INTRODUCTION Ii
;; I } .
1'his manual is wri tten to furnish a ready reference and complete instructions qqvering the proper procedure for overhauling and making adjustments of all the ~~mponent parts of the 66, 77 and 88 Series tractors. It is intended primarily :l!dr use by the shop mechanic engaged in overhauling and servicing the tractors. it furnishes information sufficient to return the tractors to l ike new condition
l I' i.nd in addition it incorporates the necessary information to keep the tractors in ~roper running condition while being operated in the field.
~nthe discussion of each component part, it is assumed that a complete overhaul ~s being performed and consequently complete instructions for disassembly and reassembly of each unit is given. In cases where complete overhaul is not required, ti,he mechanic must decide how far the disassembly should be carried and the proper ! r
procedure to follow in removing the parts which interfere with the work to be done. i'
\ Where reference data covering specific clearances and dimensions are required in t!he overhaul, such information is included in tabular form in the discussion to provide a quick sight reference. The purpose of this is to enable an experienced ~echanic to find the data readily without reading through the entire discussion.
rlu&. to the similarity of the tractors in the New Fleet, ins'tructions will be given ~.nd illustrations shown for one tra9tor only except where differences occur. These dU'ferences will be pointed out by outlining the procedures for each tractor.
Careful workmanship is extremely important to assure the successful operai:(;ion of ~,he tractor after completion of the overhaulandit),:~ advisable to become thoroughly familiar with each operation and to be sure that each is performed correctly. , . -
~uring the tractor disassembly, we suggest that all nuts, bolts, cap screws and ~mall parts be kept in small containers.p:r;boxes. The containers should be labeled ~!o identify the parts. There shouldl:ieenough containers to provide one 'seqtion or division of the tractor. ,In this way the proper screws, bolts '?1a.nibe reinstalled on the tractor in their correct locations. ~,J
~liOpeqUipment suitable for conducting anoverhaul is an absolute necessity ~~e~ations cannot be successfully performed in the field. For this reason, this \~~al is not intended for distribution to tractor owners.
~efor~ any tractor is delivered, whether it be new or used, it should be given a ihorough check before it is turned over to the customer. For a complete discussion on this subj ect, refer to Section XII.
I • 7he.Oliver Co~~;rdtion reserves the right to change the specificatiqnof, or'i''''im-irolle any of d;s machines or attachments for same, at any time without notice, and lIithout assumption of responsibility in regard to equipment previously sold.

front mounted equipment'. . A:·Gemmer steering' gear is used on Industrial 77 and 88 tractors. The transmission is modified to provide a different arrangement of forward speeds at the shifter lever.
ORCHARD TRACTORS
Like the Industrial tractor the orchard tractor is a modification of the Standard tractor. The wheel guards are extended to prevent low branches and bushes catching and being damaged by the wheels. The seat is lower and farther

Frcim the front main bearing, oil is metered "&o,tl1e timing gears through a small oil tube ,",'-&rYet that spurts a stream of oil on the
gears. (See Figure 2-8.) On the He and KD engines, the front main bearing also supplies
governor mechanism by metering the oil the drilled governor shaft to pro
lubl.~Yion of the governor. F~gure2-9.) Oil:_esel engines, a direct
line from the main oil gallery supplies idler gear shaft and the fuel injection
pump. The suppiy of oil to the governor shaft bore is stopped by plugging the bore.
The oil is constantly circulated through the 'cii 1 filter from the main oil gallery and' is fed back into the crankcase. A non-adjustable oil relief valve located at the forward end of the main oil gallery controls the oil pres-
.' sure by by-passing excess oil back into the crankcase. The oil pressure gauge is connected by a lead to the rear: end of the main oil, gaileryso that an accurate reading of the oil:pressure can be had at all·times.

The water pump shaft runs in a prepacked and sealed ball bearing which requires no further lubrication. The axial-type seal on the pump shaft prevents loss of .eoolant and entrance of air into the cooling system.

9. Use a valve spring compressor and compress the valve springs and remove the valve retainers and valves. (See Figure 2-18.) Place the valves in a. numbered rack so that each valve may be returned to its proper guide. (See Figure 2-19. )
CARBON REMOVAL
All carbon must be removed from the cylinder head before any further work is begun. Carbon may be removed or cleaned from the combustion chambers with solid core wire brushes driven by an electric motor. Scraping with a knife or other metal object is not recommended because of the possible damage that may be caused to the machined surfaces. Also metal scrapers tend to scratch the metal surfaces of the combustion chambers. These scratches will tend to accumulate carbon deposits when the engine is again operated, which in turn will cause preignition and overheating. Correct wire brushes can be procured from automotive supply houses for polishing cylinder heads. Sharpen the wire brushes by holding them in an electric drill with the brushes revolving against a running, grinding wheel.
SECTION II ENGINE
Figure 2-18 Removing Valve
Figure 2-19 Valve Holding Rack
All surfaces in the cylinder head sh::lUld be polished bright and smooth to retard formation of carbon after the engine is returned to operation.
If the valve guides are not being replaced, clean them with a special brush equipped with alOng shank. If the brush does not clean the guides satisfactorily, use a standard 3/8" reamer. A few drops of light oil or kerosene will aid in the cleaning. Check visually with a light under the guide to assure that the inside of the guide is clean, as any carbon remaining in the guides may deflect the pilot used in grinding which will result in misalignment of the seats.
Clean the valves by holding them against a wire brush mounted on a grinder. Exercise
