MUSIC MAGAZINE: FRONT PAGE PHOTO MANIPULATION

I began to manipulate my chosen image in Photoshop to ensure the image conformed to my research. I aimed to change the image to a black and white image with a colour feature, in this instance the guitar and the small ring around the microphone. To achieve the finished image, I needed to remove the dark shadow on the stage and the black wires which detracted from the model.

I selected the Magic Wand tool in order to highlight the dark shadow and the line on the stage from the lights.

I increased the Intolerance, so that the area the tool would select was increased, and began to select the dark shadow in order to remove the pixels. I had to then decrease the Intolerance as the area selected was too large and began to select part of the model's head and guitar.

I deleted the pixels of the selected area to make it easier for the area to be covered. I did this with all of the black shadow so I could clone the pixels and merge to create a smoky look around the model's feet. I used multiple layers to create the clone to ensure the original was not doctored in anyway to prevent any incidents which could not be undone.

I continued to do this to cover the whole area of the shadow. I had to keep merging the colours with the Healing Tool, which created the smoky look. I then deleted the unwanted layers.

After merging the colours with the Healing Tool, I selected Image, then Adjustments and then brightness to change the image attributes on the copy of the image. This made the image brighter and removed the sheen on the model's face which distracts from the actual image.

I then changed the Levels to make certain aspects darker of the picture, such as the background, which would look better when made black and white.

I then selected the Magic Wand again, with a high Intolerance, to select the guitar to ensure that feature would not be black and white when changed. I the lowered the Intolerance again so that I could ensure all the pixels were selected.

I then created another layer to place the guitar on so this would be positioned over the top of the black and white image.

I then turned the copy black and white and placed the coloured guitar over the top of the image. I repeated this process with the colour of the microphone, red, to add a form of symmetry.

This is my final image which will be used on the front page of my magazine. The image just needs to have the title and magazine features placed in InDesign.
