepresentationsofanhistoricsiteintoalayeredvirtualrealityexperiencethatfacilitatesbothopen-endedexplorationbythepublicandhypothetical,annotatedreconstructionscenariosforscholars.

Example4:IncominggraduatestudentwithHumanitiesbackground

ThisstudenthasabackgroundinatraditionalhumanitiesdisciplinesuchasEnglish,LiteratureorPhilosophyandisinterestedinhowdigitalcultureandmodesofproductioncandeepenresearchinthefieldbymovingfroma“closereading”toa“distantreading”(bigdata)approachtoanalysisofagivenculturaldomain.Thestudenttakessubject-areagraduatemethodsandtopicscoursesaroundtheareaofinterest,aswellasstudiesdigitalstorytelling,humanitiesGIS,textanalysis,datavisualization,andStatistics.Theresultisadissertationthatdemonstrateshiddenconnectionsandinfluencesacrosstimeandspacethroughinteractivevisualizationsandawrittenexplication.

B. COMPARISONOVERVIEW

GraduateprogramsinMediaArtswithascientific,computationalortechnologicalcomponentroughlyfallintothreecomparablecategories:(1)graduateprogramswithastrongdesign,art,architectureandengineeringcomponent;(2)graduateprogramswithastrongcomputational,informatics,scienceandtechnologycomponent;and(3)programsemergingfromvisualstudies,visualarts,arthistoryormediaartsdepartmentsorschools.

Fromthe19programswehavestudiedindetail,theMassachusettsInstituteofTechnology(MIT)MediaArtsandSciencesisoneoftheoldest(28years),onlysurpassedinagebytheNYUTischSchooloftheArtsanditsInteractiveTelecommunicationProgram(34years).ComparedtoNYU,MITistheundisputedleaderinMediaArtsandScienceswithits25researchgroups,6jointprograms,3initiatives,at163,000sq.ft.facilityandamulti-milliondollaroperatingbudget.Theyadmit30to40studentsperyearwithacorefacultyof21.TheycovermanyaspectsofMediaArtsandSciences,mostlyinproject-basedlabs,whichisaconceptwehaveappropriated,scaleddownandtransformed

inBays11-10,SmithWarehouse.EquallyinspirationaltotheDukeComputationalMedia,Arts&Culturesprogramistheconnectionbetweenthelabsandthemediaindustry,whichwealsoplantoengageincollaborationwiththerecentlyestablishedMFAinExperimentalandDocumentaryArts(MFAEDA).MIT’sinsistencetopromoteaninnovativeculturethatgoesbeyondknownboundariesanddisciplinesalsofitswellwithinDuke’soverarchingtrans-disciplinaryculture.Finally,encouragingthemostunconventionalmixingofseeminglydisparateresearchareascomplementedbysmallerprogramsinArt,ScienceandTechnologyandAdvancedVisualStudiesisanapproachwewouldliketotestaswell.

TheNewYorkUniversityInteractiveCommunicationsProgramwasfoundedin1979aspartoftheTischSchooloftheArts.Inits34yearsofoperations,italsohaslearnedfromtheMITexampleandits13corefacultyhasdevelopedintoalivingcommunityoftechnologists,theorists,engineers,designers,andartists,whoareuniquelydedicatedtopushingtheboundariesofinteractivityintherealanddigitalworlds.TheprogramonlygrantsaMPS(MastersofProfessionalStudies),whichmakesitlesscompetitiveinanarenawherethePhDisincreasinglybecomingthenorm.Anotherdisadvantageofthisprogramisthatitisnotuniversity-wideandstructuredasadepartment,whichhasseriousoperationallimitationswewouldnotliketoimitate.Itissometimesdescribedasanartschoolforengineersoranengineeringschoolforartistswiththefocusonhands-onapproachtoexperimentation,productionandrisk-takinginahi-techenvironment.Oneaspectoftheprogramwedefinitelywouldliketoincorporateintooursistheexperimentalnatureofthestudentprojectsandtheprogram’sexplicitexpectationthatstudentsareexpectedtoinventanewfield,alongwiththeirpeersandfaculty.

Well-establishedprograms,suchastheDesignMediaArtsatUCLosAngelesortheDigitalMediaprogramatRhodeIslandSchoolofDesignRISDstilloperateonaMFAlevel,asdothoseofferedatOhioState(MFAArt&Technology),ParsonNewSchoolofDesign&Technology(MFADesign&Technology),CaliforniaInstituteoftheArts(MFAArt&Technology),andtheUniversityofDenver(MFAEmergentDigitalPractices).EquallysuccessfulprogramsaspiringtotransitionbetweenMFAandPhDareMediaStudiesattheUniversityofBuffalo(PhD,MFA),Art&TechnologyattheUniversityofTexas,Dallas(PhD,MFA),andElectronicArtsatRensselaerPolytechnicInstitute(PhD,MFA),amongothers.

V. RESOURCESNEEDEDFORTHEPROGRAM

A. BUSINESSPLANANDPROGRAMEXPENSES

Thisisasmall-scale,experimentalprogramattheoutset.CurrentresourcesincludethebalanceoftheexpendableMellonVisualandMediaStudiesPhDgrantofmorethan$500,000,theendowmentunderthesameMellonawardof$600,000,amatchingendowmentof$600,000fromTheDukeEndowment,plusafundingcommitmentfromArts&SciencestiedtoMAstudentenrollmentsinAAH&VS.Costsbeyondstaffingareprimarilyassociatedwithgraduatestudenttuitionandstipends,aswealreadyhavetheinfrastructureandstaffinplacetosupporttheprogram.

