NWS-Media Relationship

My goal as a broadcast meteorologist:

Provide the most accurate and precise forecast and the most immediate and

detailed severe weather coverage

NWS-Media Relationship

My needs:

Severe Convection verses Winter Storms

Winter Storms

Forecast Discussions: Request that the NWS is very vocal about bias, trends and specific model of choice.

Climate Data: Numerous and up to date snow reports by 4pm and 10pm

Severe Convection

Extended: Next 5 Days

Short Term: Day of event

Real Time: Happening

Post Event: Storm Assessment

Severe Convection

Extended: Next 5 Days

In forecast discussions, help identify convective risk as soon as apparent.

Severe Convection

Short Term: Day of event

In hazardous outlook, break down the specifics of storm risk and storm mode:

•Single verses Multi-cell•Size of hail•Strength of wind•Timing of event

Severe Convection

Real Time: Happening

In NWS Chat, provide as much lead time as possible and share reasoning:•About to issue warning•Why not issue warning•Be specific about radar signatures

Severe Convection

Post Event: Storm Assessment

Can media be directly involved?

This is very helpful to the broadcast meteorologist to correlate radar signature to damage
