Once upon a time, cruises were perceived as strictly for the elderly and empty nesters – that part of society who could afford such an extravagance.
These days, cruise numbers are soaring in New Zealand with cruise lines offering everything from ‘party’ cruises to expedition-style voyages, and families are boarding activity focussed ships in droves.
More than 56,000 New Zealanders took a cruise holiday last year, according to an International Cruise Council Australasia (ICCA) report. That figure grew by 32 per cent compared with 2010, one of the strongest passenger growth rates in the world behind Australia.
ICCA’s Brett Jardine puts it down to the range of family friendly product on offer.
“The traditional belief that cruising is for the old and wealthy is a total fallacy,” says Jardine. “The average age of cruise passengers has reduced significantly over the past year, primarily because of growth in the family market. When you look at the ships being designed today, there’s a big focus on activities which is really attracting them [families].”
Cruiseabout Ponsonby assistant manager Amanda Elliot says it’s not just the product on offer, but the range of affordability which also draws these new types of clients.
“There is something to suit everyone’s budget,” says Elliot. “Because of the competition and variety that is available, cruising has become one of the most affordable ways to travel. When you calculate the nightly rate and consider all of the inclusions and stopovers, it is fantastic value for money.”
She says families find the all-inclusive option particularly appealing.
“Cruises are continually adding value for money through different options such as all-inclusive rates and having a Kids Club onboard – a huge bonus for parents when they are looking to take their children on holiday with them.”
With the amount of cruise product on offer these days, Elliot says it’s important to investigate what your clients’ expectations are and what is important to them.
“Some people might be best suited to itineraries that have a lot of port stops, so
The cruise industry is enjoying a major boom, and
experts say it’s far from over. With families the biggest
growth market, leisure ships are cruising away from an old era and into the new,
writes Hayley Barnett.

the ship is just a means of travelling from place to place. On the other hand, some clients will want days at sea so they can enjoy the ship and facilities that it has to offer.”
Despite the rise in the family market, Jardine says he expects family cruising hasn’t quite reached the mainstream.
“Families are the main growth market but they still have a long way to go,” he says. “We need to work on awareness of opportunities that are available whereby the kids are well entertained and the parents get a break at the same time.”

cruising out of New Zealand, ICCA has set its sights higher, expecting to see 100,000 Kiwis cruising by 2020.
“Cruising isn’t just a cycle or a fad that’s going to go away in a hurry,” says Jardine. “Having around 100,000 New Zealanders cruising by 2020 is a goal that’s very achievable given the value that cruising delivers as a holiday option. As more people become aware of that we will continue to see growth of the sector.”
To maximise sales he urges agents to become accredited cruise consultants.
“The more knowledgable agents are, the more confidence they will have and that will be reflected in their discussions with potential clients,” he says. “Join the ICCA as a member, take advantage of the educational opportunities that are available with training and promote yourself as a cruise specialist with the endorsement of the industry body to stand behind you giving you credibility.”

As for where they’re are going, Jardine says Europe is the star destination after the Pacific.
“Growth to Europe out of the New Zealand market in the last five years has gone from 3500 passengers to nearly 9000 passengers so Europe particularly is very strong,” he says. “In fact, it has been the largest destination [at 15.3 per cent] when you take out local cruising in the South Pacific which is far and away the largest destination for Kiwis at just over 47 per cent.”
Add river cruising and you have another five per cent on top of that.
“Europe river cruising has certainly grown significantly. If we look back five years, less than 900 Kiwis took a river cruise. In 2011 we’re up to nearly 2700 so significant growth over that period.
“River cruising is a very inclusive product where most of the operators are including shore excursions as part of the overall delivery of the product so it's an upfront price which makes it an appealing option.”
Europe sails ahead

No frill, more chill Clients looking for a small ship experience with a hotel-style environment can look towards Voyages of Discovery.
Voyages of Discovery is offering a Price Promise to all clients, meaning if the standard fare on a cruise reduces prior to departure, the cruise line will refund the difference in the form of an onboard credit or cabin upgrade to any
passengers already booked. This applies to certain seasons.
Offering port intensive itineraries with varied guest speakers and lecturers onboard each journey, the cruises are aimed at immersing clients in a destination.
“There are no casinos or grand evening shows onboard, but rather an elegant and relaxing atmosphere, with refined evening entertainment,” said Cruising Holidays representative Leanne Schou.
Easy upsell Regent Seven Seas Cruises is taking the less is more approach when it comes to cruise holidays.
In addition to complimentary drinks and free hotel stays, Regent also offers unlimited shore excursions in every port of call.
“Agents will find they can easily upsell clients who may be used to large ship cruising in higher grades to experience the all-suite Regent accommodation, and with shore
excursions and drinks included, it often does not result in the client paying a whole lot more by the time they add in these extras, and it’s a hassle free vacation,” said Cruising Holidays representative Leanne Schou.
“Not only is it less expensive, especially on some itineraries such as Alaska where shore excursions can be costly, it gives the clients freedom to choose what they truly want to experience, and not have to be conscious of the expense.”
Voyage into historyVoyages to Antiquity has created a cruise experience for the amateur historian, or rather anyone who simply wants to understand the history, art, myths and architecture of the ancient world.
Some of their big offers this year include 50 per cent off the second traveller, a range of Fly Free to Europe and Asia deals, and a Fly Free Business Class 75-night Singapore to Rome cruise.
Wine is included with dinner and gratuities onboard are also included.

