ctober is finally here!
Hopefully the month has been positively
spooky for you KIWINNER’S! Haunted houses,
crazy costumes, and candy.. what’s not to love
about Halloween? Other than being scared out
of your socks and fiercely debating whether or
not you’re too old to trick-or-treat, of course!
But besides getting toothaches from all the
sweets, I know Jet has been busy with other im-
portant causes! In addition to trick-or-treating
for UNICEF, thank you for finding the time to sup-
port the fight against leukemia with Jet at our
September DCM at Light the Night! I had such a
magical night walking with you manatees!
I wish I could say I’ve done something ex-
citing, but with college applications and stan-
dardized tests.. I’m just fighting off the senioritis!
Good luck to seniors, welcome to freshmen,
and happy Halloween to everyone :) With love,
Halena Ngo

Spotlight on... Your District Secretary Jack Wang!
Official JET Division Newsletter October Issue Page 2
Hello Jet KIWIN'S! If some of you don't know, my
name is Jack Wang and I'm currently serving as
your District Secretary this year! Along with
Halena, I'm part of district board which is com-
posed of 17 individuals and is above the club/
divisional level (you'll see district board at Fall
Rally!) I currently attend Fountain Valley High as
a senior. I started KIWIN'S as an awkward fresh-
man and worked up the ranks to publicist, sec-
retary, and now district secretary. As district sec-
retary, I mentor all secretaries, fill out monthly
report forms, and take meeting minutes for
each district board meeting. In addition, I'm the
committee head for both the Kiwanis Family
and Elections committee. Despite all the work,
I'm so happy that I'm able to serve the district
this year as it was a dream of mine since fresh-
man year. For all of you freshmen, get a
chance to interact with all the members here
and get involved as much as possible. Time flies
by fast and KIWIN'S is an opportunity that you
won't want to miss! KIWIN'S has been consid-
ered my second family and I always have a
smile on my face whenever I volunteer and it's
one of the most rewarding experiences that I
have ever faced. If you have any questions or
want to talk, come up to me; I'm not scary at all
and I like to socialize! Find me on Facebook as
well! (: Can't wait to see all the great thing all of
you will do this year! Remember, you got a
friend in KIWIN'S - to service and beyond!
In service,
Jack Wang
2013-2014 KIWIN'S District Secretary
Fun Facts About Jack Wang
1.) He is a pro Snapchatter.

Board lunches!

Wassup in Jet Division! La Quinta KIWIN’S has been volunteering at the annual NAMI
OC for as long as we can remember thanks to our advisor, Mrs.
LaPera. It’s always a pleasure assisting her at this project be-
cause of the fact that this
event is so close and dear
to her. Members woke up
very early this morning and
drove to the Huntington
Beach pier plaza! From
there, we were assigned
various tasks such as mak-
ing goodie cups with flyers and candies, carrying tables and
chairs to the designated spots, and hanging up different signs
on the canopies. Afterwards members broke down the tables,
canopies, and chairs and carried them back into the vans.
-Jessica Tran, La Quinta KIWIN’S Vice President
After a tedious day of school, Segerstrom KI-WIN’S participated in Segerstrom’s annual Back to School Night on September 25th. Throughout the evening, several club members and officers helped sell chili cheese fries from Wienerschnit-zel to raise money for the club. During the annual fund-raiser, KIWIN’S competed with other clubs such as Key Club, Red Cross, and class councils to gain customers. When parents asked about what KIWIN’S was, mem-bers enthusiastically explained. Even students were encouraged by their parents to join! By the end of the night, all 60 boxes were sold to parents, students, and teachers alike! Overall, it was a success and we look forward to upcoming fundraisers!
-Tony Do, Segerstrom KIWIN’S Vice President
On the night of September 28th, the annual fundraiser walk,
Light the Night was held. The
day was started off with some
fun icebreakers to break the
tension and to welcome the
members to their first event for
some of them. Enjoyable
games, such as Ride that
Pony, Can You Jig, and Hug-a-
Bear were played. As 7pm ap-
proached, the sky grew darker
as the beginning of the 5K walk began to start. Glow sticks were
handed out and members waved them around anticipating the
start of the walk. The walk circled around the stadium and into
the stadium as well. At different parts of the walk, there were
fun music stations to get walkers pumped up as well as an inter-
view section. A member from FV KIWIN’S was asked to be in-
terviewed on why she was there. Members were very pumped
and brought a fun and a delightful atmosphere.
-Angela Nguyen, Fountain Valley KIWIN’S Publicist
On September 7th and 8th,
2013, Edison KIWIN's volun-
teered at the Festival of Children
at the South Coast Plaza Mall in
Costa Mesa. We assisted the
event by aiding and teaching
children of all ages how to make
a "God's eye" out of yarn and
wooden popsicle sticks. Addi-
tionally, on Sunday, September 8th, we worked a shift
of 11 AM to 4 PM and again assisted in arts & crafts
projects for the children, though this time aiding them in
creating a Native American headband/headpiece made
out of card stock, a feather, and foam stickers. Being
able to help the young children was a lot of fun and we
enjoyed in the little art projects ourselves when we
found the time in between helping the children. Helping
the children was particularly enjoyable for us so signing
up to volunteer at children's festivities will be a favorite
that we will see to attend more of in the future.

