Find the #littlethings that work for you.
Little things can make a big difference.
We are pleased to invite you the people of Co Offaly to participate in our annual mental health awareness campaign.
Offaly Mental Health TALK Week, now in its fifth year, is a community driven initiative in collaboration with the HSE and many other agencies, working to promote positive mental health in County Offaly. As a community we have struggled in the past to discuss mental health issues. Whilst the stigma about this subject has lessened, there is more work to be done. Since the initiative started people have openly discussed their mental health issues in the media and contributed to healthy debate and have an increased appreciation that mental health is part of everybody’s life and we all have a responsibility to reach out to those we are concerned about.
It is important that we as a community learn more about mental health and understand its impact in our daily lives. The overall aim of this week is toencourage the community to talk about our mental health, reduce the stigma associated with mental health difficulties and to seek help at a time of crisis. It is also important that we learn how to support a person experiencing mental health difficulties and minimize the risks of poor mental health. We all can become “Suicide Alert “in our communities. There is an excellent variety of topics and speakers in this programme of events that are carefully selected to encourage such awareness throughout this campaign, as we reach out to our communities here in County Offaly.
Our programme this year reflects and is specfic around the ‘Little Things’ national mental health & wellbeing campaign which was launched by the HSE in Oct 2014 and substquity launched by Gerry Raleigh, Director of the National Office of Suicide Prevention, during OMHT Week 2014 making Offaly the first county to imple-ment the campaign. Many of the events of 2015’s programme are themed on the key messages of the ‘Little Things’ campaign as outlined below:
• We all experience challenges and stresses in life; ups and downs are normal – the day to day difficulties that are an ordinary, everyday part of life, like stress, grief, feeling down, worried, being anxious.
• There are evidence-based things that we can do for ourselves and others that will have a positive impact on how we feel and cope.
• We can find out more about #littlethings and about mental wellbeing on www.yourmentalhealth.ie or call the Samaritans on 116 123 for a listening ear and for 24/7 emotional support.
Please visit our website to keep up to date with our campaign at www.omhtw.ie or visit our Facebook Offaly Mental Health Talk Week. OMHTW would like to thank all the organisations that have worked so hard to put the events together again this year. Without their input this week would not happen. I believe we can all learn something from this programme of events so please do take the opportunity to come along some day or evening. We look for-ward to your participation in OMHTW.
