SLWS 13th BIG SPLASH EXHIBITION
The Saint Louis Watercolor Society is pleased to announce their annual membership show was very well attended with
80 artists showing 180 paintings at the Saint Peters Community Arts Center from September 11th to October 23rd,
2010. David Coughtry, an Associate Professor at Principia College with an MFA from the State University of New York
at Albany, was our judge this year and had the following statement to our membership on the show:
“You are to be congratulated on such a large and fine group of paintings presented in Big Splash, for which I had the
pleasure of being your juror. I truly enjoyed the many revealing and competent levels of facility with water based
medium displayed on these walls, including very fine examples of painting that is imaginative, personal and inspiring----
to be shared with the community.
Awarding prizes is such an interesting process, and one which need not be shrouded in mystery. It has not so much to do
with “picture making” but really comes down to issues of competency (experience), composition, and craftsmanship
(handling of medium and presentation.) An additional, welcome-element hopefully perceived is the presence of feeling in
an artwork.
In selecting awards for Big Splash it seemed logical that each genre be represented, and so many deserving works I
initially considered commendable remain on the walls unprized. In the end however the words of artist Robert Genn
seem appropriate: art is at its best when the interaction simply takes place between the artist and the work itself----
outside the world of criticism and inside the world of inner knowledge. Each work of art is its own beauty and reward.
Thank you for sharing that.”

Page 3 MICHAEL ANDERSON
ON KEEPING A SKETCH JOURNAL
By Karl Zickler
Michael Anderson provided our group with a
presentation for our September 2010 monthly
meeting. Michael is a member of the Saint Louis
Watercolor Society. Anyone present at the
meeting, but unfamiliar with Michael or his work,
is unfamiliar no longer. Michael is a native of
Oklahoma but states that he feels at home
anywhere since the winds of Oklahoma have
distributed Oklahoma dust throughout the United
States. Michael believes that art is something that
companionship and relationships can be built
around; and that art needs to be shared and those
sharing art need to support and encourage one
another.
Michael‟s presentation subject was „Sketchbooks‟, but given the multi-faceted talent of Mr.
Anderson his „Sketchbook‟ examples took us quickly to 9PM, and for most, wishing that
another 30-45 minutes would have been available. Within his 60-75 minutes Michael
reintroduced us to St. Louis, took us to Florence, Italy, and brought us home again.
Mr. Anderson is a professional artist who creates Illustrations and Paintings, and keeps
sketchbooks to support all of his work. His illustration work combines Architectural
renderings displayed via line drawings, enhancement via watercolors, or digital painting.
Many of his works display St. Louis sites, composed for commercial commission or his own
personal interest. Michael‟s paintings include watercolor, oil and acrylics. Again, all of the
above are supported by the work in his sketchbooks.
Materials used in the completion of his sketchbooks include pencils, pens, watercolors and
Tombo pens. An important feature regarding pens is to be aware of whether the ink being
dispensed is permanent or water soluble. That feature is important to consider if you plan to
add water to the drawing. He also introduced us to water-brushes, a very handy tool to
keep in your sketch kit. The handle of the brush is a clear tube that acts as a reservoir for
water, ready to be squeezed into action when you‟re ready to paint. And who says your
drawing needs to stay on one page of the sketchbook; sometimes the scene just cries out for
more space and Michael responds by continuing the drawing across the crease separating the
pages, and finishes on the adjoining page. You just can‟t place limitations on a great artist.
To view works completed by Michael Anderson please visit his website at
www.michaelandersonstudio.com. Suggestion, pour yourself a fresh cup of coffee before
calling up Michael‟s website. You will want to spend some time allowing your eyes and mind
to wander through the works of Michael Anderson.

MARK MEHAFFEY WORKSHOP
By Shirley Kruse
Participants agreed, this was a very fun,
informative weekend workshop. Our usual bright
and comfortable meeting room at the Maria
Center was filled with some regular workshop
attendees and several that traveled here from out
of town. I hadn‟t signed up to take the workshop,
only attended as the Workshop Chairperson.
What a mistake! Mark was a fun and really terrific
teacher. He had students attention from the
beginning when he gave out a package containing
9 tubes of M. Graham watercolor paint to all the
students! He also gave a detailed booklet to each
student of material he was covering which was
convenient to refer to during his lessons.
Mark is a retired art instructor from the Lansing,
Michigan public schools, but assured us he
considers himself a “local boy” as he lived in
Jefferson City for a time when he was young. He
began the workshop by encouraging us to take the pressure off ourselves to produce a
masterpiece in the workshop. “Try new ideas, experience new techniques and materials and
have your weekend goal be to enjoy the learning process rather than produce a finished
painting.” That was good advice. He encouraged us to “be a risk taker with a brush in your
hand. Be assertive, be aggressive, be Positive!”
Our first assignment Friday morning was to make a detailed sketch from a photo of our
choosing. He encouraged us to simplify the drawing and emphasize the design elements.
Values were all to be determined before painting was started. Students transferred the
drawing onto tracing paper, and then transferred the same image onto 4 small pieces of
watercolor paper.
Next was the 30 minute color lesson. He demonstrated how his 7 favorite colors on his
palette produced many secondary colors and neutrals, and how to use them on your
painting to show off saturated color. Students were challenged to paint the same picture 4
times using a different color scheme each time. The Color Plan options were:
monochromatic, analogous, analogous plus, complementary, all complementary group,
neutralized color, neutrals, and tertiary. These were all explained in his handout. As I
wasn‟t actually painting, but walking around observing, I could see that students were
concentrating and learning what was going on. It was very quiet in the room.
During the workshop, our new Workshop Chairperson, Jim Brauer, arrived with the St Louis
Watercolor Society‟s newly purchased Projector. He took some photos of the group and
then we were treated to a slide show of Mark‟s paintings.
Saturday morning I knew we were in for some fun when he asked me to give each student a
large white trash bag and a very large black trash bag to protect the nice and shiny clean
floors of our Maria Center workroom. The assignment was messy, but a useful learning
experience. Students were to use 2 sheets of Yupo paper and lots of paint and many
different texturing tools to create two paintings, a Non Objective Painting and a
Representational Painting. Interestingly enough, he said not to use the M. Graham brand of
paint for this project, as it doesn‟t work well on Yupo paper. He suggested we choose
either dominate warm or dominate cool colors for our first painting, then squeezed
watercolor tubes of several colors right onto the Yupo, and moved the paint around the
paper with an old wide brush.

