where moms connectMy Fierce Fashionista
Welcome to the spring fashion issue of Momaha Magazine!Fashion has been on my family members’ minds for quite some time.
My 4-year-old daughter, Alejandra (pictured at right), recently modeled for Ruffled Runway designer Hollie Hanash at Omaha Fashion Week’s spring
show.On the days leading up to the catwalk
event, I was a nervous wreck.Would she finish walking the runway or
freeze on stage? Alejandra had participated in a small runway production months earlier. She knew the drill — sort of.
The Children’s Wear & Bridal Thursday night show at KANEKO was different. It was larger. Dozens of photographers lined the edge of the stage. Spectators filled nearly every seat, and I paced a back aisle damming the minutes for their loitering.
Was she nervous? A little bit. She told me the night before that she had butterflies in her stomach.
I told her it was OK, and that we get nervous because it means we care and want to do well.
I told her she didn’t have to walk in front of all those people — lord knows, I couldn’t — but she shook her head.
“No, I want to,” she said. “I feel like Super Girl when I model walk.” If I only had a teensy bit of her confidence ...Sometimes we’ve got to let them go so they can grow. In my case, my little
fashionista is blossoming into a beautiful young girl and it’s tugging at my heart strings.
In this issue, we’ve included a few snapshots from Omaha Fashion Week; several spring fashion trends; and ways to get your tween away from dressing frumpy. We hope you enjoy the bold patterns and bright hues as you flip through the pages.

Avoiding HandshakesDear Sassy Housewife, I am an elementary school teacher who
is about to celebrate 10 years of teaching. I love the kids, the other teachers and
the staff. However, the one thing that I can’t stand is parent-teacher conferences. This is not because I
don’t like talking with the parents, but because I hate shaking hands. I meet with more than 20 parents in one night, and
I get grossed out thinking about all the germs passed from person to person. How can I be polite and reject their handshakes?
Dear Cooties Catcher,Being a former teacher, I completely relate
to the dread of parent-teacher conferences. However, mine was because I hated telling parents that their son couldn’t stop scratching his private parts in public, or that their daughter could no longer tell me that she had her period every day so she could meet her friends in the bathroom. I never
thought about the hand-shaking aspect of it, but now I suddenly feel a need to Purell my entire body.
With that said, here’s an idea: Keep something in both of your hands at all times. For example, hold a pen in one hand and a file folder in the other. Then when the parents enter the classroom, you can just motion to them to sit down and avoid actually exchanging hand-touching salutations.
If that doesn’t work and they outstretch their hands anyway, perhaps you could simply say, “I have a little cold right now, and I would hate to pass it on to you.” Then I recommend adding a fake sneeze or cough – one with head shaking and a big sigh afterward – to really bring the point home.
If that still doesn’t work and they say it’s OK to shake their hands anyway, I recommend doing it with the most limp, pathetic handshake possible. Once they feel something like that, I guarantee that they won’t want to shake it again.
However, they might also think that you are super weak and wimpy. It’s a toss up with that one. You’ll have to decide which is worse – germs or judgment. I’m going with germs.

Dana Fossella: “I like the fake cough/sneeze.”
Vicki Taylor: “Another thing the teacher can do is have a bottle of hand sanitizer on her desk and after shaking each hand, use the sanitizer. Either the parent will get the message or the teacher will just have sanitized hands. Either way, it’s a win. If I were the teacher, I’d already have a big bottle on my desk since kids pass along germs as well.”
Jon Gilsdorf: “Wait a second! The columnist hated telling parents that their daughter ‘has her period every day to meet her friends in the bathroom ...’ Then two paragraphs later, the columnist advises the teacher to lie about being sick? WOW!”
Kacie Beachler: “I agree. Lying probably isn’t the best way to go ... Couldn’t she just tell parents the truth? ‘I’m sorry. I’d love to shake your hand, but with all the illnesses going around, I don’t want to risk (passing on the germs).’ Honesty is the best way to go. What parent would be mad about that!?”

