Step 2: Cut Background FabricFor most efficient use of the fabric, the fabric pieces for thefoundations are pre-cut. Follow the instructions and illus-trations below.
Background 1 (B1). Cut six stripsmeasuring 4¾" x WOF. From thestrips, cut a total of 96 pieces measuring2½" x 4¾". Next cut each piece on thediagonal as shown, making 192 B1 pieces.
Background 2 (B2). Cut eight stripsmeasuring 6" x WOF. From the strips, cut a total of 96 pieces measuring3" x 6". Next cut each piece on thediagonal as shown, making 192 B2 pieces.
Background 3 (B3). Cut twelve stripsmeasuring 3" x WOF. From thestrips, cut a total of 96 pieces measuring3" x 5". Next cut each piece on thediagonal as shown, making 192 B3 pieces.
Border. There are five different size pieces (A-E) cut for theborders. Cut six strips 5" x WOF then sub-cut them as follows:• Strips 1 & 2: From each, cut two 14½" (A) and one 107/8" (E)• Strips 3 & 4: From each, cut two 14½" (A) and one 85/8" (B)• Strip 5: Cut two 14½" (A) and one 41/8" (D)• Strip 6: Cut two 153/8" (C)
Binding. Cut seven strips your preferred binding width (up to2½") x WOF.
Step 3: Cut the Accent FabricThe accent fabric is used in the blocks and the border. Cut asfollows:• Blocks - Cut one strip at 1½" x WOF, then cut twelve 1½"
squares from it. Next, cut ten strips at 1" x WOF; fromthese strips, cut a total of forty-eight pieces eachmeasuring 7¼" long.
• Border - Cut two strips measuring 1" x WOF, then cut into14 pieces each 5" long.
Step 4: Prepare the Fabric SquaresEach Charm Pack includes 150 different fabrics, with Fabric#1 being the topmost square. Keeping track of the fabrics isvery important! Cut out the fabric labels on pages 5-6 and pinto the corresponding fabric from the sets. (Thus, the label for
Pattern assumes basic quiltmaking and foundation-piecing knowledge and is suitable for the confident beginner and beyond.Read the entire pattern before beginning. All seam allowances are ¼". Press seams after sewing.WOF = width of fabric (assumes 40"); LOF = length of fabric.
B2
Step 5: Make the BlocksThere are 24 different blocks (1-24) in the quilt, and twocopies of each are required. Each block is made from a regularand a reversed foundation, separated by an accent fabric strip.
To avoid fabric confusion, work on a single block at a time, completing both copies before moving on to the next.
Block 1Mark the Foundations. Collect two regular and two reversedfoundations. Referring to the Color Guide and taking carefulnote of the fabric order, mark the appropriate fabric numberon each section of each foundation. (The background fabricpatches are already marked on the foundations.)
As in the illustration below, you will note that the foundationsare the mirror image of the final block; this is because thefabric is sewn to the opposite side of the paper. (If you havenot foundation pieced before, you just have to trust us on this!)

Foundation Piecing General Instructions
The foundations are pre-printed with labels for each of thebackground sections. Before beginning, be sure tohandwrite the fabric numbers for the colored pieces ontoeach section of the foundations.
You can begin piecing at either end of each foundation. Allpatches are slightly oversized and must be trimmed asinstructed below before sewing on the next patch.
Pin a B1 piece over the first area on a foundation, wrongside of the fabric against the unprinted side of the paper. The fabric should cover the finished area and the indicatedseam allowance, plus extend at least ¼" beyond the solidline separating it from the next section. With the paper ontop, fold the foundation back along the solid line and trimthe fabric ¼" beyond the fold.
Next, lay the fabric piece for the adjacent area on the firstpatch, right sides together, aligning the raw edges near thesolid line. Pin in place if necessary. Double-check to makesure that the top patch will completely cover the next areawhen sewn. Adjust if necessary.
Turn the foundation over and, using a short stitch length, sew through all layers along the line on the printed side ofthe foundation. (A short stitch length makes it easier toremove the paper later.)
Flip the fabric right side up and press the seam. With thepaper on top, fold the foundation back along the solid linethat marks the next seam line. Trim the fabric ¼" beyond thefold. Add the next patch.
Repeat this process until the foundation is complete. Aftercompleting a foundation, press well and trim the outsideedge of the fabric and foundation along the outer solidlines of the foundation. Do not remove the paper.
Blocks 2-24Using the same process as Block 1, and working on one blockat a time, make two each of Blocks 2-24.
Step 6: Make the UnitsFour blocks plus a 1½" accent square are sewn together tomake a unit. Each unit uses different blocks, and care mustbe taken to ensure that the blocks are rotated correctly.
Referring to the Unit & Quilt Assembly diagram on page 4 forthe block numbers and orientation, follow the instructionsbelow to make a unit.
Repeat to make a total of 12 units. Units measure 15" squareincluding seam allowances.