ThebudgetdescribedbelowassumesincomefromtheMAtrackinHistoricalandCulturalVisualizationatthelevelof3studentsperyearparticipatingina3semesterMAprogram,withthenumberofMAstudentsenrollingperyeargraduallyincreasingto6incomingstudentsbyFY21.ActualenrollmentsinthePhDprogramwoulddependuponprojectedrevenuesfromtheMAandothersources,suchasgrantsandotherexternalresources.Thisbudgetreflects1-0-1-0-1studentsenrollinginthePhDinitsfirstfiveyears.Wemayincreaseto1-2-1-2-1ifwehavesufficientfundingviatheMAandothersourcestosupportit.

StudentsalreadyenrolledinthetransitionalVisualandMediaStudiestrackoftheArt,ArtHistory&VisualStudiesPhDarereflectedinthenumbersbelow.TheyarebeingfundedoutofacombinationofMellonexpendablefundsandexistingcommitmentsfromA&S.TheywouldbecomepartoftheCMACcohort.

AdministrativestaffnotedinthebudgetarealreadyinplaceinAAHVS.Weareassumingano-cost-extension(NCE)ontheexistingMellonexpendablegrant.

ITStaffsupportisalsolistedaspartoftheMellonexpendablefunds.TransitionalITandwebsupporthavebeenmaintainedthroughlimitedcontractsandasharedappointment,whichrecentlyended.TheremainingexpendablefundsareallocatedtowebandITsupportasnoted,alsoassumingaNCE.WearecurrentlyexploringsharedITsupportmodelsacrossprogramsandlabstostretchtheseresourcesfurther.

Giventhesmallsizeofthecohort,weanticipatesomeofthegraduatestudents’incidentalandresearchexpensesbeingsupportedthroughTheDigitalHumanitiesInitiativeinFHI,andthroughInformationScience+Studiesendowments.Thisshouldoffsetanymodestshortfallsinthebudgetasnoted.AsstudentsbecomepartnersinFHILabs,BassConnectionsprojects,andotherinitiativessuchasData+intheHumanities,weanticipatepossibleTAshipsandothersupportopportunitiescomingtoourPhDstudentsaswell.

B. RESOURCESAVAILABLE

Staffing:• .25FTEContributiontowardsAAHVSandISS:Wecurrentlyaresupporting.25FTEof

administrativesupportviatheMellonexpendablefunds.ThisFTEgoestowardssupportoftheadministrativestaffinAAHVS,whichincludesaBusinessManagerandDGSA.Thesefundswillbeavailableforatleastthefirsttwoyearsoftheprogram.Wewillpursueinterdepartmentalcollaborationsforfurthergraduatesupport,aswellasinternaland

externalgrant-fundedteachingandresearchopportunitiesaroundspecificfacultyresearchwithintheLabsinSmith,FHI,InformationScience+Studies,andaroundcampusthroughBassConnectionsandotherinitiatives.Asnotedearlier,wealsoplantosupporttheGraduateCertificateinComputationalMedia,Arts&CulturesthroughtheexistingInformationScience+Studiesprogramasawayforinterestedstudentsfromotherprogramstoserveasalargercohort.ISSstaffsupport,whichisalsoprovidedinpartnershipwithAAHVS,willbeavailableforlab,curricular,andco-curricularsupport.

• 1FTEITSupport/WebDevelopment:FHITechnologyandAdministrativeStaffwillcontinuetoassistwiththeDigitalHumanitiesInitiativeandPhDLabactivities.IfthisprogramisapprovedtheirsupportwillextendtoCMACPhDactivitiesaswell.

BudgetScenarios

• ThemostconservativebudgetscenarioassumesnoadditionalrevenuesfromtheMAinComputationalMedia,andreliesuponresourcescomingfromMellon,MellonMatchingfundsfromDukeDevelopment,andfundsreservedfromthepriorVisualStudiesInitiativegrant.ThisscenarioreliesonMellonexpendablefundstosupportstaffingandotherprogramneedsduringthestartupphaseoftheformalPhD.TheseadministrativestaffarealreadyinplaceinAAHVS,asnotedabove.

• ThesecondbudgetscenarioassumesincomefromtheComputationalMediatrackintheAAHVSMAinHistoricalandCulturalVisualization(toberenamedtoDigitalArtHistory/ComputationalMediaonfinalapproval).Thissecondscenariobringsin1-2-1-2-1graduatestudentsoverafiveyearperiod.

Shouldweacquireadditionalfundstosupporttheprogramthroughexternalgrants,graduatelinescontributedthroughnewprogrammaticpartners,etc.,wewouldconsiderslightlyexpandingnumberofPhDstudentsadmittedinagivenyear,butweexpecttheprogramtoremainsmall,andmanageablewithexistingfaculty,staff,andinfrastructureresources.TheCMACGraduateCertificatewillservethewidercommunityofgraduatestudentsinterestedinparticipatinginouractivitiesfromwithinexistingdisciplinaryformationsandstructures.

PhysicalResources

ThephysicalfacilitiestosupporttheprogramareavailableinSmithWarehouse.IthasbeenfundamentalfromtheoutsetoftheVisualStudiesInitiativetocreateenvironmentsinwhichscholarswithdiversedisciplinarybackgroundsandtrainingcaninteractwitheachotherandwithstudents,suchasthecreationofexperimentalteachingandresearchspaces(4)adjacenttofacultyoffices,withteleconferencingcapabilities.

