Types of allophones and main features of the phoneme

The allophones which do not undergo any distinguishable changes in speech are called principal. door – dawn.

Allophones that occur under influence of the neighboring sounds in different phonetic situations are called subsidiary

bedtime – bad pain –good dog

[d] is pronounced without any plosion

sudden – admit – couldn’t

[d] is pronounced with nasal plosion

The system of English phonemes

are called consonants and vowels.

Consonants are pronounced with noise and voice combined,

In the case of consonants different obstructions are made.

Vowels are pronounced with voice only.

In the case of vowels no obstruction is made.