Sewing a Unit Using a Partial Seam
Using a partial seam allows the unit to be made without aninset seam.
Tester’s Tip: To improve accuracy, before sewing each seam, tear away the paper foundation from that area.

Pre-Cut the Fabric Squares.Cut each square used in the blockinto two pieces along the diagonal lineas shown. (Because you are cuttingtwo of each fabric, you will have fourpieces of each fabric.)
Sew the Foundations. Following the Foundation PiecingGeneral Instructions (opposite), make the two regular and tworeversed foundations for Block 1.
Complete Block 1. Complete a block by sewing a 7¼" accentstrip to the colored-fabric side of a regular and reversed foun-dation (see Block 1 illustration on page 1). Press seamstoward the accent strip. Write the block number on the foun-dation paper! Repeat to make a total of two. Blocks measure8¼" x 7¼" including seam allowances.
Sew A to the accent square 1 , starting at the center of theaccent square and sewing to the edge, leaving most of thelower edge of A and half of the top of the accent square free. This is the partial seam.
Next, sew B to the unit just made, using a regular seam 2 ;this seam spans the full block and the accent square. Sew Cto the unit just made, also using a regular, full-length seam 3 .
Now, sew D to the unit just made, using a regular, full-lengthseam 4 , folding A out of the way.
Lastly, complete the unit by sewing 5 , which extends from theleft edge of A to the beginning of the partial seam 1 .

Step 8: Make & Add the BordersSew the border rectangles and 5" accent strips together asshown below. Press the seam allowances toward therectangles.
Top & Bottom Borders - Make two.
Left & Right Borders - Make two.
With the quilt on a design surface, place the borders aroundthe quilt, orienting them as shown below. When the bordersare in the correct positions, the accent strips in each borderwill line up with an accent strip in the quilt top.
Pin, then sew the side borders to the quilt, butting the accentstrip seams together and easing in any fullness as required.(If you have pressed the seams as instructed, the accent stripseams should nest together.) Lastly, pin and sew the top andbottom borders to the quilt in the same fashion.

Step 7: Assemble the QuiltReferring to the Unit & Quilt Assembly diagram on page 4,sew the units together to make Row 1 and Row 2; sew the tworows together as illustrated to make the top half. Repeat tomake the bottom half. Rotate the bottom half as illustrated inthe Unit & Quilt Assembly diagram, then sew the two halvestogether. (Quilt measures 44" x 58½".)
Step 9: Quilt & BindRemove the paper foundations.
Layer the project as follows: backing (wrong side up), batting, quilt top (right side up). Baste the layers together. Quilt asdesired.
When the quilting is completed, trim the backing and battingeven with the edges of the quilt top.
Bind the quilt using the reserved strips and your favoritemethod.

Unit & Quilt AssemblyThe top half of the diagram shows the 24 units that make up the quilt. (The four-block units are sepa-rated with heavy white lines.) Each unit has four blocks which pinwheel around the small accentsquare at the center. Take careful note of the rotation of each block: the top of each block is markedwith a white dot in the illustration above.
The two halves of the quilt are identical. The bottom half is rotated 180° (see the block marked withan asterisk) before being sewn to the top.
