Paul concluded his letter to the church at Ephesus with a challenge: Ephesians 6:10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

There is nothing remarkable in the words themselves – strength, power, and might. Even their arrangement does nothing to call for special at-tention. It is noteworthy that their source and substance are particularly identified: “in the Lord.”

The Ephesians needed strength beyond their own, and so do we. The Old Testament prophet Habakkuk once wrote a simple song:

Habakkuk 3:17 Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labor of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: 18 Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation. 19 The LORD God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds’ feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places. To the chief singer on my stringed instruments.

Habbakkuk’s song focuses on a difficult season. Figs, grapes, and olives were all what we would think of as cash crops. While they consumed them personally, they were sold to provide income for the people. If these crops did not produce, it was a promise of financial calamity.

Then he described their “meat” crops – those that indeed served as their primary staple foods. The fields would yield no grain and their flocks and herds would be lost. No money and no food is a crisis few of us are familiar with these days. Yet even in the midst of such an awful crisis, Habakkuk still had a song to sing. It is a song of rejoicing, express-ing the abundant joy of the God of his salvation.

No crisis can remotely threaten the glorious salvation God has provided for us. We look at both money and food as a source of strength – but this joy of the Lord can provide strength that nothing else can bring.

The strength of the Lord gives us feet like “hind’s feet.” That is a kind of deer, but “hind’s feet on high places” certainly has a ring to it. It is the strength of the Lord that enables us to climb out of the valleys of life, so “Be strong in the Lord.”