StartinginDecember2008,theVisualStudiesInitiativepioneeredanewtypeofexperimentalfacilitywherehumanists,engineersandscientists,theoristsandpractitioners,includingartists,arehousedtogethertofacilitatedailycommunicationandcollaboration.InAugust2013,anewfacilityofapproximately7,500squarefeethasbeenaddedasDukeUniversityin-kindcontributionstothethreemajorMellonGrants,awarded2007,2010and2013respectively.BothBay11andBay10(15,000sq.ft.)housefivenewstudentprojectspaces,newteachingfacilitieswith3Dprojectioncapabilities,facultyoffices,andeighton-site,fullyoperatinglaboratoriesorresearchprograms.TheselabresearchunitscoordinatetheteachingandresearchagendaofMedia,ArtandCulture.ThroughouttheirresidencyatDuke,ourdoctoralstudentswillbeexpectedtorotateeachsemesterinoneoftheeightresearchunits(fouroutofeight),andcollaborateonresearchprojectsduringtheirtimewiththem.

TheAAH&VS,AMI,ISS,andComputationalMedia,Arts&CulturesSmithWarehouseBays(9-12)arealreadyahubofinterdisciplinaryexchangeandmediaartsspaces.TheiroutstandingfacilitiesandimmediateproximitytoFHIBays(4-6),theMFAinExperimental&DocumentaryArts(Carpentry)andtheCenterforDocumentaryStudieswillnurturethePhDcohortthroughaclearsenseofcommunity,availablespacesintendedforcollaboration,anddirectaccesstoawiderangeofnewandtraditionaltechnologies.

SmithBay12includesafullyequipped,Mac-basedmultimedia-computingclassroom.Theroomalsoincludesoverheadprojection,anadditionalHDdisplayscreen,andaseminartable,makingitanidealspaceforcoursesinwhichcriticalanalysisandseminar-stylediscussionsarecombinedwithhands-onpracticesessionsandtutorials.Thisroomisalsoavailableafter-hourstostudentsenrolledinclassesandprogramshousedintheSmithWarehouse11-12space.Bay12alsohousesasecondtech-equippedseminarroom,alaptopcartwith14MacPromachines,alsoimagedwithmultimediasoftware(whichcanbeaddedtodependingonprogrammaticneed),andaproductionlab/groupworkspacecurrentlyusedbyISSstudentsandCMAC-affiliatesforproject-basedworkthatrequiresinstalleraccessandpersistentequipmentsetups.

TheDukeimmersiveVirtualEnvironment(DiVE)isheadedbyRegisKopper(PrattSchoolofEngineering)incollaborationwithourVisualization&InteractiveSystemsGroup.TheDiVEisafullyimmersiveandinteractive6-sidedCAVE-likesystem,fundedbyamajorresearchinstrumentgrantfromNSFin2004.LocatedinDuke’sPrattSchoolofEngineering,theDiVEisa3mx3mx3mstereoscopicrearprojectedroomwithheadandhandtrackingandrealtimecomputergraphics.Allsixsurfaces—thefourwalls,theceilingandthefloor—areusedasscreensontowhichcomputergraphicsaredisplayed.Itisafullyimmersiveroom;theindividual(researcher,educator,student,etc.)literallywalksintothevirtualworld,issurroundedbythedisplayandcaninteractwithvirtualobjectsintheworld.Stereoglassesprovidedepthperception,andahandheld“wand”controlsnavigationandinputtointotheworldformanipulatingvirtualobjects.TheDiVEisoneofnine6-sidedCAVE-likesystemintheworld.Thisuniqueresourceisidealforexperiencingarchitecture,sculpture,andculturalspacesatfullsize,one-to-onescale.ThroughtheuseoftheDiVE,studentsinComputationalMedia,Arts&Cultureswillgainadeeperunderstandingofmodelingreal-worldobjects.Issuessuchaslighting,scale,mass,andspacearereadilyapparentwhenoneisinsideabuildingascomparedtothe"God'sEye"viewtypicallygivenonadesktopsystem.Wealsoplantoexport3DrealizationstoourstudentteachingandprojectspaceinBay10,whichisequippedwithwall-to-wallscreensandadvanced3Dprojectioncapability.

TheLinkinPerkinsLibraryisanexpansiveandflexiblecampusfacilityofferinginnovativespatialandtechnologicalapproachestoteachingandlearning.Theleadingedgeteachingfacilityprovides6largeclassrooms,2seminarrooms,andanumberofsmallerbreakoutspacesforstudentstowork.Thefacilityallowsforvideo-conferencing,sessionrecording,teachingwithmultiplemonitors,andotherinnovativepedagogicaltechniques.ItalsocontainsaPCclass-roomwithspecializedsoftwareforCADdesignandcomputerprogramming.Thissoftwarebasecanbeadaptedaccordingtofaculty

Wehavetheresourcesweneedtolaunchtheprogram.Infact,wealreadyhavesixstudentsintheVisualandMediaStudiestrackoftheArt,ArtHistory&VisualStudieswhoself-identifyas“MediaArts+Sciences”students(theformernameofCMAC),andwhohavebeenwaitingforustoformalizetheirstatusinthenewprogram.Thesestudentshavebeensupportedthroughtransitionalandexpendablefundsthatarenowcomingtoanend.Weneedtheformalprograminplaceinordertoreleasetheendowmentfundsandadmitnewstudents,andtosustainthemomentumwehavebeenbuilding.

