COOK ISLAND BIRD COUNTAny yachts interested in assis ng?

A local environmental NGO in Rarotonga, Te Ipukarea Society, has some funds to do a seabird survey in the northern Cook Islands. However, they are having trouble fi nding a boat to take them around. There would need to be 2 berths available for the 2 researchers. One of these, Ian Karika, is a very experienced sailor, and President of the Cook Island Voyaging Society, and a driving force behind the double hulled sailing canoes currently on their way from Hawaii to San Francisco, a er depar ng New Zealand about 2 or 3 months ago. The other, Joe, is a biolo-gist working for the Cook Islands Na onal Environment ServiceA possibility may be to join the yacht in Tahi , sail to Penrhyn, then on to Manihiki, Suwarrow, and fi nish in Pukapuka/ Nassau. Or in which ever order the prevailing winds suited best. They could then leave the boat at the next port (Samoa? Tonga?) and fl y back to the Cook Islands. Or the boat could sail to Rarotonga, but I think this would be hard with the wind direc on.The trip should take about 6 weeks all together, and would have to start quite soon so as not to run into the cyclone season. If possible, the yacht should also have a small dinghy that could be used to get to the various islets. If not, local aluminium dinghys at each island would be used for this. Please contact Ana Tiraa on ae [email protected] informa on about the organsia on involved can be found at h p://ipukarea.blogspot.com

Wind Generators - Musket Cove 30 Aug 2011.Musket Cove in Fiji is a great mee ng spot for cruisers from all over the world and a great opportunity to see who's got what aboard. Asked many of the cruisers a number of ques ons about the gear they had and also took visual stock of many other items of gear. This months, the results of the Wind Generator survey. There were 46 boats in the bay on the day of the survey, 31 had wind generators. Of the 31, just 22 were func oning. Of the 22, 7 were Superwind 350 units (5 on ICA Boats) 6 were KISS, 5 Air (Breeze, marine, etc.) and 4 others. Of the non func oning units, 5 were Air units 3 were KISS and 1 other.

Interes ng, 3 boats had dual unit setups two of which were 1 x high output and 1 x six blade unit. This apparently gives a spread of output over a wider wind range.Of the boats with wind generators 27 also had solar panels.

Did you know?..Nau cal Terms• Cat — 1. To prepare an anchor, a er raising it by li ing it with a tackle to the cat head, prior to securing (fi shing) it alongside for sea. (An anchor raised to the cat head is said to be ca ed.) 2. The cat o' nine tails (see below). 3. A cat-rigged boat or catboat.• Catboat — A cat-rigged vessel with a single mast mounted close to the bow, and only one sail, usually on a gaff .• Cat o' nine tails — A short nine-tailed whip kept by the bosun's mate to fl og sailors (and soldiers in the Army). When not in use, the cat was kept in a baize bag, hence the term "cat out of the bag". "Not enough room to swing a cat" also derives from this.• Cathead — A beam extending out from the hull used to support an anchor when raised in order to secure or 'fi sh' it.• CBDR — An acronym meaning constant bearing decreasing range. Because of the implica on of disaster (ships might collide) it has come to mean a problem or an obstacle which is heading your way. O en used in the sense of a warning, as in "watch out for this problem you might not see coming."• Chafi ng — Wear on line or sail caused by constant rubbing against another surface.• Chain-wale or channel — A broad, thick plank that projects horizontally from each of a ship's sides abreast a mast, dis nguished as the fore, main, or mizzen channel accordingly, serving to extend the base for the shrouds, which supports the mast.• Charley Noble — The metal stovepipe chimney from a cook shack on the deck of a ship or from a stove in a galley .• Cheeks - 1. Wooden blocks at the side of a spar. 2. The sides of a block or gun-carriage.• Chock — Hole or ring a ached to the hull to guide a line via that point• Chock-a-block — Rigging blocks that are so ght against one another that they cannot be further ghtened.• Civil Red Ensign — The Bri sh Naval Ensign or Flag of the Bri sh Merchant Navy, a red fl ag with the Union Flag in the upper le corner. Colloquially called the "red duster".• Clean bill of health — A cer fi cate issued by a port indica ng that the ship carries no infec ous diseases. Also called a pra que.• Clean slate — At the helm, the watch keeper would record details of speed, distances, headings, etc. on a slate. At the beginning of a new watch the slate would be wiped clean.• Cleat — A sta onary device used to secure a rope aboard a vessel.• Clew — The lower corners of square sails or the corner of a triangular sail at the end of the boom.• Clew-lines — Used to truss up the clews, the lower corners of square sails.• Close aboard — Near a ship.• Close-hauled — Of a vessel bea ng as close to the wind direc on as possible.• Club hauling The ship drops one of its anchors at high speed to turn abruptly. This was some mes used as a means to get a good fi ring angle on a pursuing vessel. See Kedge• Corinthian — An amateur yachter.

