Husky High School Student Confesses Slaying 2 Women PAWTUCKET, R. I. <UPI) -
A husky, 17 - year - old high school football captain and track star who allegedly admitted hacking two women to death goes to court today.
Thomas R. Knott of 104 Byron Avenue will appear in East Providence Family Court for the slaying of Mrs. Nancy Ann Frenier, 19, of Pawtucket 13 months ago.
Knott, recently elected captain of the Tolman High School football team, confessed Sunday to the knife murders of Mrs. Frenier and Mrs. Edith Martin, 38, of Attleboro, Mass., police said.
Mrs. Martin was brutally stabbed to death in her home Friday.
Authorities said they expected to seek a waiver in the Juve-
knives, police said. She was slain when she returned home for lunch.
Mrs. Frenier, mother of a six-month-old son, disappeared Dec. 22, 1961, while Christmas shopping. Her slashed, half - nude body was found in the East Providence reservoir three months la ter.
Authorities described both slay-ings as the work of a maniac.
Knott told police he saw Mrs. Martin drive past him on Broadway here and followed her to her home across the state line in nearby Attleboro. He said she forgot to take her key out of the door and he used it to follow her inside.
He said he first told the woman he wanted money but went ber-

Police said Knott was neatly dressed but wearing a bloodstained jacket and shoes when they arrested him after he and Ms mother left the Dalton movie theater.
He confessed to the two murders less than half an hour later, police said. They said his mood shifted from calmness to near hys-
store on Newport Avenue in East Providence and followed her to her car.
He allegedly told police he pressed a knife to her back and forced her to drive to an isolated spot near the reservoir where he attacked her, then threw her body through a hole in the ice covering the reservoir.

Karate Expert Cites Value Of Defensive Art BOSTON (UPI J — A karate ex
pert says Mrs. Edith Martin of Attleboro, stabbed to death in her home Friday, could have escaped had she spent one hour learning karate.
George Mattson, master of the Mattson Academy of Karate, made the statement Sunday while teaching 100 Greater Boston women the ancient defensive a r t
Mattson's s t u d e n t s included teen - agers and gray - haired grandmothers all interested in one thing:
"We want to know how to defend ourselves," said Mrs. Helen Hardiman, 35, of Dorchester. Mrs. Hardiman brought her 14-year-old daughter Linda to the class at the Dorchester National Guard Armory.
"I want Linda to know something to do instead of standing frozen with fear," Mrs. Hardiman said.
Mattson, who wears the black belt of a karate expert, showed the women something to do.
Larry Cavicchio, 23, of Arlington watched with pride as his 50-] year - old mother Angela broke! loose from a strangle grip and! whacked her "attacker" across! the throat with a flattened hand.;
"I'm glad she's learned this,"! he said.
So were other husbands and fathers who looked on during the strange session. And so were the women themselves, many of them haunted by fear of Boston's "mad strangler" of recent months.
A nurse said, "I have a long walk to the bus stop when I'm on all - night duty. Now I can walk the streets without fear."
Lt. Gov. Francis X. Bellotti, who; learned judo in the Navy and took up karate last year, demonstrated special karate push - ups at the session.
Afterwards he said, "This is Just a blueprint But if women can be taught just a normal de-j fense reaction they can throw j their attacker off momentarily.
"Most women freeze instead of trying to think. This can be as fatal as it is for someone drowning."
BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (UPI) — Bloomfield Township is a small, wealthy Detroit suburb of expensive modern homes. But its residents live behind drawn curtains.
At night, outside lights are left burning until dawn.
Bloomfield Township is gripped in fear. A sniper who stalks the town by night has attacked three times, firing a 22-caliber gun through windows of the private homes.
Twice he has missed his targets. The third time a mother of five children was shot in the head and fell dead in the kitchen of her home.
Mrs. Mary Godfrey, 38, was shot to death Friday night as she brewed a pot of coffee in the kitchen of her $40,000 split - level home.
Police were without leads. The entire 19-man force was on duty patrolling the snow-covered, dimly lighted streets in seach of the sniper.
They were looking for a teen-aged boy. Police Chief Norman Dehnke said they believed a boy was responsible for the shootings because of the hour they occurred, early evening, and the fact the sniper traveled on foot.
"We believe the killer may be a boy about 14. All three shootings occurred at about the latest
hour when a boy that age would be allowed out," Dehnke said.
Mrs. Godfrey, the wife of a Baptist lay minister, had been watching television with her husband when they decided to have some coffee. She went into the kitchen, which fronted on the street, to prepare it and did not return.
Her husband, Donald, 44, told officers he went to look for her and found her dead on the floor
The first sniping incident occurred at 8:15 Tuesday night, Jan. 15. and the second came 24 hours later. The first shooting was at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hans, only two blocks away from the Godfrey home. They were watching television when a shot cracked the sliding glass door opening onto their back yard.
The next night at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Pittsley the sniper struck again.
The couple's daughter, Nancy, 16, was reading a book in the family room of the house when her dog, Cappie, began barking.
Nancy said she went back inside and closed the drapes^
"Suddenly," she said, nhere were two snapping, cracking sounds, very close together."
She and her mother investigated and found two holes in the plate glass of one of the doors.