D. POTENTIALORACTUALOUTSIDEFUNDING

Asnotedabove,beyondtheexistingendowments,weanticipatesomefundingsupportfortheprogramthroughtuitionrevenuesfromtheComputationalMediatrackoftheAAHVSMA,whichwasapprovedbyECGFinDecember.WearepublicizingthisnewtrackattheCollegeArtAssociation,theACMSIGGRAPHConference,andatspecialistmeetings.WearealsoleveragingtheHASTACdigitalnetworkandothersocialmediaforatospreadthewordabouttheprogram.AstheMAprogramgainstractionweseeitavaluablesteppingstoneforundergraduates(includingourownatDuke)interestedindevelopingcomputationalmedia“chops”beforeapplyingtothePhDprograms,aswellasforpositionsinculturalheritage,marketing,anddigitalmediaconsulting.OfthethreestudentswhograduatedwiththeHistoricalandCulturalVisualizationMAinDecember,onehasbeenadmittedtoaPhDprogramindigitalmediaandeducation,onehasgoneontoanacademictechnologyconsultantroleataselectiveliberalartscollege,andoneisexploringopportunitiesinscholarlypublishing.Nowthatwehaveopeneduptheprogramtoawiderrangeofpotentialstudenttrajectories,andhavebeguntoenrichourrelationshiptothedatainitiativesinSSRIandtheInformationInitiative,weanticipatemorestudentstofollow.WehavealreadyseenanuptickofpotentialinterestfromapplicantsfromChinaintheMA,andseeinternationalstudentsasapotentiallyrichsourceofqualifiedapplicantsforboththeMAandthePhDprogramsgoingforward.

TheCMACleadersareactivelyworkingonstrategiesforfundraising,whichincludesconversationswithDevelopmentaroundDigitalHumanitiesfundingopportunities,whichmayultimatelyincludedirectsupportforthisprogram.Jenson,Szabo,andBellhavealreadybeguntheconversationaroundsolicitingdonorsupportforgraduatefellowshipsandaredeveloping“factsheets”tomaketheprogramanditsobjectiveslegibletothisaudience.

IndividualFacultyresearchprojectsintheLabsmayalsoprovidesupportopportunitiesforgraduatestudentsandrelatedactivitiesviaprojectbasedgrantsfromNEH,NSF,andothers.WearealsoworkingwiththeFranklinHumanitiesInstitutetodevelopnewgrantproposalstoOfficeoftheDigitalHumanitiesatNEHaroundspecificdigitalprojectsalreadyunderwayorindevelopmentbycorefacultymembers.ThegrouphasastrongtrackrecordwithNEH,aswellaswiththeGetty,Kressandotherfoundationsources.Inaddition,severalCMACcorefacultyarealreadyinvolvedinasubstantialNSFgranttiedtoretoolingtheDukeDIVE,whichinvolvesactiveuseofvirtualrealityforhistoricalandcultural,aswellasartisticprojects.Inaddition,theCMACfacultyhavereceivedanumberofinternalgrantsfromBassConnections,HumanitiesWritLarge,theDukeDigitalInitiative,andothersources,whichprovidesomesupportforgraduatestudentteachingandresearch.

AstudentinterestedinNarrativemightfocusontechniquesforanatomizingandrepresentingalargeseriesoftexts,andincreatingacustomannotationsystemfortaggingmotifs.HeorshemightspendtheirenergiesinlearningdatabasedesignandtheprinciplescreatingXMLfileswithTextEncodingInitiative(TEI)’smarkupinordertocreatemachine-readabletextsthatareinteroperablewithothertextcollectionsaroundtheworld.ThestudentwouldneedtolearnXMLandXLSTtodeveloptheirownarchive.SuchastudentwouldbenefitfromaPracticumExperienceintheLibraryworkingwithdigitaltextcollections.

AstudentinterestedinHistoricalAnalysismightwishtodoreconstructionsoflostarchitecture,orofsitesneverbuilt,andthencreatevirtualrealityexperiencesofthosereconstructionsforeducationandcritique.Heorshemighttakecoursesin3Dmodeling,anddevelopprogrammingskillsinC-SharpthroughcourseworkandworkshopsintheDIVEandonlineinordertocreatedlayeredannotationsofconstructedobjectsinavirtualrealitypresentation.SuchastudentcouldfollowtheIntrotoUnitycoursewithIntrotoVirtualRealitytolearnhowtoapplysuchwork.

AstudentinterestedinMediaArcheologymightbecomeinterestedinquestionsofpreservationandaccesstooriginaldigitalplatformsorforgottentechnologiesandfocusonthecreationofsimulators,virtualmachines,andexperimentalrecreations.Heorshemighttakecoursesorengageinself-studyinphysicalcomputingthatintroduceC++,orlearnsomeAssemblylanguage,orevenBASICinordertounderstandthatwhichtheystudy.ThatstudentmightalsobenefitfrombackgroundinJavaforweb-basedpresentationofresults.

AstudentinterestedinCulturalAnalyticsmightwanttoemphasizerealtimeandretrospectivedataanalysisofavarietyofdatafeeds.Heorshemightchoosetofocustheircomputationalmediaskillsdevelopmentinwebdesign,CSS,javascript,JSON,andPHP/MySQLdevelopment.InadditiontotakingISScourseinwebdevelopment,thestudentmightbenefitfromtakingtheCSIntroductiontoDatabaseSystemscourse,whichwouldinvolvetakingCS101plusanadditionalcourseaselectivesfirst.

Inaddition,studentsmustcompletetheGraduateSchoolTrainingonAcademicIntegrityandResponsibleConductofResearch.

B. LANGUAGEREQUIREMENTS

TheminimumrequirementforallstudentsenrolledinthePh.D.programisatleasttwolanguagesotherthanEnglish.

Thehumanlanguagerequirementswillbesimilartothoseinothergraduateprogramsinthehumanities.Theimpactofcomputationoncultureisaglobalphenomenon,withsitesofinnovationandimpacteverywhere.Studentsmightstudymediatheory,historyorcriticisminanoriginallanguage,forexample,oruselanguageskillstodelvedeeperintoathesisprojectfocusedonnon-Anglophonesubjectmatter,ortodoresearchbasedupon,orcommunicatewith,collaboratorsfromaroundtheworld.