PULL-OUT CRUISING GUIDE
12 Cruisingguide
Following steady cruise growth and the launch of a new cruise terminal in Dubai in 2010, the Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) has signed on as an associate member with the International Cruise Council Australasia.
ICCA general manager Brett Jardine says it is the perfect time for the tourism body to sign up.
“With many of our cruise line members calling at Dubai on their world itineraries and some even
homeporting there, the Dubai cruise industry has seen some exciting growth,” Jardine says.
DTCM executive director of business tourism Hamad bin Mejren says a combination of strong tourism infrastructure, air connectivity and a strategic location at the crossroads of the East and West makes Dubai an attractive destination for many global cruise providers.
“As cruising is the fastest growing segment in Australia and New
Zealand’s travel industry it is important for the Dubai Cruise Terminal to be associated with the Council,” he says. “It provides a platform for us to educate travel consultants and showcase Dubai as a leading cruising destination.”
In 2011, the Dubai Cruise Terminal welcomed 108 cruise ships carrying more than 396,000 passengers, a number expected to reach 400,000 this year and grow to 425,000 passengers in 2013 with 115 ship visits.
DTCM joins Cruise Council
Silversea has added a new Pacific cruise, aboard its luxury flagship Silver Spirit sailing for the first time in February next year.
The 31-day round trip from Los Angeles will sail south across the Equator to French Polynesia to explore the Marquesas Islands.
A maximum of 540 guests will cruise the lagoons of Rangiroa, Tuamotu Archipelago and Moorea, with overnight stays in the lagoons of Papeete and Bora Bora in the Society Islands.
From Tahiti, Silver Spirit sails north through the largest atoll in the Pacific, the Line Islands to Kiribati, formerly known as Christmas Island in British colonial
days when it was part of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands, explored by Captain James Cook. Next stop is Fanning Island on the way to an exploration of the Hawaiian Islands.
Silver Spirit offers all inclusive fares, all suite accommodation, a choice of restaurants and all gratuities.
Silver Savings fares for this 31-day round trip cruise from Los Angeles start from US$15,299 per person double occupancy in a Vista Suite. Silversea includes US$1500 Shipboard Spending Credits per suite for guests to spend onboard.➦ www.silversea.com

Knowledge, experience and personalised service
Quark additionsWorld Journeys has added Quark Expeditions, specialists in Polar expedition-style cruising, to its range of cruising product.
World Journeys director Ange Pirie says they chose to partner with Quark as they offer a blend of expedition-style cruising with creature comforts and a good selection of departures and itineraries.
“Their fleet of vessels represent a good mid- to high-end offering, but essentially, they are all about making sure clients experience the unique wonders of the Arctic and Antarctic,” says Pirie. “Their onboard experts have a real passion for these regions and love sharing their knowledge with guests on land excursions and onboard talks”.
World Journeys has based its February, 2013 Antarctica – The Last Continent small group hosted journey around a Quark cruise aboard the Sea Adventurer.
The itinerary includes two nights in Buenos Aires pre-cruise to enjoy some sightseeing and a tango dinner. Clients then head for Ushuaia and cruise to the Antarctic Peninsula and wildlife rich South Shetland Islands, with another two nights in Buenos Aires at the end for a touch of shopping. Book a deluxe or superior cabin on this departure by 30 September, 2012 and clients save $2000 per person.
The wholesaler is also offering early booking savings on Quark Expeditions Antarctic Explorer cruises in the 2013/14 season. Clients can save 25 per cent on the cruise-only fare aboard ocean diamond suites and balcony suites, aboard Sea Spirit deluxe, premium and owners suites, and aboard Sea Adventurer’s deluxe cabins and suites. All other cabin categories (except triples) attract a 20 per cent saving. Offer applies to new bookings deposited by 30 September, 2012.
World Journeys has reported the Cairo to Luxor section of the Nile has reopened to cruise ships for the first time in 15 years.
Until now, visitors have had to fly or train from Cairo to Luxor, and cruise only between Luxor and Aswan.
“Starting in April 2013, World Journeys is delighted to be able to offer a fascinating cruise along the length of the country,” says World Journeys marketing manager Caroline Clegg. “From 9 to 14 nights, passengers not only see the traditional sights of the pyramids, Cairo Museum and Valley of the Kings but the fascinating archaeological sites of Ashmunein, Tel el Armana, Abydos and Dendara.”
Prices start at $1824 per person share twin for a nine-night itinerary aboard the four-star MS Hamees.
Small ship cruisingWorld Journeys says its range of small ship cruising is expanding year on year, with a small ship cruise experience more often than not included in a land-based touring itinerary.
A recent addition to the range is the Zambezi Queen, offering a small ship safari on the Chobe River which runs between Namibia and Botswana.
“Not only do you enjoy all the comforts of a luxury ship, but you can watch game right from your own balcony,” says Clegg. “Game drives and village visits are also included, as are special touches such as a traditional African boma dinner on the shore of the Chobe River, with African singing and dancing , followed by stargazing.”
Clegg says the wholesaler is experiencing increased demand for small ship experiences in Alaska and Hawaii.
“This is primarily because these are pristine environments which are best explored in a more intimate manner, with smaller guest numbers and more flexibility to go with the flow’.”

