DRILL SAFETY

The Portable Hand Drill

video

• Remove all strings or long jewellery that could get caught in the drill

• Tie back long hair

• Clamp your material to the stage (table) to prevent losing control of the stock or it spinning out of control should the bit get caught.

Make sure the chuck key is off of the drill press before you start the machine

• Place the drill or bit in the chuck straight and tighten it securely

• Feed the drill or bit smoothly into the stock.

• When the hole is deep, withdraw it often to clear the shavings.

• Center punch materials before starting to drill so the screw doesn’t skip or slide

• Avoid drilling into the table or the vice by using a piece of scrap wood under your stock & in line with the hole in the center of the stage

• Check the speed. Use a slow speed for large holes and a faster speed for smaller holes.

• Make sure your drill is set to run in the proper direction (Forward or reverse).

• Lightly press the drill to see which direction the bit is moving

• Keep your fingers at least 10 cm away from the rotating tool.
