Winter Olympic Games are the biggest international competitions in winter sports that are held once every four years under the auspices of the International Olympic Committee. Winter Olympic Games were started in 1924, Chamonix France as a supplement to the summer Games.

Nikolay Aleksandrovich Panin-Kolomenkin was a Russian figure skater. He won the gold medal in

special figures in the 1908 Summer Olympics. Panin was Russia's first

Olympic champion.

But before Chamonix, some winter sports were included in the Summer Olympic Games. Figure skating and ice hockey had already made an appearance at the Games, inLondon in 1908 for the first time, and in Antwerp in 1920 for the second.

Facts from historyOn the programme of the Chamonix Games in

1924 were six sports with 16 events - military patrol (the precursor of biathlon), bobsleigh, curling, ice hockey, skating and skiing.

From Chamonix 1924 to Sochi 2014 there are 90 years and 22 editions of the Winter Games.

From 1924 to 1992, the Winter Olympic Games were held in the same years as the Summer Olympics.

From Charmonix1924 to Sochi 2014

Since 1994, the Winter Olympics are held with a shift of 2 years from the Summer Olympic Games.

While delegations from 16 European countries and North America with 258 competitors (11 women among them) were present at the celebration in Chamonix, about 6000 athletes and team members (with record number of women taking part) of more than 80 National Olympic Committees are expected in Sochi.

- the Olympic Winter Games were held in 1924 in Chamonix, France;

- the Olympic flag was raised in 1928 in St. Moritz, Swiss;

- the formal opening and closing ceremonies were held in 1932 in Lake Placid, the USA; the first emblem was introduced;

- the Olympic flame was lit at the beginning ceremony in 1936 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany;

- the Olympic torch was carried right around the country in 1952 in Oslo, Norway;

- the Soviet Olympic team took part in 1956 in Cortina d`Ampezzo, Italy and had a great success;

- the Olympic hymn was sung at the opening ceremony in 1960 in Squaw Valley, the USA.

It was for the first time that…

- 12 new sports events make their debut on the Olympic programme in Sochi in 2014;

- the total number of sporting events and medal sets in Sochi is 98.

- cities St. Moritz (1928, 1948), Innsbruck (1964, 1976), Lake Placid (1932,1980) have hosted two Winter Olympics;

- the USA have hosted four Winter Olympics: (1932, 1960, 1980, 2002);

- France have hosted three Winter Olympics: (1924, 1968, 1992);

- Norway ( 1952, 1994), Italy ( 1956, 2006), Japan (1972, 1998) and Canada ( 1988, 2010) have hosted two Winter Olympics;

- Russia hosts the XXII Winter Olympic Games for the first time in history since the XXII Summer Olympics in Moscow (1980).
