Aim of Year 1
Smooth transition from ReceptionRotational activitiesBuild children's independencePrepare for whole class teaching
Reading
Children will read to an adult in school on their given day.
Some children will have additional reading with an adult and peer reading with year six children.
Children read during guided reading sessions and during phonic lessons.
Children have access to class library books which they can take home and share with you.
Guided Reading:- Takes place daily after lunch and consists of five
rotational activities.- Some books may be recapped- Mixture of fiction and non-fiction- Verbal comprehension questions asked, then written
later in the year.- Emphasis on understanding the book, not just
fluency. Story world books will be sent home to consolidate
understanding.
Phonics
Important part of child's learning as it helps them to read and spell.
Children will be assessed and grouped across the year, to improve their phonetic ability.
Phonics five days a week. Homework will continue in the same format as last year.
Summer term children undertake a National Phonic Screening Assessment where they will read real and nonsense words. (More information will be given to you in the workshop on the 7th and 8th October).
Spellings/Homework
Spelling will be sent home on a Thursday
PLEASE PRACTISE FREQUENTLY, but in a fun way!
For example children can look for them in newspapers or
magazines and cut them out to make a collage.
Encourage children to look for them in their reading book or
story books that you share at night.
Maths Important to be integrated into real life scenarios
e.g. shopping, shape spotting, counting paving slabs when walking…
Mathletics - New and exciting scheme for our school. Children will have their own log in and be able to access games and challenges at home. They will need to complete a set task before choosing what they would like to play supporting having fun whilst learning.
Homework will be games and challenges, but we will still send mental math’s practice for those who like to record on paper a 2 minute challenge.
Science
Children have a broad range of science topics taught throughout the year: Ourselves, plants, materials, light sources and the seasons.
Learn through practical investigations and talking about external practical experiences.