SLWS 2011 WORKSHOPS ARE OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED
The Board of the SAINT LOUIS WATERCOLOR SOCIETY is proud to announce the artists
coming to St Louis next year for our 2011 workshops. We think you will agree, we have an
outstanding group of artists coming to St Louis! It is our goal to sponsor workshops that will
offer the participants personal, creative and artistic growth.
Our Spring Workshop, “WATERCOLOR: Secrets and Solutions,” $525
Members, $555 Non-Members, will be led by well known artist and
author Charles Reid. We are extremely fortunate to have him for two
one week sessions, April 11-15 or April 18-22. He will also be the Juror
for our Spring Creative Art Gallery show opening on the weekend be-
tween his workshops. There will only be 18 students in each of his
workshops, so we anticipate this to fill quickly.
Charles Reid is widely known for creating a look of freshness and spontaneity through his use
of “beautiful clean color and his capture of light.” His paintings are loose, direct and expres-
sive. He is the author of numerous watercolor books and lives in Westport, Connecticut.
Please see his website for more details: www.charlesreidart.com.
Donna Zagotta will present her workshop, “Watercolor: Adding the „You‟
Factor to Paintings,” $375 Members, $405 Non-Members, the week of
June 13-17. Please review her work at her website:
www.donnazagotta.com.
Donna‟s paintings have evolved from traditional watercolor techniques and
realism to “an unconventional use of the watercolor medium and the ex-
ploration of the area that lies between realism and abstraction.” Donna
lives in Brighton, Michigan and has been teaching classes and workshops
for twenty years. Her articles have appeared in International Artist Maga-
zine and numerous watercolor magazines. A feature article, “Opaque Color-bold Design,” was
in Watercolor Magazine (Summer 2008).
Fred Graff, will be here the weekend of October 14-16 from Medina
Ohio. His workshop is titled, “WATERCOLOR: Going Beyond the Tra-
ditional Approach.” $230 Members, $260 Non-Members. For more
information, please visit his website: www.fredgraff.com.
Fred is university educated and has a long career teaching art and con-
ducting watercolor workshops, demonstrations and critiques throughout
the United States and abroad. He is among the select watercolorists
who are signature members of all three societies, American Watercolor
Society, National Watercolor Society and Transparent Watercolor Society of America.
All three workshops will be held at the Maria Center in South St Louis. The Maria Center is
located on the campus of Notre Dame High School in Lemay and easy to access by I-255. The
workshops are held in a large, bright, clean room overlooking the Mississippi river, with easy
parking and security. Workshops are filled on a first-come first-served basis. An announcement
and registration forms were mailed in October to members whose dues were paid by October
1. Consequently, many spaces will already be filled. Act now if you want to reserve a spot!
Workshop registration is open to SLWS members only until January 1. At that time, the regis-
tration will be open to non-members.
To sign up for any of these workshops, fill out the application (see insert or download availa-
ble on the SLWS website) and send to SLWS, P. O. Box 158, Fenton, MO 63026, along with
your $50.00 non-refundable deposit required for advance registration, applied to the cost of
the workshop. You will be sent a letter approximately six weeks before the workshop request-
ing final payment. Cancellations after final payment are refundable, less your $50 deposit, if
we can locate a replacement. Members who do not make it in the workshops will be put on a
wait list and given preference over non-members should there be cancellations.

Mark Mehaffey‟s Workshop continued . . .
Mark then demonstrated the fun of how to wipe paint off
in some areas with a wet paper towel, and to add texture
with a whole bag of his “tools” all the while remembering
the design plan. Among his texturing tools were a piece of
carpet pad, plastic needlepoint canvas, masking tape, spray
water bottle, corrugated cardboard, plastic stencils, string,
gravel, well you get the idea. He then turned on the ceiling
fans and waited for paint to dry. When dry, he taught
more techniques to use, the most useful being that a mixture
of Simple Green cleaner and water removes unwanted paint
from Yupo paper or the floor.
For the final step, he combined black gouache with water-
color paint, applied it with a foam roller onto some areas
of the painting, again using his stencils for shapes. The re-
sults on Sunday, the last day of the workshop, were amaz-
ing. I was sorry there wasn‟t time for a critique of all the
work at the end of class.
I asked some students for their thoughts on the workshop.
The results showed that if you have a chance in the future
to attend one of his workshops, take it! Please visit Mark
Mehaffey‟s website: www.mehaffeygallery.com for more
inspiration.
