B.C.’s Coastal First Nations were quick to endorse a new U.S. study of the value of bear viewing in their traditional territories.
Kitasoo/Xai’xais councillor Doug Neasloss said the study by the Washington D.C.-based Centre for Responsible Travel supports what the northwest coast aboriginal communities have been saying for years: “Bears are worth more alive than they are dead.”
The study calculated that in 2012, bear viewing in what is now popularly known as the Great Bear Rainforest generated 12 times the visitor revenue as bear hunting. It counts 510 people employed in bear viewing companies compared to 12 jobs in guided hunting.
The study is the latest salvo in a battle over trophy hunting in B.C. In November the province proposed to
expand its traditional grizzly hunt to include Cariboo and Kootenay regions that were previously closed due to population concerns.
The Coastal First Nations, which includes Haida, Heiltsuk and seven other North Coast communities, has asserted its unresolved treaty rights in logging and pipeline protests as well as bear hunting. In 2012 the group announced a ban on trophy hunting for bears in its territories.
The province has continued to issue “harvesting” permits,
including one well-publicized trophy shot by NHL player Clayton Stoner in May 2013, who took only the head and paws.
The U.S. study, funded by Tides Canada and Nature Conservancy USA, suggested B.C. has overstated the value of its guide-outfitter business to remote economies.
The province tracks wildlife populations and records human-related deaths, including vehicle accidents and “conflict kills,” where ranchers or conservation officers shoot bears to protect
homes or livestock.The U.S. study
reports that there were 74 grizzly hunters from outside B.C. in 2012, 80 per cent of them from the U.S.
From 1976 to 2009 the province issued hunting permits for an average of 297 grizzly bears a year.

Supplies of influenza vaccine are still available to B.C. residents, despite high demand as the H1N1 strain of the virus has returned, provincial health officials say.
Cases since the current flu season began in December have shown a shift towards people aged 20 to 69, rather than the very young and the elderly who are typically most vulnerable. There have been severe cases
involving healthy, younger people and two deaths have been confirmed, one in the Okanagan and one on Vancouver Island.
The main strain of influenza to emerge this winter is a descendent of the H1N1 that prompted the largest vaccination in Canadian history in 2009-10, when the illness was declared a global pandemic.
Provincial health officer Dr. Perry Kendall said the B.C. health ministry purchased a record 1.4 million doses of the current vaccine, which offers immunity to H1N1 and other strains. Some doctors’ offices and pharmacies have run out as demand has been higher than last year.
“We have supplies currently available, but it’s conceivable that if demand continues to be high, we’ll use up all of those 1.4 million doses,” Kendall said Wednesday. “So I wouldn’t call it a vaccine shortage, I’d call it an unusually high demand.”
The health ministry has a website for information on influenza and other vaccinations, with a guide to finding local flu clinics, at www.immunizebc.ca.
Since 2009, pharmacies as well as doctors’ offices and dedicated flu clinics have been authorized to administer flu shots. They are free of charge to higher risk groups, including pregnant women, very young or old people, people with other medical conditions and those planning to visit a hospital or long-term care facility.
Flu season typically runs from December to April. Kendall said in an average year, between 10 and 20 per cent of B.C.
residents contract the virus, with about 2,000 sick enough to be hospitalized and 500 deaths, mostly people with underlying conditions.
While severe illness among younger, healthier people is unusual, so far the current flu season is in the typical range, Kendall said.
Seasonal influenza is mainly a respiratory illness, with symptoms of coughing, fever, headache and muscle ache that typically last from seven to 10 days. It can be complicated by pneumonia and worsen underlying conditions such as heart disease.
Kendall said confirmation of North America’s first case of H5N1 “bird flu” is not a cause for public concern, because that strain is typically caught from poultry and rarely transmitted from person to person. A traveller returning from China to Edmonton via Vancouver during the Christmas season became ill and died Jan. 3.

I had an opportunity to meet with Rod Hamilton from Courtenay and nd out more about catching bone sh on the y in the warm climates of the world. Rod shes here locally and will spend countless hours on ights travelling to other parts of the world to y sh for bone sh. Bone sh are in the 2 to 5 pound range and the larger sh are caught in Cuba. On the y they hit hard and run and will challenge any y angler. Fishing is done in shallow water and the wind can certainly be a factor. In the New Year Rod will be heading out once again to catch numerous ights to reach his shing destination. In his soon to be released book “Do It Yourself Bone shing”, Rod shares his adventures of bone shing for the enjoyment of anglers who have never tried this type of angling. Harry Macdonald, shing guide from Campbell River, said that at a sports conference in Vancouver all reports are that the upcoming year will have large returns of salmon back into the area. If you though last year was great this year should be much improved and that means shing like it used to be in the late 70’s.
Trout shing can be good off shore at many local lakes and trolling small spoons in lakes like the Upper Campbell and Comox lake can be rewarding. Roberts Lake is a lake that can challenge an angler but catches of pan size trout are seen week after week.