Pacific Circuit Rally 2011

Fiji is a vast cruising ground, one you can spend a life me exploring!

With the fes vi es in Savusavu fresh in our minds we headed off to explore Fiji. With only six weeks we had selected the best spots for the fl eet to visit. First up NE Vanua Levu.

It's only 45 miles from Savusavu to the Somosomo Straight between the main island and Taveuni. To the east Taveuni is like a huge dam, block-ing the trades and crea ng a micro climate behind. To the west is Viani Bay and we stopped here for a few days to take in the sights and do some diving.

Padi list two of the worlds top ten dive sites here, the Rainbow reef and the White Wall. The crews took advantage of the great con-di ons to do several dives while the rest of us snorkelled on some stunning spots.

A quick tour around Taveuni was also on the

agenda along with some fresh water swim-ming and a trip to the market.

Just north is the island of Rabi (pronounced Rambi) and the idyllic Albert Cove, we lin-gered here a day and then took off for the north coast of Vanua Levu.

The north coast of Vanua Levu is "Real Fiji" very li le tourism and you get the feeling you are looking at the locals in a truly natural environment.

Lambasa is a classic, you can walk down the main street and simply blend in. No one hassling you, just one of the locals.

A stop at Palmlea Resort is always a must and Joe and Julie, who run the place and know everything there is to know about the area, have agreed to be our Port Captains for the area. Welcome Aboard guy's.

The fl eet then headed to Kia for some cultural immersion and then on to the Ya-sawa's. Again the weather played ball and

there was some great sailing.

The Yasawas are ge ng towards the tourist hub of Fiji and a true Fiji experience is harder to fi nd. The scenery on the other hand is classic Fiji. Start-ing at Sawa e lau and working south through Blue Lagoon, Somosomo on Navi where many snor-kelled on the world war II plane sunk on the reef. Then onto Manta Ray pass to swim with the Man-ta's, through Waya and fi nally back to Lautoka.

Now it's me to soak up some Musket ambience followed by a li le Musket Madness on the build up to the next leg of the PCR star ng on Saturday 6th Au-gust. The fl eet will clear customs and immigra on at Musket on the Friday ready for a 10am depar-ture for Oyster Island on the East Coast of Espirto Santo in Northern Vanuatu.

Savusavu - Happy Returns!By JandalsSavusavu, on the Western side of Vanua Levu, Fiji, has to be one of the nicest li le ports of entry in the Pacifi c nowadays.

It wasn’t always so... I remember it from years ago when it was a dusty, basic, disinterested =town with not much going for it except the Copra Shed, Skipper’s old army mate Curly,

and a local airfi eld complete with a wrecked Twin O er res ng brazenly beside the tarmac as if daring you to board your own fl ight.

At last, here we are again, rounding the beacon with Q-fl ag bright under the starb’d spreader. As we enter the port and then the town I start remembering bits...the mist rising above the hot water stream where it collides with the sea in the cool morning. The mingled aromas of cooking fi res and vegeta on burnoff . The noisy bustle of the buses and the produce market. And the so but carrying tsssst! sound that Fijians make when they want to catch someone’s a en on. I could swear it’s exactly the same man from years ago, all bu-lawelcometoFiji and wide smiles, waving us to follow his longboat to a mooring; the same elderly lady on her bilibili - which I reckon

Now it's me to soak up some Musket

ambience

means barely buoyant - in the distance, coming back from a night’s fi shing with the grandkids; and the same li le boy in a doorway watching his mum sell freshly cooked corncobs on the footpath. A tailor s ll nudges buckets around the rickety fl oorboards with her foot, while she chats, to catch drips through the leak-ing roof of the oldest shop in town. Some things just shouldn’t change.

But Savusavu has changed other things in the years that have passed since we were there last. Less rubbish, fewer dogs. Evident town beau fi ca on, new ea ng places, more shops and variety of wares.

