Why recycle…

1. To use our resources more effectively

2. To save fuel, reduce air pollution, and reduce possibilities of contaminated water supply

3. To save space in the landfilllandfill so we use less land for our waste

So instead of using land for more and more of this…

If more of us used these to recycle correctly, we could reduce how much land we use for waste…..

Approximately 1 billion trees worth of paper are thrown away every year in the U.S.

On the other hand….On the other hand….

• Recycling only 1 aluminum can, saves enough energy to power a TV for 3 hours

Don’t forget Styrofoam!AKA - Polystyrene

Styrofoam is one of the major things to to avoid as much as possible because: avoid as much as possible because: •They use fossil fuels to make it•When burned, it releases toxic fumes into the air we breathe•It takes hundreds of years to decompose in the landfill•Styrofoam recyclingStyrofoam recycling is slowly is slowly expanding in the USexpanding in the US, but at present there is still too much of this material that ends up in our landfills. •It is estimated that 30% of the total estimated that 30% of the total solid waste volume dumped in landfills solid waste volume dumped in landfills is polystyrene

Why do we want to avoid using Styrofoam?

1. It’s easy to recycle

2. It takes 3 months to decompose in the landfill

3. Styrofoam recycling is slowly expanding in the US, but still it is estimated that it makes up 30% of the total solid waste volume dumped in landfills
