WHAT SHOULD YOU KNOW?

• The 1968 Summer Olympics, officially known asthe Games of the XIX Olympiad were held in MexicoCity from October 12 to October 27.

• These were the first Olympic Games to be stagedin Latin America, the first to be staged in a Spanish-speaking country, and the first to be staged ina developing country. They were also the thirdOlympics to be held in autumn.

• The Mexican Student Movement of 1968 happenedconcurrently.

From August 23 to October 12 the torchrelay recreated the route takenby Christopher Columbus to the NewWorld, travelling from Greece throughItaly and Spain to El Salvador and then onto Mexico.

Enriqueta Basilio lit the Olympic Cauldronwith the Olympic flame

Pablo Garrido read the Olympic Oath inthese Olympic Games.

The games were officially opened by thePresident Gustavo Díaz Ordaz.

HIGHLIGHTS

Enriqueta Basilio became the firstwoman to light the Olympiccauldron with the Olympic flame.

Dick Fosbury of the UnitedStates won the gold medalin the high jump using hisunconventional jumpingtechnique, which laterwould be given his name.

HIGHLIGHTS

Bob Beamon, with his 8.90 m in the longjump, set an incredible 55 cm improvementover the previous world record. It stood asthe world record for 23 years, until it gotbroken in 1991.

The introduction of doping tests resultedin the first disqualification in the historyof the Olympics. The Swedish pentathleteHans-Gunnar Liljenwall wasdisqualified, as he drank several beers justbefore competing.

In addition, this Olympicgames seem to be the firstOlympics to be transmitted incolor to the whole world

For the first time, East and WestGermany competed as separate teams.Beethoven's Ode to Joy was playedwhen East and West Germany arrivedin the stadium.

There were 112 nations participating

5,530 athletes took part in these Olympics(4,750 men and 780 women)

There were 172 events in 20 sports

Athletes broke 22 world records. It’simportant to highlight that Jim Hinesachieved an unthinkable mark in the 100mevent (9.95s)

These Olympics took place at the“Estadio Olímpico Universitario”.

These were the first Olympics to use asynthetic all-weather surface for trackand field events; the "Tartan".

THE EMBLEM

The Olympic rings inspired the "geometricdesign“ of Mexico 1968 emblem. It is acombination of the five rings over the yearof the games. The design came from thecollaboration of three artists. It recalls thepatterns of the Huichole Indians.
