Kimberly Albrecht, jazz singer, and Dr. Bill Wittert, pianist, have joined together to form Jazz Pizazz, a musical duo featuring classics from the American songbook and Broadway musical theater.

Kimberly Albrecht enjoys singing a wide range of styles from jazz to classical, and has performed in the Chicago area for over 30 years. Her jazz career began at the University of Michigan Jazz Workshop, and then with the Stu Hirsch Society Orchestra, and has recently extended into jazz worship! Kimberly is currently a featured vocalist with Bravissimo Vocal Ensemble, Lutheran Church of the Atonement, and Barrington Village Singers. She has recently performed, produced and directed musical theater and opera highlights for the (former) Elgin Opera.

Dr. Bill Wittert comes from a long line of Chicago musicians, dating back to the 1920s, when his grandmother played piano for silent movies, and his father sang with Maurice Chevalier at the Chicago Theater. A distant cousin was Jake Guzik of the Al Capone gang, but, alas, there are few calls for pianists to perform in speakeasies! Bill has performed on keyboards since childhood, studied jazz with Alan Swain Studios and currently studies with Chicago jazz pianist Drew Scalercio. Bill regularly has performed at resorts and clubs for almost 40 years, and can even be found entertaining shoppers at the piano at Von Maur Department Store in Glenview, Illinois. In his “other life,” Dr. Bill Wittert served for 28 years as a North Shore pediatrician.

Turf News On The Course with Scott Hillyard

How can August already be here? The older I get the faster time goes. This season has been unusually mild to this point which has minimized turfgrass stress, though the extended periods of humidity has given us some fits. Member/Guest and the Illinois Open are behind us, and Club Championship is on the horizon. June, July, and August are typically about golf and conditioning. August specifically is about finishing strong during the final stretch of summer. Grass is usually a little tired and looking forward to the cooler nights of fall. With the talk of fall, it becomes time to think of aerification. We are scheduled for greens aerification on Tuesday, September 8th. We will likely complete nine holes in their entirety on Tuesday, and complete the other nine holes on Wednesday. Barring a weather disaster, nine holes will be open on Wednesday. This is an ideal

time to aerify greens. We still have soil temperatures to promote rapid healing and temperatures are typically warm enough to favor bentgrass growth. Aerification occurring later tips the balance to favor Poa annua growth, something we do not want. With favorable weather, greens should be recovered in two weeks.Fall will also bring the continued aerification of fairways, approaches, and tees. Our program with regards to tees and approaches is relatively simple. We will poke a solid hole to promote gas exchange, and sand topdress several times during the fall stretch. This program has allowed us to see positive gains in playability, especially in approaches. This season they have played tighter and firmer and I expect that progress only to continue. In the fairways, we will continue to utilize the Vertiquake. While those lines we create may not be ideal, they have allowed us to drain better, be more efficient with applications of irrigation, and provide firmer conditions on a daily basis. Aerification is a less than ideal process as it pertains to its short term impact on play, but continued implementation of these practices will provide the most playable surfaces over the long term.

We hope this issue finds you and your family well! The month of August is one of my favorite months of the year. The time for one last family vacation, one last trip to the lake and one more opportunity to take advantage of Chicago’s summer weather. August also brings with it the ‘dog days of summer’ and we’re all hopeful the Cubbies will be in contention for a playoff berth (sorry White Sox fans). The Chicago Bears will be back in action as training camp gets under way and another college football season kicks off at the end of the month. Lastly and most important, we want to welcome 11 new members to the club. We look forward to seeing everyone soon!

Trivia Question of the Month – The month of August brings with it training camp for the Chicago Bears. What town and university hosts the Chicago Bears training camp?

For the answer to the monthly trivia question contact me at [email protected]

*Members contacting me with the correct answer, will be entered into a random drawing for a complimentary appetizer at your next dining at the club. The winner will be announced in next month’s newsletter. Good Luck!

Golf News with Joe Titus

Every once in a while I come across a rule multiple times while playing with members. Below is one such rule.Dropping the ball: There are multiple circumstances on the golf course when a golfer is allowed to take a drop; with or without penalty. First, let’s define nearest point of relief. Definition of nearest point of relief is the reference point for taking relief without penalty from interference by an immovable obstructionIn other words, it is the point on the course nearest to where the ball lies not nearer the hole and with no interference from a manmade object, abnormal ground condition or a wrong putting green. Definition of Free ReliefTaking relief without penalty when your ball lies on or near a manmade immovable obstruction (cart paths, drains, sprinkler heads) that would impede your stance or swing.

Procedure:Take your stance where the obstruction no longer interferes with your stance or swing. From that point, you are allowed one club length no closer to the hole. Taking Relief with PenaltyA ball dropped for relief from a lateral hazard, water hazard, or unplayable lie with a 1 stroke penalty may be dropped;Procedure:1. Two (2) Club Lengths no closer to the hole from point

your ball last crossed the margin of the hazard.2. Bring ball back nearest the original spot last played.3. Drop behind the hazard keeping the line of the ball and the hole.

ETIQUETTEAs we move into Club Championship month and we all start to gear up for those competitions we mainly focus on our games. During this time, let’s not lose sight of the etiquette side of golf. Here are a few items to keep in the forefront of your mind:• Fix all ball marks and rake all bunkers• Fill all divots with the proper mix • Keep carts on the paths around greens and tee boxes• Please do not allow children to drive carts• Keep pull carts off tee boxes and greens/fringes• Play ready golf, especially if some of your group rides

and some walk• Don’t be afraid to ask groups if you can play through if

you’re faster• Keep shirts tucked in pants around the clubhouse
