BE SEEN. BE HEARD.
Who exactly is the “typical” Mason student? There isn’t one. There are almost 23,000 undergraduate
students, from all 50 states and 130 countries.
BE YOU.
Our campus is a mosaic of humanity, where a multitude of different people, languages, and perspectives come together. And while we may not always
share the same opinion, we embrace a mutual respect for different points of view.
Mason is all about self-expression and discovering what gets your intellectual
and creative juices flowing. Track the migration of sea turtles, learn Mandarin, build a robot, start a green business, observe the life cycle of a star, outsmart
cyber terrorists, or just have a spontaneous game of Frisbee on the Quad.
It’s all here. You just have to own it.
Engineering students Viet Tran and Seth Robertson
invented a new way to douse a fire with sound, not
water. Their fire extinguisher uses low-frequency
sound waves, like the thump-thump bass in hip-hop,
to extinguish flames. It started as a class project that
was quickly picked up by the media, including an
appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.
A patent is in the works. You might say these guys
are on fire.
If you don’t see it, create it.

HERE, LIFE IS GOOD.Our beautiful 670-acre suburban campus provides you with everything you could
possibly desire to create your ultimate college experience. At Mason, you’ll enjoy
modern classrooms, state-of-the-art labs, and spacious student centers where
you can study or hang out with friends. There are also lots of popular dining
options, including a 24-hour Starbucks to help get you through finals.
All freshmen are required to live on campus, so there’s always plenty to do.
Attend an on-campus concert or play, or catch a movie in the Johnson Center
Cinema (it’s free and so is the popcorn). Our residential community includes
newly renovated residence halls, free laundry, and comfortable lounge areas
where you can study or just relax with your new friends.
With more than 350 student organizations, it’s easy to find other Patriots who share your interests, whether it’s swing dance, table tennis, or underwater
hockey. Or go Greek with one of our 38 fraternities and sororities.

One of the many advantages of being close to D.C. is the number
of internship possibilities you have access to. And we’re not just
talking about on Capitol Hill.
Yes, there is the Department of Justice, CIA, and the Washington Post. But there are also hundreds of nonprofits, think tanks, tech companies, museums, and performing arts centers where you
can apply your classroom knowledge, test out a possible career choice, and make valuable contacts. In fact, many students often complete more than one internship during their time at Mason.

COUNTDOWN TO A CAREER.Suzy Hewitt, a Mason Honors College student majoring in astronomy, landed an enviable internship at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, part of the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. Leading hands-on learning sessions on space, she hopes to bring people closer to the solar system and beyond. “The study of space doesn’t just affect scientists or one country; it’s a global interest that’s able to be shared by people of all backgrounds,” says Suzy.
There's excellence. And then there's exceptional.Mason’s Honors College attracts our most academically talented applicants and offers distinct advantages such as priority registration and access to some of Mason’s most renowned faculty.

TO HIRE EDUCATION.
One of the primary reasons to go to college—besides the epic good times you’ll post
and the lifelong friends you’ll make—is to get an education that prepares you for a successful life—personal and professional.
Students have access to our University Career Services Office, where they can get industry-based career advice, help securing an internship, a plan for finding employment after graduation, and access to a strong professional network.
In other words, you don’t have to go far… to go far.
+ Nearly 700 companies interviewed students on campus last year.

STUDENT PROFILE: JUNIOR
STUDENT PROFILE: JUNIOR
Katherine came to Mason with no idea what she
wanted to do with her life. But that all changed
when she volunteered with the Office of Leadership
Education and Development and had the opportu-
nity to work with special-needs students at a nearby
middle school. She quickly realized she needed
them as much as they needed her. “It really was a
true moment where I realized what my purpose is,”
she says. After she graduates, she plans on a career
in special education and in advocating for students
with disabilities.
There are moments when Christopher, a first-
generation college student, just has to point out
to friends that rare bird in a tree or that flowering
plant. “It’s true,” he says, laughing. “Ecologists
are geeky in that way.” His inquisitive nature led
him to pursue biology as an Honors College
student at Mason. What followed was a pres-
tigious Udall Scholarship, which is awarded
to students committed to environmental and
Native American issues.

MASON TRADITIONS.
50 years of
The Mason Nation wouldn’t be complete without
our traditions.
Mason Day—established in 1965—is probably our
biggest and most popular, with live music, rides,
food, and more. During February, we celebrate
Homecoming with Patriot basketball. Green and gold are out in full force as Doc Nix and the Green
Machine pump up the crowd.
There’s also our yearly re-painting of the Spirit Row
benches, where student organizations compete
for the honor of claiming a bench and making it their own.
And let’s not forget George Mason, the statue.
Often decked out in Mason gear, he’s in more selfies than anyone else on campus. Don’t forget to rub his toe for good luck before exams!
These are just a few of the many Mason
traditions that help define who we are.
