WEEK 11: Roman Numbers
FACTS/TIPS:
The present number system that we use is called the Hindu Arabic
Numeral. Roman Numerals is another number system that we use
where letters represent numerals.
PRACTICE EXAMPLE:
The Romans used their fingers to form their number system. This is
what it looks like.
As time went by the iiii was changed.
Whenever a smaller Roman numeral comes before a larger Roman
Numeral the values are subtracted.
So iiii is now iv
iv = one less than five
OR
5 – 1 = 4
No Roman numeral can be used more than three times.
V is never repeated.
ON YOUR OWN:
Write the Roman Numeral for the Hindu Arabic Numerals below.

FACT/TIP:
Whenever a smaller Roman Numeral comes after a larger Roman
Numeral the values are added.
PRACTICE EXAMPLES:
Let’s look at this Roman Numeral.

WEEK 11: LENGTHS OF NON-STANDARD UNIT
Name: __________________________________________ Date: _________________________
FACT/TIP:
Length is described as the distance from one point to another. Non-
standard units are units that are not normally used for measurement.
Each would have its measurement.
PRACTICE EXAMPLE:
Some non-standard units that we can use to measure length are a
book, pencil, hand span, foot, and paper – clip.
Look at the length of this object.
Length length
Walk along the edge of a room in your home. How many feet length
is the edge of the room?
Your foot should be placed like this.
ON YOUR OWN:
Draw arrows to show where on the shape we can measure the
length.
Use your handspan to measure the end of a table in your home.
HOMEWORK:
1. Which of these is not a non-standard unit of measurement?
(a) handspan
(b) foot
(c) ruler
(d) tape measure
(e) stride
(f) crayon
2. Measure the long side of a textbook using a clothes peg.
---------------- clothes pegs long
3. Write five examples of things or places that you can measure
the length of e.g. The edge of your yard

WEEK 11: LENGTHS OF NON-STANDARD UNIT
LESSON 2
Name: __________________________________________ Date: _________________________
FACT/TIP:
The standard units of length are the common units used to measure
length.
Some standard units of length are millimeter (mm), centimeter (cm),
meter (m), and kilometer (km).
PRACTICE EXAMPLE:
The units in order of size are:
Smallest to largest
mm cm m km
We use the smaller units to measure the shorter lengths and the
larger units to measure the longer lengths.
So, we could use mm to measure or finger.
ON YOUR OWN:
What units would you use to measure the following items?
(a) Road -
(b) Pencil –
(c) Table –
(d) Book -
Answer: road (km), pencil (mm/cm), table (cm/m), book
(cm)
HOMEWORK:
1. Arrange these units from largest to smallest.
cm mm km m

2. Write two items each that you can measure with the
measurements below.
(a) mm

3. Why would you use a kilometer to measure the distance from
your home to your school?

WEEK 11: ESTIMATING THE LENGTH
Name: __________________________________________ Date: _________________________
FACTS/TIPS:
To estimate means to make a guess.
To get the exact length we have to measure.
To measure we use a ruler (for shorter lengths) or a meter stick (for
longer length).
The ruler, measuring tape, and meter stick are all called measuring
tools or instruments.
PRACTICE EXAMPLE:
Look at this ruler.
The unit on the ruler is cm.
If we measure 2 cm, we start from zero.
Zero to one = 1 cm
One to two = 1 cm
If we start at 1 then our 2 cm would stop at 3 because there are two
spaces between 1 and 3.
Look at the long edge of your exercise book.
Find the cm measurement on your ruler.
Guess or estimate the length of the long side of your exercise book in
cm.
Now measure the long side of the book with your ruler.
Put the answers in the table below.
Object Estimate Actual Measurement
The long side of the
exercise book
ON YOUR OWN:
Estimate the length of the objects below, in cm, then measure them with your
ruler.
Object Estimate Actual
Measurement
HOMEWORK:
1. Use the mm side of your ruler.
Draw lines with the measurements below.
(a) 5 mm
(b) 10 mm
(c) 8 mm
2. Use the ruler to write the measurement of each strip.
(a)
______ cm
(b)
_______ cm
(c)

WEEK 11:
Name: __________________________________________ Date: _________________________
FACTS/TIPS:
When solving written statements or problems in Mathematics, we
should read the statements carefully and look for keywords or terms
before solving them.
PRACTICE EXAMPLE:
Read this statement carefully.
Jane has two pieces of string. One piece is 12 cm long and the other
is 12 m long. Which piece of string is longer?
Step 1 – Read the statement.
Step 2 – Look for keywords.
Step 3 – Write short statements.
Step 4 – Solve.
Solution
One piece is 12 cm. The other piece is 12 m.
They have the same number but the units are different.
Since the larger unit is m, the longer piece is 12 m.
Answer: 12 m
ON YOUR OWN:
Read the statement carefully, then solve it.
Mrs. Singh wants to purchase some cloth to make curtains. What unit
of length would she most likely purchase at the store?
Keywords: cloth for curtain, unit of length
Statement:
Answer: meters
HOMEWORK
Read these statements carefully before solving them.
(1) A Grade 3 teacher was taking her class on a walk around
the community. What measuring tool could she use to
measure the length of the journey?
(2) John has an assignment to measure from one end of his
street to another.
(a) What is he measuring?
(b) What unit of measurement would he use?
(c) What instrument would he use?
(3) Sarah was measuring the length of some items in her home
using millimeters. List 5 items she may have measured?

WEEK 11: LENGTHS OF NON-STANDARD UNIT
Name: __________________________________________ Date: _________________________
Remember: Non -standard units are not normally used but standard
units are mainly used.
1. Write T for true or F for false.
(a) Length is how long or from one point to another. ______
(b) Non-standard and standard units can be used to measure
length. _____
(c) Some examples of non-standard units of length are hand–
span, chalkboard eraser, and a straw. _____
(d) Kilometer and meter are used to measure short lengths.
2. Draw arrows from the smallest to the largest units.
3. Complete the table below using a unit of your choice.
Object Estimate Measured Length
A pencil
2 litre drink bottle
A spoon
4. Answer the questions using this statement.
Mother was sharing candy. One piece was 6 cm and the other
was 6 mm.
a) If you were offered a piece of candy, which piece would you
want?
