TEKS: 4.6A/5.6CThe student knows that some change occurs in cycles. The student is expected to: describe and compare life cycles of
plants and animals.
Materials

Terrarium with mealworms in difference life stages,Life Cycle chart, colors, paper, hands Lens, several containers to place stages of mealworm. List of animals that go through the metamorphosis process. Mealworm, butterfly, frog.
Teacher orders mealworms from Marcille Hollingsworth. www.enchantedlearning.com to label theCycles and take a quiz. There is also a quiz on www.brainpop.com on lifecycles. Kingdom Animalia (animals), Phylum Arthropoda (arthropods),
Class Insecta (insects), Order Coleoptera (beetles),
Family Tenebrionidae, Genus Tenebrio,
Species T. molitor.
Classification:
PLC 23
The mealworm is NOT a worm. It is the larval stage (grub) of the yellow mealworm beetle,
also called the darkling beetle (Tenebrio molitor).
Although the grub looks a bit like a worm, the mealworm has six small, jointed legs. Both the
larva and the beetle are nocturnal (active at night), but they are also active during the day.
Mealworm
PLC 23
Both the adults and the larvae are scavengers that eat grains (hence the name mealworm) and some
seedlings. Because of this,
It is considered a pest. They also eat decaying material, like decomposing animals and dead
plants. They get all the water they need from the food they eat. Mealworms are eaten by many
animals, including many birds, rodents, spiders, lizards, and some other beetles.

Life Cycle
PLC 23
The mealworm undergoes complete metamorphosisPLC 23
EggsThe tiny, white, bean-shaped eggs are about 2 mm long by .9
mm wide. The female darkling beetle lays hundreds of tiny, white, oval eggs, which hatch into tiny mealworms (the larval stage) - it
takes from 4 to 19 days to hatch.
Anatomy
PLC 23
Larvae Are dark yellow with brown bands; they are up to about 35 mm long, have a segmented body, six legs (towards the front of the
body) and two antennae. Each mealworm eats a tremendous amount and grows a lot, molting (shedding its exoskeleton) many times as it grows
Anatomy
PLC 23
The pupa Is white/cream with a large head and a pointed tail (it
darkens as it grows). Like all insects, It then enters the pupal stage (this stage lasts from 2-3 weeks
up to 9 months, if the pupal stage over-winters). The pupa does not eat and seems inactive, but it is transforming itself
into an adult
Anatomy
PLC 23
AdultThis beetle has a hard exoskeleton, six jointed legs, two
antennae, compound eyes, and a body divided into three parts (the head, thorax, and abdomen). The adult is from 12
to 25 mm long and is dark brown.
After pupating, a white adult darkwing beetle emerges from the pupa -- it soon turns brown and then almost black. The
adult lives for a few months

Life span Mealworm
PLC 23
The entire life cycle takes about a year.

Educational Objective: CLEAR: SCI.5.2.06/SCI.4.2.06 TEKS: 4.6A/5.6C
Teacher Background: Teacher will be familiarized with Life Cycle & Pattern of Changes in animals and insects. Use cards form bin given to us by REMSL. Match cards with lifecycle. Have students elaborate on each lifecycle. Draw & illustrate.
Engage: Show the students a Muppets show where a litter butterfly are taking with a caterpillar that become in other animal during the conversation Use a convertible Muppet that is in one side a caterpillar and in other side a butterfly. Explore: Kids will observed each stage of the mealworm life cycle groups of four, using hand lens and sticks to touch and move the mealworm. The students will view www.UnitedStreaming.com. watch the lifecycles.

Explain: Students will place each stage of life cycle in individual container. Draw, label, and explain process egg, larva, pupa and adult. Make cards using powerpoint as guide.
Evaluate: Give a student an empty cycle chart and ask students to write and explain each stage.Taks Connection.
Elaborate: Powerpoint presentation Modifications: Verbal explanation of each stage. Act out each stage.