The Innovative Travel Company’s GSA cruiseline, CroisiEurope, has named its latest flagship vessel MS Gerard Schmitter in honour of the company’s founder, who died aged 76 earlier this year.
The three-bridge liner has 88 cabins with a capacity of 176 passengers and will sail on the Rhine and its tributaries where Gerard’s dream became a reality 36 years ago.
The new vessel will be operating ‘The Charms of Holland and the magnificent valley of the Romantic Rhine’ which runs over eight days from $1985pp twin – includes all meals, local wine, beer and fruit juice with lunch and dinner, bilingual (French and English), sightseeing and entertainment. Discounts are available when clients book and pay by 18 November 2012.
Meantime, the Innovative Travel Company has launched its 2012/2013 CroisiEurope River and Coastal Cruising brochure, with a new range of cruises for the Mekong River
New Mekong voyagesThe Mekong River itinerary from Angkor to Ho Chi Minh City (or vice versa) includes the temples of Angkor Wat and Ta Prohm; fishing town and port of Kampong Chhnang; the village of Koh Chen; Phnom Penh the capital of Cambodia; ChauDoc, SaDec and Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon).

Sail awayInnovative’s Wisker says there is a growing demand for more boutique, small ship cruising experiences.
“The super yachts in the Aegean and Star Clippers tall ship sailing in the Mediterranean, Asia and the Caribbean are among the popular choices,” she says.
From this year Star Clippers introduced a sailing programme into the Scandinavian region (May to Sept).
“Gaining real traction in the market is our CroisiEurope River and Coastal Cruises, offering more culturally focused cruises and a uniquely French experience with its bilingual French and English speaking cruises and famed French cuisine. A key point of difference with these cruises is the selection of three, four and five-day itinerary fillers, in addition to the 3.5 to four-star standard which has broad appeal.”
CroisiEurope operate 28 vessels with more than 1200 departures on 15 rivers, covering the main European rivers including Spain, Portugal, France and Italy as well as coastal cruises along the Adriatic coastline of Croatia and the Red Sea visiting Egypt and Jordan and the Black Sea region. ➦ www.innovative-travel.com

Thanks to daily flights to and from Lisbon, it’s never been easier to get to Portugal.
Eurolynx Travel manager David Franklin-Ross has just returned from a seven-night river cruise along the Douro River in Portugal, starting and finishing in Porto.
“The scenery was relaxing and diverse with gigantic locks, soaring ravines and wonderful sculptured wine terraces,” says Franklin-Ross. “Porto has to now be one of my favourite cites in Europe, full of visual diversity in both architecture, culture and history. But most importantly, Porto is where all the world famous Port cellars are.”
New ships are being built for 2013 Portugal cruises and will range from four to seven nights and include onshore sightseeing, local cuisine and hospitality.
Beginning in Porto, the ships will continue to the ancient and city of Lamego, then onto Spain to visit Salamanca, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located at the centre of the Castilla y León region. They will then travel inland and onto the countryside
of the Trás-os-Montes region to visit the palace and gardens of Mateus, then explore the 14th-century Alpendurada Monastery before concluding in historic Porto.➦ www.eurolynx.co.nz

Seabourn is adding Antarctica for the first time in 2013. Seabourn Quest, the newest ship in Seabourn’s fleet, will begin a series of four 21- to 24-day voyages sailing between Valparaíso, Chile and Buenos Aires, Argentina starting in November of 2013.
The all-suite ship will cruise the Chilean coast, including visits to Puerto Montt for the Chilean Lakes District, Castro on the huge island of Chiloé, and Puerto Chacabuco for the Rio Simpson Valley and Coyhaique, as well as Punta Arenas, from where guests can tour the Torres del Paine National Park. Then
the ship will thread the glaciers, peaks and channels of the Chilean Fjords, culminating in a transit of the Beagle Channel and its Glacier Alley. Weather permitting, following a call at Ushuaia in Argentina’s Tierra del Fuego, Seabourn Quest will cruise by Cape Horn bound for the Southern Ocean. Guests on board will experience five days in Antarctica, including scenic cruising of highlights such as the Lemaire Channel, Paradise Bay and the Gerlache Strait.
Antarctic expedition staff will give guests the option of available sites for landings and cruising in smaller
inflatable boats, based on real-time weather and wildlife reports. Scientists, naturalists and other lecturers will speak on board and accompany guests ashore to add insights.
During the South Atlantic portion of the voyage, guests will visit Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands, and Montevideo, Uruguay’s capital, en route to or from Buenos Aires.
A 24-day holiday version will include two days exploring the sub-Antarctic wildlife Eden of South Georgia Island.
Seabourn’s new Ultimate Antarctica and Patagonia sailings are open for sale now.