Atleastonelanguagemustbeamachinelanguage.Studentsmaydemonstratefacilityuponentryintheprogram,orsometimebeforetheirPreliminaryExams.Programminglanguages(e.g.executablecodesuchasPython,C++,Java,PHP,Perl,assembly)areacceptableoptions,andinsomecases,markuplanguages,scripting,etc.mayqualifyaswell.EachstudentwillbeexpectedtoconsultwiththeDGSuponentry,andtoidentifyaMachineLanguageadvisorwhowillhelpguidedevelopmentandadministerthetest.

Languageabilitieswillbetestedbydepartmentallanguageexams.Fortraditionallanguages,theseexamsshallconsistoftwoparts:1)thetranslationofapassagewiththeuseofadictionary;and2)thetranslationofapassagewithouttheuseofadictionary.Thestudentwillbeexpectedtodemonstrateasoundgraspofthelanguageaswellasafamiliaritywithspecializedterminologyinthatlanguagerelevanttotheirresearch.

Formachinelanguages,theexamsmayconsistof1)a2-hourmediaarchaeological‘translation’andannotationofapieceofcode—withoutaccesstodocumentation—thatanalyzesthecode’slogicaland/orsymbolicflow,theoperationsofitsfunctions,andaccountsforitsoutputsand,ifapplicable,GUI;or,2)a2-daycodingassignmentwherethestudentdemonstratesproficiencyinaspecifiedcodingparadigm(machine,procedural,object-oriented)byproducinganannotated,executable,proof-of-conceptprototypethatmeetsorexceedsadefinedsetoffunctionalrequirements.Inallcases,thestudentwillbeexpectedtodemonstrateasoundgraspofthelanguage’sprogrammingparadigmaswellassufficientfamiliaritywiththecode’ssyntaxtoensurehis/herabilitytocarryoutindependent,highlevelworkinthatlanguage.

Asnotedintheearlierexamples,thespecificsoftheComputationalLanguageRequirementwillvarybasedontheinterestsandproficienciesofthestudentsinvolved.ManyofthePracticeCoursesexamplecoursesnotedabove.SomecomputationalcourserequirementswillbefulfilledinpartthroughparticipationinfoundationalundergraduatecoursesinComputerScience,Statistics,etc.,whileothersmaybefulfilledthroughfoundationalcoursesinInformationScience+Studies.Inmostcasesweanticipatesomeoftherequirementwillbemetthroughindividualfollow-onself-studyguidedbyafacultyorstaffmentor,eitherthroughindependentstudyorparticipationinaPracticumExperienceapplicationofthecomputationallanguage,orboth.ThePhDLabandtheISSCertificatewillbetwohubsaroundwhichweinviteparticipantsintostudygroups.WehavesuccessfullyorganizedtheseinthepastforbeginningiOSprogramming(intheFHIGreaterThanGamesLab)andinUnity3D(intheWiredlab).ThePhDLabcurrentlyhostsastudygroupofgradfellowswhoarelearninghowtoworkwithsensordataanalysis;theyarebringinginanexternalspeakerforfollow-onworkshopsaswell.TheLibraryalsodoesguestworkshopsindatavisualizationfortheAAHVSMA.andweencouragestudentsnowto

VII. COURSESANDLEARNINGOPPORTUNTIES

A. COMPUTATIONALMEDIA,ARTS&CULTURESPROSEMINAR

TheProseminarisateam-taughtcoursethatwillserveasanintroductoryoverviewofscholarshipatthenexusoftheoryandpractice.Initsinitialoffering,thecoursewillbetaughtbytwocorefaculty(onefromthetheoryside;onewithafocusonpractice)andisarequirementforallincomingCMACstudents.Subsequently,thecoursewillbetaughtbyteamsofcorefacultyonarotatingbasis.Thecoursemayincludevisitinglecturesbyothercoreandaffiliatedfaculty,onanadhocbasis.(Uponreviewaftertwoyears,thesteeringcommitteewillevaluatehowthe"team"approachhasworked,andwillconsiderotheroptions,includingasingleinstructorcoursewithasuiteofvisitinglecturersdrawnfromtheprogram'sfaculty.)

TheProseminarwillincludetheoreticalreadingsincomputationalmediatheory,design,andcritique,andwillfocusonhowthesereadingsinformandprovidecriticalcontextforpractice-basedmodesoflearningandproduction.TheProseminarwillcovervariousareasofcomputationalmediatheoryandculture,includingmediaarchaeology,dataandvisualization,computationandculture,databaseandnarrative,anddata-miningandbigdata.Theaimineachcasewillbetoexplorehowtheoreticalapproachestomediacanbothguideandchallengepracticalworkinmediadesign.

TheProseminarwillincludeanorientationtotherangeofopportunitiesavailableintheMediaLabsandothercomputationally-basedprojectsaroundcampus.Inthismodality,theProseminarwillserveasanintroductoryoverviewofthevariousMediaLabsinwhichCMACstudentsmaycarryoutworkinfulfillmentofthepracticumrequirement(seebelow).TheProseminarwillbeopentoallDukegraduatestudentsonaspace-availablebasis.InadditiontostudentsfromtheMAinComputationalMediaaswellascertificatestudentsinCMAC,weanticipateparticipationfromstudentsintheMFAinExperimentalandDocumentaryArtsandAMIandfromthegrowingcohortofstudentsacrosstheHumanitieswithinterestsinmedia.