ProcWhether speaking in public or starting a new
job, we all experience anxiety from time to time.Part of the fight or flight response that I wrote
about last column, anxiety is caused by various factors — environmental, chemical, genetic — and is often triggered by stress.
Though more common among women, anxiety and associated disorders can afflict anyone at virtually any age. Wide-ranging symptoms can be emotional and/or physical, including feelings of apprehension and dread as well as irritability, restlessness and fatigue.
Generally, anxiety is considered a disorder when it persists for an extended period of time and it occurs when most people wouldn’t normally experience it. If you’re concerned about anxiety, checking in with a health practitioner will help determine if you’re just drinking too much coffee or whether there is more at play.
A naturopathic doctor will typically begin with a thorough assessment of your diet and overall health to get to the root source, be it depression, low serotonin or GABA levels or lifestyle factors.
Strategies shown to ease anxiety include limiting coffee and sugar, which can play havoc with the body’s norepinephrine and insulin levels; increasing relaxation and exercise time; and eating and sleeping well. Simply taking a few moments to breathe can also be beneficial – ten deep belly breaths at intervals through the day will automatically cause your body to relax and refocus.
In addition to suggesting lifestyle changes and herbal remedies, all naturopathic doctors receive clinical training in counselling, so we may discuss other strategies, such as the use of powerful positive language to boost self-resilience. We can also help assess disorders and suggest further treatment options if necessary.
Anxiety isn’t always a bad thing; it can work to motivate us. But if it’s starting to interfere with your day-to-day life, it may be time to do something about it.
Dr. Erika Kneeland is a Naturopathic physician and owner of Braidwood Naturopathic Clinic in Courtenay. For appointments, call 250-334-0655 or visit www.braidwoodnaturopathic.com.

Strategies for easing anxiety
Tom FletcherBlack Press
The B.C. NDP has compiled its own history of B.C.’s official efforts at racial discrimination, from denying the vote to Chinese and Indian immigrants in 1872 to efforts to restrict Asian immigration in the 1930s.
NDP leader Adrian Dix said the dossier of racist actions by B.C. legislators is intended to accompany an
apology to people of Chinese descent that the provincial government plans to deliver in the legislature this spring.
“I think it’s important that we take this work seriously, and that it not be just a one-day apology, but that it leads to reconciliation,” Dix said at a news conference in Vancouver Wednesday.
The NDP package mostly duplicates material posted by the
B.C. government on a dedicated website, www.embracebc.ca. The NDP records are posted on the official opposition website at www.bcndpcaucus.ca.
Dix said the documents will be used for an educational event with B.C. students in February, to get their suggestions on how the modern provincial government should respond.
Richmond Centre MLA Teresa Wat, minister responsible
for trade and multiculturalism, has organized a series of public consultations to prepare for the formal apology, expected during the spring legislature session.
The first public forum was held in Kamloops in December.
Others are set for Vancouver Jan. 12, Kelowna Jan. 14, Burnaby Jan. 20, Prince George Jan. 22 and Richmond Jan. 28.
Wat said the
consultations will help determine the wording of the apology to the Chinese community, but no further financial compensation is being considered.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper made a formal apology to Chinese Canadians in 2006, and the federal government paid $20,000 each to families of immigrants who paid the “head tax” that was designed to deter Chinese immigration to
Canada.Records gleaned
from the B.C. legislative library include 89 laws, some of which were passed in B.C. but struck down by Ottawa because they strayed into federal jurisdiction over immigration.
Motions and debates up to the 1920s dealt with immigrant numbers and such issues as the number of “Orientals and Hindus” working
in B.C. sawmills.An apology to
residents of Chinese descent was postponed last year after a document from Premier Christy Clark’s staff was leaked, describing a plan to use that and other ethnic appeals to build support for the B.C. Liberal Party.
Clark’s government issued a formal apology for the World War II-era internment of Japanese residents in May 2012.
