The book was read to Pre-kindergarten students in the district. Thosehelping the mission included: Kimberly Welsh, who read at Raguet; DeborahWilliams, Emeline Carpenter; Michelle Williams, Thomas J. Rusk; MichaelMartin, Brooks-Quinn-Jones; Dr. Sandra Stewart, Nettie Marshall; andmyself at Fredonia. We kept track as to how many student we read "Otis" and turned inthe information so that we could be counted.

NISD Human Resources director Michael Martin read to 77 students atBrooks-Quinn-Jones for the Read for the Record day on Oct. 3.

While we enjoyed our time reading to students, parents could reap the sameand more benefits and help their child develop by regularly reading to themat home. The University of Michigan Health Systems offers these suggestions formaking reading part of a family's lifestyle:

Turn off the tube - Start by limiting your family's television viewingtime. Teach by example - If you have books, newspapers and magazinesaround your house, and your child sees you reading, then your childwill learn that you value reading. You can't over-estimate the value ofmodeling. Read together - Reading with your child is a great activity. It notonly teaches your child that reading is important to you, but it alsooffers a chance to talk about the book, and often other issues willcome up. Books can really open the lines of communicationbetween parent and child. Hit the library - Try finding library books about current issues orinterests in your family's or child's life, and then reading themtogether. For example, read a book about going to the dentist priorto your child's next dental exam, or get some books about seashorelife after a trip to the coast. If your child is obsessed with dragons, ask your librarian to recommend a good dragon novel for your child.