B. THEPRACTICUMEXPERIENCE

OneofthekeydistinctionsofthisprogramliesinthePracticumexperiencesthatitprovidesandinthesubstantialcomputational,sociallyengaged,andmediapractice-baseddimensionsitaddstotheoreticalandcriticalcourseworkthatitoffers.TheprogrammaticmissionofComputationalMedia,Arts&Culturesistocombineinterdisciplinarytheoryandpracticethroughnewformsofscholarlyresearchandproduction,culminatinginatransdisciplinarydissertationproject.EachPracticumExperienceshouldyieldatangibleproduct.Thegoalsofthepracticaexperiencesareasfollows:

• Togainexposuretothevariouswaysinwhichcomputationalmedia,artsandcultureintersectapplytoexistingfacultyresearchwithintheprogramandacrosscampus

Weanticipatethattheextrateachingburdenwillbeminimalduetotherelativelylownumberofstudents(3-5)intheinitialsetof5-yearperiods.FacultyaffiliatedwiththeprogramwouldbeexpectedtoteachtheComputationalMedia,Arts&Culturesseminaronceevery3-4years,andtoeachofferaseminarthatwouldqualifyasacoreseminarevery2-3years,thoughtheymightwishtoteachsuchcoursesmorefrequently.

TheprimaryfacultyadvisorwouldbeselectedbythestudentfromtheComputationalMedia,Arts&Culturescorefaculty.Asthisisaninterdepartmental,interdisciplinaryprogram,additionalcommitteememberswouldcomefromAAH&VS,Literature,andotherunitsoncampus,asappropriate.DissertationsthatincludesignificantproductionorpracticecomponentsinareasofknowledgewheretheterminaldegreeisnotaPhD,mayincludeonecommitteememberwithaterminaldegreeorequivalentproductionexperiencefromhisorherarea.Thisisnecessarytoguaranteethehighestlevelofcompetenceandscholarlyqualityintheseareasasfaraseachparticularthesisprojectisconcerned.

Mostoftheseminarstaughtintheprogramalreadyexistinsomeform,andwouldbetaughtbythefacultyaspartoftheirnormalcourseloadinthosedepartments.Forexample,MarkHansenmayteachacourseonmediatheorywiththelistingdepartmentnotedasLiteraturethatwouldalsobeappropriateforComputationalMedia,Arts&Culturesstudents.BillSeamanmayteachacourseonemergentcomputationaspartofhisregularloadinAAH&VSthatwouldintereststudentsinComputationalMedia,Arts&Cultures.KatherineHaylesmayofferacourseindigitalliteratureaspartofherregularloadinLiteraturethatwouldinterestComputationalMedia,Arts&Culturesstudents,andsoon.SuchcourseswouldleverageteachingresourcessothatafullspectrumofgraduateseminarswouldbeofferedeachsemesterappropriateforComputationalMedia,Arts&Culturesstudentswithoutinitiallyrequiringanynewfacultyhires,althoughtheremaybethepossibilityforfuturehiresastheprogramgrowsanddevelops.

WeproposetosetupanindependentadmissionscommitteecomposedofcorefacultyaffiliatedwithComputationalMedia,Arts&Cultures.Eachyear,thecorefacultywillindicatetheiravailabilitytoacceptnewstudentsthroughtheComputationalMedia,Arts&Culturesprogramwebsite.WealreadyreceivenumerousapplicationsthoughArt,ArtHistory&VisualStudiesandLiteratureforgraduatestudentswhomightfittheprogram.WewillencourageotherHumanitiesProgramsto

forwardanypotentiallyrelevantstudentstous.GivenDuke’sstatureinternationally,wedonotanticipatehavingdifficultiesattractingqualifiedstudentstotheprogram.

B. ADVERTISING

WewilladvertisetheprogramthroughdirectmailingstoChairsinmediastudiesandotherrelevantprograms,posttoonlinelistsandsocialmedia,andplacetargetedadvertisementinjournalsandatconferencessuchasMLA,CollegeArt,AmericanStudies,SocietyforLiterature,ScienceandtheArts,SIGGRAPH,SIGGRAPHAsia,theInternationalCommunicationsAssociation,theAmericanHistoricalSociety,InternationalSocietyofElectronicArts(ISEA),HASTC,andtheConferenceonCollegeCompositionandCommunication(4cs).Individualfacultywillalsoadvertisewithintheirownresearchcommunities.

WewillalsodevelopawebsitethatshowcasestheworkalreadybeingdoneatDukeinthegeneralareaofComputationalMedia.AlloftheinterdisicplinaryLabsinSmithhavewebpresences;wewillcoordinatetheseunderoneonlineumbrellaforeaseofaccess,buildingofftheworkwehavebegunfortheComputationalMediaMAtrack.TheFHIisalsoalreadyputtingtogetheraDigitalHumanitiesInitiativewebsitethatshowcasesDHprojectsthatwecanleverageforpublicity.