The town feels diff erent, without losing any of its island- me casualness and charm, it seems more alive and fresh and li ed. Bibi’s LED Elec-tronics are well established now, with a huge reputa on and business awards. The liquor store has fresh bisco and specialty breads twice a week, made by an expat NZer. The friendly Hot Springs Hotel is being refurbished in stages by owners Tim and Lorna, who are also key drivers behind the interna onally successful Savusavu

Youth Sailing Team. A fi rst ever town fes val was held last year.

Locals greet you with a ‘Bula!’ and a smile in passing, shopkeepers are helpful and pa ent. Cafe and restaurant staff remember your name,

even in a group of 20 or so. In our brief me in Savusavu, we felt to be not tourists, nor even visitors, but part of the place and comfortably welcome.

“Savusavu. Yeah. Good spot”, said some typi-cally eloquent Kiwi yach e friends. High praise indeed.

Less rubbish, fewer dogs. Evident town beau fi ca on, new ea ng places,

45 degrees plus, and with no air condi oning, and in such a remote loca on, anyone would go la la!! Any-way the waters were so clean clear and warm. We took the kayak ashore to explore and take photos.

We were now in Oman and with no visa or permit, we anchor out in the harbour to be invited into the Ira-nian Smugglers pontoon, which we did of course! The boys were all very friendly and intrigued with us, just as we were with them. There we were among 46 inch plasma TV’s, the latest stereos, and bundles of stuff all wai ng to make the short trip to Iran. Alec and Brigi e took two jerry cans each and headed off to the petrol sta on which was no more than a couple of hundred metres away. They found themselves inside an en-closed area and were stopped by a local policeman/customs offi cer who asked what they were up to. On explaining their mission was to just fi ll their jerry cans with diesel, he off ered to drive them there and back. So much for the ‘offi cial’ paper work.

We then headed out to fi nd another nice bay for the night. The Oman Navy called us up on the radio and asked the usual ques ons of where we had come from and where we were going. Then they asked for our permit number –well we did not have one so I gave them our registra on number which sounds ‘offi cial’. He thanked me and wished us a good day and we were on our way again.

We dropped the anchor again in an interes ng area – Khawr Kumzar. Kumzar is the most remote and iso-lated village in Oman. There is no land access in or out, only by boat. The Kumzari people speak their own dialect which is a mixture of Arabic and Farsi – the Ira-nian language - with a few other languages thrown in. The town keeps growing so houses are densely packed into the narrow valley and creeping up the sides of the mountains.

To other yach es who wonder about coming to this part of the world. We highly recommend it. It is a very safe place to leave your boat as we did over the sum-mer, and also very a reasonable price . Haitham Kamal – the club’s Execu ve Secretary will take good care of you and he made checking in and out a breeze. Major Ahmed Ibrahim Boloushi – the Managing Director also took a personal interest in our needs and could not do enough for us. There is a very clean shower and toilet block and a wonderful club where meals are fi ve star and very reasonably priced.

Then three days ago we le Fujairah and started back to Oman. We decided to check into Oman at a north-ern Port called Sohar. Well I think this was the fi rst

Some me later they return with our passports all stamped into the country for three months – not the usual one month. Also no money changes hands. Alec next asks if we can now stay the night as it is too dark to nego ate our way through all the fi shing nets outside the Harbour!! It is nearly 11.00p.m. Another phone call is made by the boys and Alec speaks to someone who says yes, and apologies for the delay, and welcomes us into Oman and wished us a safe passage to Salalah – in the south of the country where we will eventu-ally check out.

So under police guard we get a good night’s sleep before con nuing on towards Muscat the next morning. Now this is really for all of you who have been in the area. Next night we anchored among the Islands of A’Swadi – just lovely.

pleasure cra , let alone a yacht, that they had ever seen. No one but big commercial shipping goes into this port, but as Alec had read, it is a customs Port and he was wan ng to avoid the rather long check in we had had in Muscat on our fi rst visit! As we were heading for the harbour a Police Boat came out. We try to explain what we are up to, and next minute one of the boys has jumped on board – Well Hello there!! We are then told to follow the police boat in. Nothing ag-gressive, but all very polite and friendly. We fi nd ourselves in the ‘Police Pound’ as Alec called it. Alec goes off with the boys, once we are ed up to their pontoon, with passports and paper work in hand. He returns an hour later with a number of locals from all the offi cial departments one can think of. We have really confused them. I am asked a number of ques ons and off they go again this me leaving Alec behind.

I beg to diff er because, there is: .....When you marry the right woman, you are "COMPLETE."And when you marry the wrong one, you are "FINISHED!"And when the right one catches you with the wrong one, you are ...
