What is NPSP?

• The Nonprofit Starter Pack (NPSP) is a series of managed packages that help nonprofit organizations configure their Salesforce instance to better manage their relationships with constituents and their donations.

• The managed packages include: Contacts & Organizations, Households, Relationships, Affiliations, and Recurring Donations

What do you currently have?

• In the setup screen– Click Installed Packages in the Build Section– Look for the Managed Packages

Salesforce Standard Account Model

info@cloud4good.com www.cloud4good.com 855.536.1251

• Each Contact MUST to be related to an Account – In a traditional B2B environment, every contact is

connected to their organization account• What if you don’t operate in a strict B2B environment? • What if you operate in a B2C environment or a mixed B2B

and B2C environment? • How do you handle those contacts?

Pre-NPSP 3.0 Account Models• Individual Bucket Model– Contacts without a direct link to an Organization

are put into the Individual “bucket” account• Reporting is more difficult

• One-to-One Account Model– Contacts without a direct link to an Organization

are put into a “phantom” account with the same name as the Contact• “Phantom” accounts are confusing to users

Those are great, but how do I …?• How do you group contacts together that are

part of the same household?

• How do you summarize their total giving?

• How do you combine them for a single mail appeal to their home?

Pre-NPSP 3.0 Households Object• The Households object was introduced as a way to

group contacts together for purposes of summarizing household giving and de-duplicating mail files– Dependent on settings, each Contact also creates a

record in the Household object– Household Formal and Informal greetings are created– Household records summarize giving levels for all of the

contacts in the same household– Household Mailing list report in Campaigns will select

only one campaign member for each household included in the campaign

Isn’t that all I need?• Household management can be cumbersome and

confusing to users– Household Naming is confusing without additional

configuration

• Data storage can become an issue for larger organizations

• Reporting is more difficult– Misused Opportunity Contact Roles can create incorrect

giving metrics

Should I Change to the Household Account Model?

• Am I using Households today?

• Do I have a lot of customization to my Households?

• Are the 3rd party apps I have Household Account compatible?

• Do I have external integrations dependent on the Account model I’m using today?

• Am I reaching data storage capacity?

info@cloud4good.com www.cloud4good.com 855.536.1251

Change to the Household Account Model

• Prep the Data– Must have Households– All Contacts must have an Account– Individual Opportunities must have Primary Contact

Role– Helpful Reports (Cross Filters will help):• Accounts without Contacts• Households without Contacts• Contacts without Households• Opportunities without Contact Roles• Opportunities with 2x Primary Contact Roles• Total Gifts on Accounts = Total Gifts on Contacts

info@cloud4good.com www.cloud4good.com 855.536.1251

Change to the Household Account Model• Get a Sandbox with data

– Deactivate validation/workflow (including Process Builder and Flows) rules on Accounts & Contacts

– Remove the “required” from fields on Account (not on the page layout level)– Turn off Apps/Integration that will change Account data– Make sure no one is logged in (

https://help.salesforce.com/HTViewSolution?id=000004288&language=en_US)– Make sure Household record type is available to your profile– Select Households as your Account Model– Change record ownership from inactive users to active users– Run the Conversion Utility– Run the Health Check– Re-run the Conversion Utility or Health Check, if necessary– Run the Post-Conversion Steps– Repeat in Production Environment (back up all data first)

info@cloud4good.com www.cloud4good.com 855.536.1251

What Happens to the Data?• All Households become Accounts

• All Contacts associated with those Households become the Contacts in that Account

• The person with the most $$ as a primary contact role will be come the Primary Contact on the Household Account

• An Address Object record will be created for the Household Account with a default as Home

• Contacts that were not 1-1 (ie. Assigned to an Org Account) but were in a Household will have a Primary Affiliation to that Organization Account

• Contacts that were not 1-1 and were not in a Household will stay with that Organization Account