Wassup in Jet Division! On Sunday, September 29th, Ma-
rina KIWIN’S volunteered in the an-
nual Children's Reading Festival
held at Orange Coast College. Due
to our shift time from 6:00am to
10:00 am, we had a few members
who signed up not show up but that
didn’t stop Marina KIWIN’S from
completing our duties. We were as-
signed to guide the authors and ven-
dors to their specified booths, when
they were at their destined area we helped them unload their
materials from their cars and helped them set-up if they desired
our assistance. Since Key Club members from other schools
were also volunteering at this event it was a great opportunity
for us to bond with our sister club because we got the satisfac-
tion of working with them while also being able to see children
enjoy themselves at the festival.
-Evelyn Romero, Marina KIWIN’S Vice President
To start off a huge day for Segerstrom KIWIN’S, mem-
bers went to Room & Board near South Coast Plaza in
the morning of September 28th to volunteer at the Fasci-
nation of Orchids, a showcase of flowers and orchids
found throughout the world. Volunteers were asked to
monitor event guests as they observe and take pictures
of the orchids showcased at the event. Also, volunteers
offered to help carry any
of the flora bought by
people to their cars. It
was great to see the ap-
preciation of the guests
as KIWIN’S members
carried heavy loads of
the plants. Segerstrom KIWIN’S will be sure to come
back to Fascination of Orchids next year!
-Tony Do, Segerstrom KIWIN’S Vice President
Early morning projects
are a blast among mem-
bers, so it was no ques-
tion that the Race for the
Cure would be an antici-
pated event. La Quinta
KIWIN’S volunteered on
September 22, 2013 at
Fashion Island in Newport Beach. It was certainly a great ex-
perience because it was LQ’s first time volunteering at the Race
for the Cure. La Quinta KIWIN’S was placed at the Pink Cheer
Zone with hundreds of other volunteers cheering ecstatically for
the many walkers supporting breast cancer. The color pink was
everywhere – walkers and supporters donned their pink break
cancer merchandise! Although members had to wake up bright
and early for this event, it was no surprise that they had a splen-
did time, especially for a great cause.
-Jessica Tran, La Quinta KIWIN’S Vice President
On September 29th
2013, Edison KIWIN’s
and Red Cross hosted a
free car wash fundraiser
at the 76 Gas station on
Bushard and Hamilton.
The event lasted from 11
to 3pm. We had cars
coming in constantly and
our members were work-
ing hard to get those
cars sparkling clean! The members of both KIWIN’s and
Red Cross had a blast washing cars together. We
soaked each other and sprayed each other with hoses.
The clubs accepted donations and most of the people
kindly gave us some, raising a lot of money. In total, we
had 8 volunteers and so there was a total of 40 hours.

CLUB PROJECT OF THE MONTH: Marina
Monarch Magic's fifth annual appearance occurred on Septem-
ber 15th, 2013 at Gibbs Park, Huntington Beach. The festivities
celebrated all things butterfly from colorful butterfly-esque face
painting to getting to touch and observe real life butterflies! The
turnout was great with many kids and their parents attending the
event with their friends and family. Marina KIWIN'S and Key Club
were present and helped set up the different booths which
ranged from the bean bag toss to arts and crafts tables as well as
the coordination of these booths, specifically the distribution of
food, drinks, and free items for our guests! songs. The event turned
out to not only be very successful, but it allowed further bonding
between Marina's KIWIN'S and Key club.
MANATEE OF THE MONTH: Ha Le
“These past few months whenI have gotten really
active made me realize how much nice people
are in here.”
Ha has been an active member and has proven to
be a huge contribution to Los Amigos’ KIWIN’S. Ha
has voluntarily designed Facebook covers, and
other necessities for KIWIN’S publicity. During
events, Ha enjoys socializing with other KIWINNERS
from other schools and encourages others to be
themselves. At Club Rush, he helped pass out KI-
WIN’S flyers as well as cheered his heart out to at-
tract students to the KIWIN’S table.
GREAT JOB, HA! :)

So Why Do We Support UNICEF?
By now, many of you have probably seen those little orange boxes filled with
change! In fact, you are probably in possession of one right now, trying to re-
ceive as many donations as possible! For the curious KIWIN’S member,
UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund) is one of our district’s preferred chari-
ties! As a preferred charity, the Kiwanis family provides support to the organi-
zation through raising awareness and donating funds. In turn, UNICEF pro-
vides Kiwanis with various in-kind promotion and access benefits!
