It shouldn’t surprise anybody that my thoughts for this space are the words of a song. My friends and I mourned the passing of one of the greatest duo’s in music history, Simon and Garfunkel, back in that long-ago day. I couldn’t believe they weren’t going to sing together anymore.
It was 1973 when Art broke his first solo album, and it was pre-dictably a hit. The most famous song lifted from it was “All I Know.” They weren’t Christians, and this isn’t a sacred song. Yet its words, written by Jimmy Webb, have been on my mind a lot this week:
When the singer's gone, Let the song go on, It's a fine line between the darkness and the dawn
They say in the darkest night, there's a light beyond But the ending always comes at last
Endings always come too fast They come too fast, but they pass to slow I love you and that's all I know
I could have focused, I suppose, on the words of the wise man, “To every thing there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven….” (Eccl. 3:1) But this line fits my thinking so well…the endings always come….too fast. Our days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle, (Job 7:6) but not without hope.
I have hope when I think of your future and mine. I have hope in God who “doeth all things well.” I have hope in the Blessed Hope – the glorious appearing of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
I have hope in the faithfulness of God:
Philippians 1:6 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:
I love you, Sharon Baptist Church. That’s all I know.
