Fake it ’til you make it: Getting started with YouTube

Our YouTube Project

<insert WinkyTrailer here?>

can enhance your blog

• It’s performative.

• It’s multimodal.

• It can help you connect with your audience.

Know your audience & purpose

Audience

• Ask: What do they want from you?

– Step-by-step/how-to?

– New products?

– Something funny?

(Psst: While you’re at it, scope out the competition!)

Purpose

• Ask: What are you trying to accomplish?

– Change beliefs?

– Inspire action?

– Inform?

– Persuade?

– Entertain?

We’ve heard it all before … (because we’ve said it all before!)

“I’m clueless.

You can’t teach

an old dog new

tricks!”

“I don’t have time to

learn something new!”

“I don’t have $$ to buy the equipment!”

“What if

I suck?”

“I’m afraid!”“What if

people laugh

at me?”

Go directly to Stage 5: Acceptance

“Learning Curving” is unavoidable.

The good news?

1) The YouTube community is forgiving. AMATEURS WELCOME.

2) You’re good at producing content. YOU CAN DO THIS, TOO!

“How-To: Fake it ’til you make it!”In THREE easy steps …

Lesson 1

Create a simple production plan

• Don’t skimp on planning.

• Prepare a simple script/storyboard.

It doesn’t have to be a fancy plan…

Lesson 2

Purchase just enough

equipment to get started.

1) Camera with HD/1080p video capability

2) Tripod

1) Lavalier microphone2) Lighting

Filming Tips!

• Use landscape orientation on phones.

• Use a tripod to avoid “Blair Witch” projects.

• Avoid zooming and panning.

Lesson 3

Start with simple editing to get online in a jiffy.

• Use free editing software (MovieMaker or iMovie).

• YouTube has editing capabilities, but they are limiting.

Don’t be so hard on yourself.Learning new things is hard.

• Video editing is non-linear. It will take time to get comfortable.

• Start simple!

• Google/YouTube is your friend when you’re confused!

• Get inspired by watching other vids.

iMovie example

Go from “I suck” to “I am mythical” in no time.
