Words that describe nouns

In Spanish, adjectives usually go AFTER the noun, unlike English where they are before the noun.

Adjectives

Singular PluralMasculine El chico alto Los chicos altos

The tall boy The tall boysFeminine La chica alta Las chicas altas

The tall girl The tall girls

In Spanish, adjectives must match the gender (masculine / feminine), and the number (singular / plural) of the noun it is describing.

Adjectives…Adjectives that end in –e match both genders.

El maestro inteligenteLa maestra inteligente

Many adjectives that end in a consonant match both genders.

El amigo jovenLa amiga joven

Some adjectives that end in a consonant add –a to form the feminine singular.

El chico trabajadorLa chica trabajadora

To make an adjective plural, use the same rule as nouns:

Add –s if it ends in a vowelLas chicas trabajadoras

Add –es if it ends in a consonantLos chicos trabajadores
