Real-time Fax over IP with MultiVOIP
Mitel 3300 ICPpartner application brief MultiVOIP
The Mitel 3300 Integrated Communications Platform (ICP) provides enterprise IP-PBX
capability plus a range of embedded applications to corporate local and wide area
networks. Its seamless IP networking allows for full feature transparency within distrib-
uted environments. Readily scalable, the 3300 ICP can serve the needs of users in small,
medium and large enterprises with multiple locations.
Multi-Techs MultiVOIP Voice/Fax over IP gateway allows for the integration of fax onto
Mitels IP communications infrastructure. The MultiVOIP gateway connects a traditional
fax machine to an IP network and utilizes the T.38 protocol to provide real-time faxing
over a distributed IP environment. By integrating fax onto a single in-house IP network,
MultiVOIP can signicantly reduce toll charges when faxing between inter-ofce loca-
tions.
Faxing has traditionally been done in real-time over the Public Switched Telephone
Network (PSTN) via the T.30 fax protocol and several modem standards. The traditional
faxing method provides some real-time features that have become an essential part
of the fax experience and continue to set expectations with Fax over IP. These features
include the real-time receipt of a fax, an immediate notication that a fax has been suc-
cessfully sent, and notication to the receiver of the senders phone number and the time
that the fax was received. With MultiVOIP and the T.38 protocol, these real-time features
are now a part of a users Fax over IP experience.
MultiVOIP is a point-to-point solution (one is required at each location) that merges
voice/fax from traditional phone/fax equipment, onto the IP network. The send-
ing fax machine sends a fax using traditional modem modulation to transport
the T.30 protocol and image data to the MultiVOIP. This information is then
encapsulated and transported across the packet network using the T.38
protocol. At the receiving end, another MultiVOIP gateway separates the fax
from the IP network and sends it to the receiving fax machine.
MultiVOIP allows companies to cost-effectively turn their fax machines into
IP devices to provide complete inter-ofce communication within a distributed
network environment. This solution allows a business to completely eliminate
their recurring long distance charges (when faxing other locations) because their
faxes ride for free over their data network.