If a picture is worth a thousand words, Omaha photographer Tiffani Jedlicka’s images speak volumes. At first glance, a
photograph that she took of a blissful mother holding her 1-week-old baby may seem like just another print in Jedlicka’s award-winning portfolio.
However, this is not an ordinary photograph. The image is actually a photo snapped during Jedlicka’s first newborn photo session after her son, Reid Edward, was born without a heartbeat August 18, 2012.
Heartache and grief changed the Jedlicka family after the loss of their stillborn son. This was not part of the fairy tale life that Jedlicka, 29, had envisioned when she met her husband, Scott, in June 2007.
Fourteen months after meeting, the couple wed and planned their lives — down to the names of their future children. Those plans quickly changed when their first pregnancy brought them twins. Although the couple had planned to have two children two years apart, Trent and Blair were welcome detours.
That’s about the time when Jedlicka fell in love … with her camera. Every new mom loves to snap pictures of her baby (or babies
in Jedlicka’s case). But her candid snapshots soon turned into portrait requests from family members and friends.
Jedlicka eventually traded her career in human resources for a Nikon camera and a future as a work-at-home mom. Senior portraits, newborns and families – Jedlicka booked them all, but hadn’t yet found her niche.
Then her life plan took another twist. After a 10-week pregnancy that ended in miscarriage, she conceived again. This time, baby No. 3 was due three days before the twins’ birthday.
At 36 weeks, Reid Edward was delivered stillborn due to a knot in his umbilical cord. Jedlicka spent hours holding baby Reid. And just like with the births of Trent and Blair, photos were taken.
Reid’s portrait (at left), shows what appears to be a sleeping infant. Not so fortunate, the Jedlicka family had to say goodbye.
Weeks later, Jedlicka needed to get back to work, but she wondered how she would handle newborn photo sessions. “I was nervous,” Jedlicka said. “But photography gave me something to be passionate about

and space to escape the overwhelming sense of loss.”
Uneasy yet hopeful, she decided to give it a shot ... and the pictures tell it all. Eight months and 25 newborn sessions later, Jedlicka is still snapping portraits. And she has found her niche: newborn photography. Every time Jedlicka photographs a newborn, she is documenting a miracle, she said.
“Reid’s death was just an accident – a horrible and tragic event that will always be heavy on my heart and deep in my soul,” she said. But Reid’s death taught her that all children, especially her own children, are miracles. “My passion is photographing happy mothers holding their beautiful healthy babies tightly in their arms,” Jedlicka said, “[and] my passion is growing as fast as my hope.”
Despite the family’s tragic loss, the images of Jedlicka’s future are becoming clear once again. A photo of Trent and Blair playing with a Tigger toy purchased for Reid shows that their little brother will never be forgotten. Snapshots of the addition on their home show that there is room in their hearts and home for more children. Pictures of 25 happy moms with their little miracles prove
that there is so much meaning behind a still image. And Jedlicka is ready to tell it with every click of her camera’s shutter.
About the author: Jen Schneider is married with a daughter and stepson. She is a full-time middle school teacher who maintains a personal blog titled, “Liv, Laugh, Love.” This story first appeared there.

departure from last august’s showing of “over-the-top”
dresses with lace-up corsets and full skirts.
Sookram’s collection also took a notable turn from
previous seasons. “I was less timid this time around,”
said the mother of three. “this is a better picture of
what I do with bright colors.’’ especially delightful: Mini
cocktail dresses with silver metallic bodices, peter pan
collars and full crinoline skirts in bold hues.

Wardrobe WarsTween fashion sense usually needs a nudge in right direction
By Amy GrAcemomaha.com fashion blogger
When it comes to what kids wear, many parents have an opinion about what is appropriate. Whether
it’s age-appropriate, weather-appropriate or just occasion-appropriate, dressing tweens can be a chore.
If you want your tween to dress less frumpy, set some ground rules. Or maybe “guidelines” is a better term, as we know that anyone over the age of 2 hates the word “rules.”
My advice is to start young. However, if your child has already entered the tween stage and you just now have an issue with what she is wearing, convey your expectations in a rational conversation. Don’t do it during a fight about what she already has on for the day.
Let her know why you think it’s important that she wear clothing that isn’t baggy, ripped or dirty. I tell my kids that it shows their teachers and other adults respect when they dress nicely for school or a special event like a birthday party. If they understand why you have the rule, they will be more apt to respect it.
In return, let your tween wear what she wants on the weekends.
Choose items from your child’s closet together, and give her examples of outfits that you think are appropriate. Individual style is important to almost everyone, and tweens are no exception. Try to be somewhat flexible with the items you both choose to put in the “acceptable” pile. You want your child to be able to express her
own style, but within your guidelines.Items like ripped jeans – or
“deconstructed” jeans – float in and out of popularity, and will probably be around for the foreseeable future. While they may not be your favorite option, try to have an open mind. Help your tween choose stylish options to go with the jeans so they are less offensive to your own sensibilities.
For girls, add crew neck sweaters layered over bright T-shirts in feminine colors to the “acceptable” pile. Adding simple patent or sequined ballet flats will make ripped jeans look instantly better (by taking the attention away from them, most likely).
For boys, button-down shirts or simple polo shirts can instantly tone down the “frump factor” when it comes to ripped jeans. So can boots. Both of my kids have a casual pair of suede ankle boots that they can wear with jeans, cargos, cords and even dress pants. They have rubber soles so the kids can still shoot hoops or ride their
skateboards, but they look a little nicer than tennis shoes.
If your tween has a closet full of oversized T-shirts that you can’t stand, adding a few key pieces and some accessories can help. This means that the kids can keep their frumpy shirts, but you will feel better about how they look leaving the house.
Encourage girls to use hair accessories or jewelry to express their style, while toning down less desirable clothing. Adding a fitted jean jacket to virtually anything in a girl’s wardrobe makes an outfit instantly stylish and pulled together.
For concert T-shirts or shirts with “potty humor” emblazoned across the front, layer on-trend flannel or quilted nylon jackets. Add sneakers – free of holes and filth – to pull together a stylish and less frumpy outfit.
If all else fails, wait until your kids are at school and donate all the worst offenders. They’ll be forced into wearing only the good stuff!

