In life it takes courage to stand up for what youbelief is right, and even more so in the face ofopposition. As educators we see greatness longbefore others see it in themselves, and wechallenge ourselves daily to instill in students notonly the skills required to reach their greatness butthe courage to do so. It doesn't matter whether it isin relation to teaching, learning, or everyday life. Aquote by Tom Krause says it all, "Courage is thediscovery that you may not win, and trying whenyou know you can lose."

Superintendent's Message Happy Constitution Week! This week marks the 226th birthday of the Constitutionof the United States of America. On September 17,1787, the greatest form of government that has everexisted was signed into being by the founders of thiscountry. It was said that Benjamin Franklin, who was 81 yearsold at the time, had tears streaming down his face as he signed thedocument. He and all the men present realized what an amazing form ofgovernment they had put together. They probably did not realize that we would be here 226 years later stillcelebrating the freedoms that this document ensures. It took a great dealof courage for these men to develop our Constitution. celebrating that event this week. There are many resources availableat http://www.constitutionday.cc. Many of our campuses and classrooms in Nacogdoches ISD are honoring this dayby teaching lessons centered on the Constitution. The Daughters of the AmericanRevolution Nacogdoches chapter on Sept. 10 brought Constitution Week basketsto each campus. Inside the chapter included daily announcements, lesson plansand an invitation to attend the bell ringing event at 3 p.m. on Sept. 17 at the OldUniversity Building. DAR's Constitution Week chair person Susan Singer said there will be two newadditions to this annual event: the presentation of colors by Stephen F. AustinState University's ROTC Color Guard and a live performance of the NationalAnthem by Debbie Tompkins who opens sporting events in Nacogdoches. The DARprovides a great community service with this annual event and we are thankful fortheir dedication. With their help, we can learn a great deal from Constitution as well as theprocess that was followed in the development of the US Constitution. There also is an opportunity to learn major character traits - hard work,teamwork, civility, and courage to name few - all from an "experiment" thathappened 226 years ago.

***On another note, we are thrilled to see the work going on in NISDclassrooms. We are inspired by the enthusiasm of the teachers and studentsin our schools. During a recent visit to Brooks-Quinn-Jones Elementary School's fifth gradeclasses, NISD Assistant Superintendent of Academic Service Dr. SandraStewart witnessed, "Active and engaged learned" where the "activities wererelevant and motivating. Students were excited to be learning." We know this is only one example of the great educational processeshappening everyday in our classrooms that make us all proud to be NISDDragons.

NAC BEATS THE PACK!!!For the first time in 21 years, the Nacogdoches Dragonsvarsity football team defeated the Lufkin Panthers 28-24.
