Also known as:

• Cold Formed Steel

• Light Steel Framing

• Light Gauge Steel Framing

• Loadbearing SFS

Advantages of LGS

05/02/2019Engineers Ireland Cork 18

• LGS has high strength to weight ratio

• Does not shrink or creep.

• Flexibility – can be used with steel joist floor or concrete composite deck floor

options.

• Can be designed to accommodate HRS beams and columns to deal with the

transfer of heavy loads.

• Lightweight system –can reduce the dead weight loading when built from a

transfer slab by up to 40%, up to 25% with Concrete Slabs

• Can accommodate multi level concrete slabs

• Currently systems certified up to 10 stories or 30m available in Ireland

Other Design Considerations

NZEB will apply to All New Buildings

05/02/2019Engineers Ireland Cork 76

• 31st December 2020 – All new buildings Nearly Zero Energy

Building.

• 31st December 2018 – All buildings acquired by public bodies

Nearly Zero Energy Building.

• All buildings completed after these dates must have this

requirement.

• A certificate of compliance with Building regulations could

not be signed on 1st January 2021, unless it meets the NZEB

standard, and the building could not be occupied.

Energy efficiency:Fabric first approach

• Important to highlight the Fabric-First approach

• Particularly from a Thermal Bridging perspective

• Dynamic Simulation Modelling

79

Fire Testing:Loaded Walls

• Loaded walls tested to EN 1365-1/BS 476-21:1987

• Internal load bearing walls and external load bearing walls

• NB

• Adequate detailing of services in walls

• The importance of load

80

Fire testing:Loaded Floors EN 1365-2

STRUCTURAL FLOORS/COMPARTMENT

FLOORS

VERTICAL PENETRATIONS ALLOWED FROM CEILING TO FLOOR PROVIDED IT IS ADEQUATLEY FIRE STOPPED WITH APPROPRIATE TESTED PRODUCT

BS 8414 Testing on Building over 18 meters

• If your system is not minimum class A2 then you must have a system specific test

82

• Critically important to carry out lab testing at product development stage.

• Walls and Floors

• Airborne Sound:

• Impact sound

• Our policy is to design Offsite products for residential use that can achieve a minimum of 5dB better than building regulations on site during post completion testing.

83

Acoustic performance of systems and elements

Weather Testing of External Cladding

• CWCT Standard for systemised building Envelopes

• Air permeability

• Wind resistance

• Water penetration

• Water resistance

• Static test method

• Dynamic test method