C. DIVERSITYOFSTUDYBODYANDFACULTY

OurapproachtoComputationalMedia,Arts&Culturesisintentionallyinclusive.Weseediversityandinclusivenessasofcentralimportanceinthinkingthroughwhatcomputationmeanstomedia,arts,andculture.TheDigitalHumanitiesasanemergentfieldhasstruggledwithconcernsoverwhois“in”andwhois“out,”andwhetherworkthatfocusesonsocialjusticeandculturalinequalityratherthanonnovelcomputingtechniquesshouldcountasscholarshipinthefield.Wewanttoavoidthoselimitsinhowweconceptualizeouractivities.Becauseourinterestsareintheartisticandculturalpotentialandeffectsofcomputationalmedia,aswellasinthetheoriesandaffordancesofcomputation,wewelcomestudentswhowishtopursuethistypeofwork,alongsidethosewhoseinterestshaveamoreabstractandtheoreticalquality.ThisisinkeepingwithDuke’songoingcommitmentstomakingadifferenceintheworldandknowledgeintheservicetosociety.AswehavediscoveredthroughtheInformationScience+Studiesprogram’sundergraduatecurriculum,awiderrangeofstudentsaredrawntocontextsthatallowthemtoexplorecomputationthroughapplicationdesignanddevelopment.Manyoftheprojectsalreadyundertakenbyourfacultyreflectattentionto,andawarenessof,thesocialandculturalimpactof,andpotentialsforcomputation.Thesecommitmentswillbehighlightedonourwebsiteandinourpublicitymaterialsalongsidetheoretical,aesthetic,andtechnicalinterests,andwewillensurethattheindividualizednatureofthegraduateprogramopportunitiesaremadeapparent.

TheDigitalHumanitiesInitiativetheme,DH+,intentionallydrawsattentiontotheideaofglobalDHasacornerstoneofourwork.Inaddition,ourpartnershipwiththeJohnHopeFranklinHumanitiesInstituteoffersusuniqueopportunitiestoreachdiversecommunitieswithouroutreachandprogramming.TheDHIwithintheFHIisalreadyworkingwithDurham’sNCCU,thenation'sfirstpublicliberalartscollegefoundedforAfrican-Americans,onafacultytrainingworkshopthatwillincludeparticipantsfrombothinstitutionsworkingwithDurhamhistoryresourcesinordertodevelopdigitalpedagogyelementsinaglobalstudiesprogram.FHIjustapprovedfundingforaprojectfocusedonSoundStudiesintheGlobalSouththatinvolvesagraduatestudentcollaborator.Wecaneasilyimaginesuchaprojectinvolvingoneormoreofourgraduatestudents.Similarly,the

iiDData+initiativeisdevelopingahumanitiescomponentthatwillreflectasocialdimensionaswell.Asourcurriculumdescriptiondemonstrates,weareworkingactivelytoensurethatallstudentshavetheopportunitytofulfillthecodingandmediaproductionrequirementsoftheprogramthroughsummerworkshops,practicumtraining,andindividualizedstudy.Wewillhighlightthisinourrecruiting.

Wewouldliketocreateaunique,pro-activeinvitationorpersonalized,detailedinformationabouttheprogramthatissenttoorganizationsrepresentingprospectivestudentsfromvariousbackgrounds,andtoorganizeseveralopenhousedaysthroughouttheacademicyear.WeshallalsosolicitpracticaladvicefromGraduateAdmissionsonwaystoenrichourapplicantpool.

Becauseourprogramisinherentlycollaborativeandinterdisciplinary,weexpecttoseeagreatdealofintellectualdiversityamongstourstudentaswell.Weneedtobecriticallyawarethatdiversityincludesattractingstudentswithdiverseexperienceandtrainingbackgrounds(asmappedoutinthegraduatestudentprofiles),aswellthoseofdifferentphysicalabilities,religion,race,ethnicity,andgenders.Insum,weneedtoproactivelydevelopadiversestudentandfacultybodyinadditiontopayingattentiontodiversityindiscipline(s),intellectualoutlook,cognitivestyle,andpersonalitytypestoofferstudentsthebreadthofideasthatconstituteadynamicintellectualcommunity,whichComputationalMedia,Arts&Culturespromisestobe.

Oncestudentareintheprogram,weanticipateadvancedstudentsmentoringincomingstudentsthroughthePracticumExperiencesaswell,tohelpensuretheirsuccess.

Ourcurrentfacultylistisadiverseteam,butwecandomoretoenrichourcommunity.Astheprogramdevelops,wecanimageavarietyofcollaborationsbetweenourgraduatestudentsandfacultymembersaroundcampus,muchinthewaythattheMFAstudentshavebecomeinvolvedinvariousdocumentary-orientedprojects.Wewillencouragesuchexplorationinourstudents,andhavedesignedtheprogramsothatnovelgroupingsoffacultyandstudentsarepossible.AsmembersofthePhDLabstudentswillalsohavetheopportunitytodevelopcolloquia,invitespeakers,andforminterestgroupsaroundbroadthemesrelatedtocultureandcomputation,afreedomthatwehopewillalsofosterdiversityandinclusiveness.

X. CAREERDEVELOPMENTSERVICES

IncollaborationwiththeMFAinExperimentalandDocumentaryArtsandtheMAinHistoricalandCulturalVisualization,weplantosetupajointCareerAdviceandJobPlacementUnit,followingtheadviseofWesleyHogan,DirectorCenterforDocumentaryStudiesatDuke.Wearecurrentlyincontactwithfourprogramsthathaveexperiencewithjobplacementforgraduatesinrelatedprograms,namelyMassachusettsInstituteofTechnology(MediaArtsandSciences),NewYorkUniversity(TischSchooloftheArts),UCSantaBarbara(MediaArts&Technology)andtheUniversityofTexasatDallas(ArtsandTechnology).TomaketheCareerAdviseUnitmosteffective,weneedtointegrateitintoouroperationsinBay11-Bay10,SmithWarehouse,incloseproximitytothestudentprojectspaces,thefacultyofficesandtheoperatinglabs.

