Opportuni/estochangethismind-setintheearlyyearsoftrainingarelimited.TraineesmayfindthemselvesapplyingforentryintoGPspecialtytrainingjustthreetofourmonthsaFercomple/ngtheirFounda/onYear1(FY1),yettherearefewGPaJachmentsduringFY1thatcanprovideexperienceofprimarycareandposi/velyinformcareerchoice.TohelpamelioratethecurrentcrisisinGPrecruitmentandreten/onini/a/vesarerequiredtoproviderelevantexperienceofGPearlyinmedicalcareerssomoredoctorscanmakeaninformeddecisiontochooseGPasacareer.2

GPTasterSchemeAllFY1doctorshavebeengiventheopportunitytoshadowGPST3traineesworkinginWessexinclinicalprac/ceforuptofivedayssince2015,followingasuccessfulsmallpilotstudyin2014.3ThevoluntaryschemeshowcaseslifeasaGPfromatraineeperspec/veinaddi/ontogainingcommunityclinicalexposure.

In2015&201653FY1doctorsundertookthetasteropportunityforbetweentwoandthreedays.Variabilityindura/ondependedonFounda/onandGPmentoravailability.For201739FY1doctorshavesigneduptothescheme.

Evalua;onandfindingsAFerthetasterallpar/cipantscompletedanelectronicfeedbacksurvey,whichexploredtheirlearning,feedbackontheschemeandanychangeincareerchoice.

Theschemehasbeenposi/velyreceivedbybothFY1sandGPST3mentors.FY1sreportedithadposi/velychangedtheirviewofprimarycare,thatithadchangedtheirclinicalprac/ce,andthattheyhaddevelopedinotherways.ThemajorityofFY1doctorssaidthattheywouldrecommendthetasterscheme,andreportedthattheywereconsideringGPasacareer,with8sta/ngtheircareerinten/onshadbeenchangedbythetasterexperience.FY1sfoundithelpfultohaveatrainee’sperspec/ve,gainanoverviewofwhattoexpect,includingwideropportuni/esavailabletothem.

TheGPST3swereenthusias/caboutGP,whichappearedto‘ruboff’onFY1s.ThemajorityofGPST3respondentsfeltthetasterhelpedthemtodeveloptheireduca/onalskillsandwouldrecommendbeinganear-peermentor.Themajorityalsoexpressedaninterestindevelopinganeduca/onalroleinGPinthefuture.

FY1par/cipantsfrom2015werere-contactedin2016toestablishanylas/ngimpact.Fiverespondents(33%)gaveaddi/onalthoughts,whichpresentedthetasterexperienceasusefulandvaluableinreaffirmingacareerchoiceofGP.

ConclusionsUsingGPST3traineesasnear-peermentorsforFY1doctorsiseduca/onalforbothgroupsandcanhaveaposi/veimpactonGPrecruitment.

ThetasterdemonstratedhowvariedGPis,andchallengedsomenega/vepercep/onsofprimarycare.GPST3sgainedconfidenceintheirknowledgeaboutGPandgreaterinsightintoeduca/onalroles.

AJachmentsatdifferentstagesoftrainingappeartoprovidecontras/nglearningandexposuretothenuancesofGP.Wewillcon/nuetosupporttheGPtasterschemeinfutureyearstoimproveGPrecruitmentthroughgivingFY1sexperienceofprimarycare.