For girls: Fitted leggings and sneakers will balance out oversized pieces that your child may not want to part with. For boys: Pair T-shirts with skinny or straight-leg jeans. Darker colors are dressier and are the most popular right now.

1/4 cup Spanish extra-virgin olive oil, divided5 to 6 potatoes, peeled, thinly sliced1 yellow onion, finely diced 8 large eggs1 cup Spanish olives, pitted, chopped3/4 cup roasted red peppers, thinly slicedChopped parsley to taste1/2 teaspoon sea salt
1. In medium non-stick skillet, place 2 tablespoons olive oil in cold pan and add potato slices. Turn heat up to medium-high. Sauté, covered, until potatoes are soft but not crispy – approximately 15 minutes. 2. Add 1 tablespoon olive oil in a second sauté pan over medium heat. Add onions and cook until soft and translucent for 5 to 7 minutes. 3. Once potatoes and onions are golden and cooked through, set aside to cool. 4. In large mixing bowl, crack eggs and whisk well. Gently stir in cooled potatoes and onions. Add in chopped olives, roasted red peppers and chopped parsley. Season with sea salt. 5. Heat two tablespoons olive oil in a non-stick sauté pan over medium heat. In hot pan, add potato and egg mixture. Reduce heat and cook until rim of eggs and center of tortilla are cooked through. 6. Place large plate over top of sauté pan and flip tortilla. If needed, you can place tortilla back into the pan, cooked side up, and cook through until yellow side is golden brown. Slice into pie pieces and serve warm.
1 bunch asparagus, woody ends trimmedCooking spray 2 large eggsDrizzle of olive oil (optional)Optional:Parmesan cheese1 teaspoon bread crumbs1/4 cup chopped red peppers
1. Fill medium saucepan with water and bring to a boil. Submerge asparagus and cook for approximately 2 minutes, maintaining a bright green color and slight crunch. Immediately remove asparagus and shock it in a bowl of ice water. Reserve. 2. Coat medium-sized skillet with cooking spray. Crack two eggs into pan and cook over medium heat until the whites set and the edges of the eggs are cooked. 3. Place asparagus on plate, making an even layer. Remove eggs from the pan using a slotted spatula and place on top of asparagus. Top with a drizzle of olive oil and garnish with Parmesan cheese, bread crumbs and/or red peppers, if desired. Variation: Serve on two pieces of whole wheat toast.

get organized
1. Gather all of your shoes into one space, no matter if you have 10 pairs or 100 pairs.
2. Divide your shoes into categories, such as everyday, boots, flip-flops, heels, etc.
3. Sort each category of shoes into “keep” and “donate” piles.
Shoes: 5 Steps to Taming Closet ClutterBy Amy TokoS
Smart Storage optionS
4. Divide your “keep” pile into a “love” pile and “others” pile. Evaluate the “others” pile. Why do you want to hold onto them? Sometimes it is because they are cute or they were expensive. You now must decide if they are worthy of space in your closet. Remember, no matter how long you keep a pair of pricey shoes, your money will not return to your wallet.
5. Put away the keepers. Here are a few options for storing your shoes. Evaluate your space and decide what will work best for you.
- Floor shoe racks work well for everyday shoe storage if you have the floor space. But invest in a well-made rack; a flimsy rack won’t stand up to everyday use.
- Shoe boxes offer an easy way to store infrequently worn shoes. You can put the original shoe box on your shelf. If you don’t like that look, purchase matching shoe boxes and attach a picture of each shoe to the outside of the box. A caution: The shoe box system does not work for everyday shoes because you will end up with a lot of empty boxes on your shelf and a floor full of shoes.
- A fabric hanging shoe cubby is a good solution if you don’t have a lot of shoes and you have rod space in your closet. The nice thing about these shoe cubbies is that your shoes are very visible.
- Hanging shoe bags work well for thin shoes like slides or flip-flops – if you have sturdy doors that these bags can hide behind.
- Under-bed storage is great for off-season shoes. It frees up closet space and keeps extra shoes out of the way.