WeobviouslydonotneedtoreplicatewhatalreadyexistsatDuke,forcareercounselingisanongoingserviceavailabletoallDukegraduatestudentsviaDukeStudentAffairs(http://studentaffairs.duke.edu/career/career-services).Theyarefamiliarwithgraduatestudentswith“uniqueDukebackgrounds”andhelpthempreparefuturecareergoalsortoprepareforanotherdegreeprogram.However,wearecommittedtoestablishourownOfficeofCareerServicestohelpourstudentsandalumnitoidentifyjobsandinternships.

Butasmentionedabove,weseektosetupacollaborativestructurethatservesseveralunits,comparabletoourbusinesscenter,whichisnowfullyoperational.Weareintheprocessdevelopingaweb-basedsystemtomakeadvisingappointments,viewjobandinternshiplistings,andfindformsforProfessionalDevelopmentFundsandInternshipApprovalanddownloadourhandoutsandpresentationsonprofessionalskillsandCMACcareers.WealsoplantohaveadedicatedadviserinplaceinourjointlygovernedOfficeofCareerServicesandarecommittedtohelpourgraduatestudentswithgeneralcareerplanning,networkingadvice,andresumeandcoverletterreview.

XI. STUDENTSUPPORTSERVICES

Becausetheprogramissosmall,andisassociatedwithtwoexistingPhDprograms,weanticipatestudentswillbeabletotakeadvantageofthealready-existingsupportservicesinAAHVSandLiterature.AswithourexistinginternationalPhDandMAstudents,wewillworkcloselywiththeVisaoffice,theWritingProgram,andotherresourcesoncampusasneeded.

Becauseweanticipatethatstudentsintheprogramwillcomefromarangeofbackgrounds,wewillinstitutewrittenmid-termevaluationswithallfacultyinstructorsintheprogramtoidentifyareasneedingattention.Weanticipatesomestudentsmayneedadditionalhelpwithtechnicalskillsdevelopment,andcandirectthemtowardsavailablestafffortraining.Dukehasanunusuallyrichsetofresourcesbothinpersonandonline(forexample,Lynda.com)thatcanbebeneficialintheseareas.Inaddition,wehavespokenwithComputerScienceaboutthefeasibilityofhavinggraduatestudentsenrollinundergraduatecourses.Theyhaveindicatedthisispossibleonaspace-availablebasis.

Intermsofcommunitydevelopment,weexpectthattheFranklinHumanitiesInstitute,asasiteofDigitalHumanitiescollaborationoncampus,willbecomeahometothesestudents,alongwiththeCMACCertificatestudents.WewillactivelyensurethatthesestudentsareintegratedintotheAAHVSandLiteraturelistervsandcommunitygatheringsaswell.

BecauseweanticipategradswillworkcloselyinSmith,FHI,andBassConnectionsprojects,wewillworkcloselywiththoseinitiativestodevelopandpresentopportunitiestograduatestudentsinthe

programthroughtheDigitalHumanitiesInitiativeandCMACmailinglists,websites,andothercommunicationsstructures.

XII. PROGRAMASSESSMENT

Concerningassessment,wehavesetupaComputationalMedia,Arts&CulturesAssessmentCommittee,whichhasseveralfacultyamongitsmembershipwithextensiveDUSandDGSexperience.Thechargeofthiscommitteeistomapinasystematicmannerlearningoutcomesaswellastopayattentiontotheexperiencesthatleadtothoseoutcomes.Heretoo,weshallseekadvicefromourExecutiveCommitteeandBoardofAdvisors.Informationaboutoutcomesisofhighimportance;wherestudents"endup"mattersgreatly,soweneedtopayattentiontofutureplacementscenarios.Itisclearthattoimproveoutcomes,weneedtoknowaboutstudentexperiencesespeciallythosegainedfromthepro-seminarsandlabrotations,thecurricula,teaching,andkindofstudent(andfaculty)engagementthatleadstoparticularoutcomes.Weenvisiontoconductatleastonedetailedinterviewpersemester,complementedbyanexitinterviewuponcompletionoftheresidence.Weplantousethesamemetricssemesteraftersemesterandsystematicallycollectexamplesofstudentperformance,conformtoestablishedDukeArts&Sciencespractices.Thepointistomonitorprogresstowardintendedgoalsinaspiritofcontinuousimprovement.Throughoutthismonitoringprocedure,theassessmentprocessitselfshouldbeevaluatedandrefinedinlightofemerginginsights.

ForthePhD,indirectassessmentviasomemechanismdesignedtoassesswhattheyareseekingfromtheprogramandadministeredattheoutset(dotheywanttoacquiretheoreticalskillsandatheoreticalresearchprogram,etc.?,dotheywanttobringapracticaldimensiontotheirscholarlyworkandendeavors,etc.?)andthenagainatthepointofcompletionofthedissertationproject(andpossiblyattheexamstageaswell).

Directmeasurement:evaluationoftheirperformanceintherequiredcorecourseinmedia,intheirqualifyingexamsandintheirdissertation.Thisevaluationcanbecorrelatedwiththeiraimsasdiscoveredthroughindirectevaluation.

Keymetricsforprogrameffectivenesswillinclude:

• qualityofstudentprojectsasdeterminedbyreviewsfromfacultyonthehumanities,engineeringandsciencessidesoftheprogram;

• selectionofcurrentandgraduateworkforscholarlytalks,exhibitions,grants,andpublications;

• jobplacementandgraduateadmissionsdata(forMAstudentspursuingfuturework);• studentfeedbackabouttheprogramasdeterminedthroughperiodicfocusgroups,

anonymizedfeedback,andexitinterviews.

Thoughatthisstage,bothassessmentandplacementremainsomewhathypothetical,themainobjectivehereistoimprovethewholeofthestudent’slearningaswellastoimprovetheteachingandresearchmissionoftheconstitutingprogramsandlabs.
